The villager trade center was functional, but ugly. I had to rectify this. So I got to work designing the shell. I got inspired by the Etihad Towers in Dubai, but I wanted to do something bold with the colors. I ended up going with a Joker/Mardi Gras theme. Really, I wanted green because it represents emeralds, and purple goes well with green. So does orange and yellow, but I don't like those colors much.

I got my grind on, chopping down spruce trees, smelting a desert worth of glass (well, not really, but a good chunk of a desert) and got everything crafted up and into one place. I was so pumped to build this thing that I skipped the platform initially and just went for the shell. I started with a wire frame of polished andecite to get the shape right (of course I practiced in creative mode for this one) and then filled in all of the glass.

Admittedly, this is a flattering shot. Other angles reveal out "fat" the build looks. From the front it looks cool, but because of the oval shape, which is required to house the villager trading center, it looks disproportionate. But as you can see, once the cliffs are in place surrounding it, that won't be so noticeable. What bothered me more, however, is that with the entire build being glass, you could easily see the structure I was trying to hide.

I decided to proceed with building the platform. This platform (and all platforms) is similar to the platform that supports the Sanctuary Observation Tower, except that it's an oval shape rather than a circle out of necessity. After adding the pathway around the building, some trees, bushes and flowers, I went on to filling in the floors. I figured this would help more than anything, because as you look up at the tower, your view of the inner structure will be obscured by the flooring. Once all of that was done, I thought it turned out quite nice!

Even with the trade center being visible through the glass, the flooring made a huge difference, as did everything around the buliding. I think I'm going to refer to it as the World Trade Center.

    Entry #14

It was another beautiful day in Sanctuary as I stood at the base of the Observation Tower, looking across the way at the newly finished World Trade Center. I always enjoy standing back and appreciating how much a new build adds to the area. There was just one problem... Every time I wanted to get there I had to burn through my ender pearl supply, or swim. My ender pearl supply was getting low, so I'd been doing the latter, and my body was feeling it.

So it was time to design the next major piece of Sanctuary... the roads. I wanted a futuristic road design, held up by pillars emerging from the lake. I also wanted the road to be able to bend and curve like the one I saw BlockWorks create for the Disney's Tomorrowland map. It ended up being a much bigger challenge than I anticipated.

I started with a circle around the Sanctuary Observation Tower. The platform of the tower is situated on the lowest level of the lake, so the road had to dip down to meet the ramp that connected the platform to the road. Getting that curve right, or at least to something I could live with, took several hours of trial and error. It was exhausting!

(Major spoilers in the background of these screen shots. Sorry about that!)

Once the turnabout around the Tower was complete, I set about building the pathway to the WTC. This was considerably easier. Rather than a straight light, I went for a road that was centered on the Observation Tower, then curved to center on the WTC. The road had to curve up slightly toward the end to get up to the next level of the lake and meet up with the new platform, but it turned out quite nice.

Eventually I want to place end rods along both sides of the entire road. I think it really gives it that futuristic look I'm going for, in addition to looking cool at night. But those things are expensive for a guy with no blaze for end block farms! Some friends recommended that I change out the bone blocks in the middle layer for something with more color. The bone block has grown on me, but I may yet do that as well.

Finally, no more swimming to do my trading! But I'm definitely not looking forward to building more of these roads...

    Entry #9

The lake is only part of the custom terrain project for Sanctuary. There is also going to be a tall cliff that wraps around the entire lake, except for where the water exits. But after the lake project, I've been afraid to start landscaping again. It took so much out of me. And yet, the cliff project was calling me, as if to say, "Do you have what it takes?" I think I do. But this time we're going to have to tackle it in smaller chunks, rather than doing it all in one go.

So I picked an area close to where the villager trading center is located and started building up with stone. For the most part I followed the Fibonacci Sequence. I worked my way in and I went up, then eventually started working my way back out to create an overhang, then capped it off with dirt. The initial shape looked like this:

It seemed like a good start, but of course it didn't look natural at all. So I set up some epic scaffolding that wrapped all the way around the cliffs, then set to the task of rounding everything out, trying to take care not to round it off in the same way twice in a row.

The cliff was looking much improved after that, so next I went through and added leaf blocks for moss. Because moss isn't very thick, I considered just replacing stone with leaf blocks, but ultimately I didn't like that effect. So I went with a combination. Most leaf blocks are placed on top of and next to the stone, but here and there I knocked out some stone and replaced it with leaves as well. This also meant going behind the cliff wall and placing stone behind the leafs. I used four types of leaf blocks as well to give it some texture. Overall I think it turned out pretty well, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. The idea was to just do it on the top side, where the stone get partial sun exposure, rather than the bottom where it would get more. I imagine Sanctuary is a warmer climate and that the moss would only grow with partial sun exposure. Would it look better running all the way down?

