I haven't posted any images in a long time simply because updates were progressing so slowly. Now that danaphanous is back and working on the map, I figured I should probably post a few more for the next update. On a side note, every future custom area for future release has been physically built but not detailed with entities. This may take quite a while to finish, but I'll release images for those updates as we get through them. Anyway, here are the images for the next update!
Today’s update is going to be short. As danaphanous mentioned, I will not be around. As there are only 3 people on our build team, this will slow down this update considerably. However, we did create something in the last week! I will just leave this picture here…
I’ve been making some progress on the next update! As it covers new lore, the new work will be pictures with little-to-no explanation. Any lore in this update will be a surprise!
On that note, if you really want to know what is in the next update, and you are willing to work for it (possibly work on making the lore itself!) you can join the build team. To join, follow the guidelines I detailed in a previous post. The guidelines are quoted below.
If “you would like to help with this project, quickly explain what building tools you have experience with (vanilla commands, WorldEdit, MCEdit, Worldpainter, or something else), what you like about the map (or hate! If you want to change something, we’ll seriously consider it), and how much you are able to work on the map. (Note: if you are on our build team for at least one major update, you will be added to the “wall of fame” in the map)”
Have not had much time to work on the map this week, so instead I’ve spent time taking pictures to update the current post! Not all screenshots are included because some were simply better than what I could get in a short timespan. Main post will be updated soon.
If you have a screenshot (or many!) feel free to submit it (or them)! Not all of mine are the best they could be and as I am not actually playing this map in survival mode I am very limited.
This week’s update is a bit different than usual. If you’ve watched this thread for a while, you probably noticed that the “Ocean Asteroid” is taking a rather long time to complete. Although I’ve mentioned that future updates will take significantly less time to build, this is misleading, as it does not include setting up planned story, planning the actual builds, or testing each new area. As we are very close to releasing one of our largest updates, we have decided that our small team of active builders (me! sometimes danaphanous or our tester Lezandria if they have time) is not enough to finish this map at the speed or with the quality we hope for.
Assuming you read all that (and we really hope you did!), and you would like to help with this project, quickly explain what building tools you have experience with (vanilla commands, WorldEdit, MCEdit, Worldpainter, or something else), what you like about the map (or hate! If you want to change something, we’ll seriously consider it), and how much you are able to work on the map. (Note: if you are on our build team for at least one major update, you will be added to the “wall of fame” in the map)
Additionally, I’ve constructed an image album with all the screenshots I’ve released here. The new icy asteroids show one example of the terraforming we currently do. You can visit the album here: Build Work
A weekly update is here! Danaphanous is hard at work bringing additions to the map, but he was able to design a few creatures for the ocean asteroid! In addition, I’ve finished up basic terraforming for the next update! This includes icy asteroid and caves, which require detailing still. As with every week, some screenshots exist in the spoiler below!
Floating Fire! It's a block of fire, and drops what you would expect from a fiery jellyfish.
A new variety of sea urchin!
Bubbling slime vents! The bubbles don't drop anything, but they look cool.
Icy asteroids have a unique crystalline structure that makes them form certain shapes!
Time for another weekly update! I’m please to say that, with the exception of loot and creature additions, the ocean area is finalized. However, you won’t see it in an update until the creatures and loot are added, hopefully this or next week. I’ve started work on the next update too, which includes an icy asteroid chain. As usual, there’s some screenshots!
The depths of the ocean stretch to the distant walls of the asteroid.
A small cavern in the asteroid.
A small icy asteroid! More coming next week...
Additionally, you can view the images here: Ocean and Ice Asteroid Update
Here's the plan: build updates every Friday! This means you get an idea of what I'm working on every week. New posts will be fairly short. This week, work on 1.8.0 continues, in the form of biome detailing! Work is ongoing, but several undersea biomes have been created. Hopefully this will help with the aesthetic of the area and add locations for loot! Like last time, I’m posting pictures because otherwise I could be sleeping and making stuff up… Not that I would!
I’m Compsogbrickus! I’ve worked on Space Expedition for quite a while now as the main map builder, but I haven’t introduced myself properly here. In this post, I’ll talk about my current work, which will hopefully explain why it takes so long to make major updates!
So the new area, as Danaphanous has mentioned, is a massive ocean-themed addition to Space Expedition. It’s almost as large as the central asteroid cluster! However, I’ve spent weeks terraforming and building this area, making it vastly different than earlier areas. If you weren’t aware, early areas used vanilla commands and some MCEdit work for terraforming, but since I’ve joined the build team we’ve moved progressively towards mostly WorldEdit and some MCEdit as well as a few other tools such as WorldPainter to create terrain and structures. Despite 1.8.0 seeming to take forever to release, it’s technically being built many times faster than early areas. That explained, time for some screenshots! Yes, I can prove I’m working and not just sleeping!
An abandoned lab lies below the waves...
The undersea lab extends into a different kind of sea...
Many custom biomes exist in this area! At a 20-chunk render distance, most of this land vanishes into the distant fog.

Strangely, both crash reports have 'try our sister game, Minceraft!' in the header, although that's not important.
I just finished reading this thread, and I have to say... well, my first death was certainly not like the ones I read. First of all, the death message read: "Compsogrickus was blown up by skeleton." Yep, blown up... by a skeleton. What happened was that I fell into a ravine, a skeleton started shooting me, and then a creeper fell on top of me, leaving me with half a heart, and then the skeleton shot me. I learned to be very careful around caves and ravines after that.
How did I fall in? Well, I wasn't watching where I was headed. This happened about a week after I bought the game, and I had iron armor, so that's the only reason I didn't die from the point-blank creeper blast.
