posted a message on How to use a gamepad with minecraft
I personally grew up with gamepads, not mice as we always have had laptops. So naturally id find a way.

WARNING: This assumes you have an adapter already, if you don't then go get one! You can find on in the troubleshooting guide. This guide is specifically for the DualShock 2 controller made for the PS2, but can be adapter for other pads aswell!

    Windows
First you need to download something called xpadder since minecraft doesn't support gamepads natively you can find it here at http://dev.majorgeeks.com/index.php?ct=files&action=download&" target=""MajorGeeks it's an older version, but will work fine save the xpadder zip for later.
Next you can download my pre-configured xpadder layout I did for a PS2 DualShock controller just for minecraft that can be found over at MediaFire again save it till next step.
Go to C:\ and extract everything to a folder called xpadder (even xpadder itself!)
Then you'll want to right click on the xpadder.exe application file>>properties>>compatibility. Under compatibility mode check the check box, select Windows XP (Service Pack 3), and also check "Run this program as an administrator" click OK.
Open Xpadder with your gamepad plugged in, it'll ask you where to save files select program location. Now click the paper button on the left side by the dropdown box >>Open>>[All..] and go to C:\ select the paper version of minecraft. Now click the little gamepad icon on the right by the dropdown box >> open >> go to C:\ and open the file called minecraft you'll get something like "Twin joystick controller added!".
Now since there are different adapters/gamepads ect you'll want to change it to yours click the little gamepad on the right icon and then click the control panel button.. change it to yours and it should recognize.
Go ahead and test it out! Open minecraft and here are the controls for the layout I made:
    • R1 - Attack/Destroy
    • R2 - Toogle next quickbar item
    • L1 - Use item
    • L2 - Previous quickbar item
    • Analog stick 1 - WASD
    • Analog stick 1 press - Toogle view 3rd/2nd/1st person
    • Analog stick 2 - Mouse/look movement
    • Analog stick 2 press - Toogle press for moving inventory etc
    • X - Jump
    • Circle - Drop held item
    • Square - Sneak
    • Triangle - Inventory
    • Start button - Escape
    • Select button - Enter
    • DPAD up - Show player list in multiplayer
    • DPAD down - Talk
    • DPAD left - Pause/release cursor
    • DPAD right - Screenshot

    Linux - Ubuntu
    Writing it up right now!

    Troubleshooting/FAQ

    Q: It's doing weird things!
A: Make sure minecraft's controls are set to default, and if its not doing anything your gamepad may not work with your computer. It's hard for me to troubleshoot this things as I don't make the programs only a layout.
Q: I don't like something in the layout/want to switch something around.
A: Go ahead! It's free to change and if you change something post it here if it's critical or considered helpful I'll implant it into the default one.
Q: I don't have a PS2 Dualshock controller, what if I have an xbox controller or a real gamepad?
A: The layout won't work for you, so you'll have to make your own (I can help you through teamviewer if wanted and it can be put on the main thread) it's easy to do just time consuming.
Q: What adapter do you use for the PS2 controller to get on the pc?
A: I used this one http://amzn.com/B000PS1TG6, it's cheap and effective.
Q: I find the sensitivity of the mouse too high/low, how do I fix this?
A Windows:: In windows click the wrench on the left analog stick in xpadder and click mouse settings, check the check box "Move together" and adjust the slider to desired levels.
    B Linux:In linux coming soon
Q: The deadzone is too high/low for me, how do I fix those?
A: Windows: In windows click the wrench on the analog stick you wish to adjust, click settings and adjust the deadzone there.
    B Linux: N/A