The final step for this stage was to place the water falls. I experimented numerous times trying to give the waterfalls some interesting shape. The one on the left has some shape on that top only, but it's better than nothing. The right side was much easier because it comes off at an angle. I took care to add shape at the bottom as well, where they would impact the water. Later on I'd like to add cob webs around there to give the impression of mist.

And it's still not done! I need to go through and detail it out. Like the lake bed walls I plan to use cobble stone, andecite, diorite (and that brownish one?) to break up the stone. Additionally I need to cap off a lot of those exposed blocks with cobblestone slabs and stairs. Doing this will not only decrease mob spawning on the cliffs, but also it can be used to smooth out the curves and shape to give it a more natural look. I debated whether or not to do this step, or just finish the basic cliff (which is what I consider this to be) all the way around Sanctuary. I'm just going to wait. I'd rather get the rest of the cliff walls up faster. Having that piece of a cliff kills my immersion, and it will stay that way until at least the basic cliff is done.

This by itself was about a 10-12 hour project! Next time I'll have to do a smaller chunk just for my sanity. But I think for my first ever attempt at something like this, it turned out pretty nice! I'm not stoked with every bit of it, but I'm taking those areas as lessons learned for next time.

Thanks so much for reading! I hope you enjoyed it. May you be happy and well! =^)

Forgive me if you said somewhere, resource pack Faithful 64x?

I don't think I did. The resource pack is Vattic's Faithful, but mixed with a few others. There's another version of Faithful I'm using for the updated inventory screen, for example. The sky comes from Halcyon Days and requires Forge or OptiFine to run. You have to delete everything except for the sky, sun and moon files so that you just get the environment stuff. There is a good tutorial for that on YouTube. I can't remember the creator but you'll find it right away if you type "BDoubleO Beautiful Sky" into the search. Hope that helps! =^)

    Entry #8

I completely tore down the slime block elevator that was over 100 blocks tall, and went with a completely different design. Still no luck. That's probably the down side of running the map on a server. But at this point I was getting anxious to start the next big build, a skyscraper that would house the Villager Breeder and Trading Center!

I made a temporary platform on the far east side of the lake and decided it best to complete the interior and technical side before building the exterior shell. I used a Villager Sorting system designed by my good friend Mott Bot (he has a great tutorial on YouTube). It uses minecart rails and is so easy, elegant and effective, it was hard to pass up. Water streams can be bulky and slower. I designed the first floor to start, but quickly chose to have at least two floors worth of villagers. My end goal is to have every possible enchanted book trade in the game. In retrospect, I wish I would've made three floors. As it is, I'll have to get a few villagers with multiple good (or at least acceptable) book trades. The first floor back wall houses several columns of double chests that have been sorted for items you can trade with. In the future, those items will be sent there from other farms or from the chest room automatically. Once that happens I'll go back and label the chests. Here is a view of the first floor:

The design for the second floor was similar, except the back wall of chests is instead used for additional villagers. There are six on each wall with a total of 28 slots. Not quite enough for all of the villagers I wanted, but it should still work out pretty well I imagine. Plus, I figure I can always trade out villagers for better ones if I'm willing to do a little leg work. Which I am. =^)

I installed a simple minecart elevator at the entrance, neatly hidden away, to get between floors. Of course I would need a villager breeder to populate the trading center, so I got to work. I decided on a new design by Unarybit, who is the man when it comes to villager related technical projects. He has a showcase and world download on YouTube. Look for "Unarybit 1.9 Villager Breeder". I made the villager breeding cell and transportation system accessible on the third floor. I didn't screen shot it, but the 4th floor gives you access to the breeding cell (to feed the villagers) and the 5th floor gives you access to the artificial village. Here is the third floor:

Not visible in this shot is that the rail splits two ways. A level on the left wall allows you to switch the track to send them either into the trading center, while the other option sends them to the nether portal. I've found transporting villagers through the nether to be a very easy way to move them around, especially when you need to transport them vertically as well as horizontally. This way I can easily get villagers into place for the future wheat/carrot/potato/beet root farm, as well as a future iron farm. Once those projects are done, most of the additional villagers will be used to populate Sanctuary. But we're a long ways off from that point.

It seems like a pretty great system to me, but I feel like it's missing something... Perhaps if I pray to Notch he will give me the answers, but you just never know. He's so inconsistent.

My apologies for not taking better progress screen shots in this one. I had actually made this and these were potential thumbnail pics for the video, and I'd made it all before the original post on this thread. I'll try to do better on the next one. In fact, the next entry should be really interesting if things go well this next week. =^)

In the mean time, do you think it's grand enough? If you could change it, what would you do to make it better?

Thanks so much for reading! May you be happy and well! =^)
