I'm Rownan's real life friend and I've watched him actually work on this theory. It's actually a real post.
Although I do disagree with this strip-mining tactic, you must first have the obsidian and TnT, where-as if mining, you need only a little amount of resources.
I'm sure I'm like the sixth or seventh person to say this:
Spawn houses probably won't be there in the final release.
You will likely enter the world with naught but the two fists minecraft dude's mother gave him, and the shirt on his back. (or not, if you're playing with a shirtless skin.)
In any case, it should be possible for any player, regardless of social/economic standing, to punch down a tree for it's essential wood. Wood is required at practically every level of technology currently available to the player.
He's probably right. Yet another reason why you shouldn't need an axe for trees.

I personally would just mine it.

Night-time comes, creeper comes, time taken up trying to get wood, lowering your defences against a creeper, and weakening the outsides.
'Course, people just use the cheap dirt/glass/etc. in the doorway technique. (I do too, but don't often.)

Seriously, a freaking skeleton coming around the corner when you have no idea they are coming is freaking scary.
Minecraft is the game where you could need new pants in-game and real life.

Have you ever tried to tear at a block of planks to get wood?
