Bump, I think this could use more attention.

On a side note, governments do routinely and openly "scam" by printing money to cover expenses, with no legal repercussion. (After all, they -are- the law)

Where can I read more about this?

I tested the "Written Books As Currency" theory on that server and I must say that despite being a small scale test, it went well.

It's more of a system rather than a theory, just saying.

posted a message on binaural sound mod
I'm actually thinking about helping out with research involving binaural hearing at my university ( http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~rms/BinauralWeb/ ), so maybe I'll make this mod myself. Hopefully, the mod API will get released sometime within the next year, so I don't have to work with buggy workarounds when I get around to learning how to mod Minecraft.

Luis, you can always just play on a different server. Pretty and peaceful towns are not the point of this simulation. We are not getting an anti-grief plugin.

Also the server http://www.minecraft...-minecraft-132/ Pandemonium 2 seems to follow this paradigm somewhat, I'll go try it out.

One of the main things that seperate the servers is that in P2 you can't trust other players and noone is settling down. This is because the server is always running, so there isn't a way to protect your assets 100% of the time, which encourages moving around a lot.

What you think separates this server from the rest is actually what makes it the same as the rest: It's a typical hardcore deathban PVP server. This encourages anarchy over any form of political or economic organization.

I'm going to emphasis this: Expect people to drop out. Anyone who claims they are interested will eventually drop out if this experiment isn't fun and engaging for them (not saying you should purposefully make it fun and engaging to the point of advertising and making events).
"We would like to see what identifiers exist that determine core human behaviors"
I'm a bit iffy about the term "core human behaviors." Maybe you should add the constraint of how we are playing a sandbox game, because the very reason we are playing this game already implies a "core human behavior."

Also, a bit irrelevant, but is anyone in your group from CMU? I'm currently an undergrad there.

Just warning you that everyone involved, both players and observers alike, either have short attention spans or have other commitments. Basically, expect lots of people to drop out if you actually get this going. It's very difficult to start something on the internet that will maintain traction.
Also, you'd have to have a large sample size (eg lots of experiments, lots of people) to get useful data. Otherwise, you mind as well use the "data" to tell a unique story. Part of science is reproducibility of results.
But first, tell us what your goal is. In one sentence.

Are wars a possibility? Once you die, you're permabanned from the server? Just like real life. That would also come with an obvious problem. Everyone would just kill each other right at the start. So invincibility is around for 5 hours.

Also, there would be no real governments, just 50 or so groups gangs of 2 or 3 people, because everyone wants to be their own leader.

Another problem, this isn't what MInecraft is about. It's about creativity and stuff, not governments. I'm sure there're some games out there that are all about government and crap, but definitely not Minecraft.

    No permaban

There are actually very few people willing to be leaders, by empirical evidence of closed map servers and my own experience.

What gives you the right to say what Minecraft is and is not?

    Quote from Koaten

I don't believe you understand the experiment fully. There are no rules with-in the walls. The only rules are not to leave. The goal is to survive off of the land, whether it be working together, forming a society, organizing armies, or simply griefing.

This isn't a "go cut some trees and make a beautiful house, only to rage-quit when it's greifed" server. It's an experiment to witness how players survive when they cannot excape the others and are forced to share the world with them.

But, yes, you have a point. A 24/7 server would have flaws, such as other players not being there to defend themselves and would cause and imbalance in the game. However, I don't see a way around this, as there is no way to have everybody join in at the same times.

    Got any ideas?

    Well, let me reword that:
Other than lots of griefing, nothing interesting will happen, and people will most likely quit.

Every other closed map experiment is flawed due to how everyone is never on at the same time, and how people will quit after the first session.
The best thing to do is to gather people IN REAL LIFE to do the experiment.

"The server will be on 24/7"
Sorry, this isn't gonna work. Lots of maps on /r/limitedservers were 24/7 and were griefed to hell before anything interesting happened.

I never said nerf it. just give trusted people control over it. Give some people an inch and they take a mile. I personally would love to trust every player that joins the server but its never a 100% thing.

Do you want to make a server with a peaceful and loving community or do you want a political an economic simulator? As long as the players don't cheat, let them do as they wish. Trust is an optional feature.

Honestly, TNT is not that "destructive and fatal". I think it would be better to leave it alone for now.

In simplest terms, one group is denied all but the most essential block placing/mining privilages, and the other is denied pretty much any access to anything involving a GUI.

Whether or not it will encourage cooperation, it's still definitely an interesting alternative gameplay. You should make another thread about this idea.
