    I haven't seen anything like it, and I find it a bit surprising; most of the physics in Minecraft defy reality.


    However the electrical analog of redstone, the engineering and abstract problem solving could all be applied to science and industry fairly easily.

    I'm not going to watch that video, because I don't think an honest assessment of your CURRENT skillset is what you are really looking for here. What I will say is this:

    If it's something you're even remotely interested in, give it a try. Be realistic in the reactions you expect to get, and keep trying to improve. Doesn't matter how good or bad you are RIGHT NOW, the point/goal is and always should be to be better next time. Better by YOUR standards, not in the judgement of others. Whether you find success in this particular endeavor, or not, you will have learned something in pursuit of your interests. Always keep in mind that you haven't failed until you give up trying. Definitely don't give up before you've even started trying, there's nothing to gain in that approach, and it's a very dangerous precedent to set as a young person.

    Let me start by saying I'm not positive this is the correct forum for this topic, but as it's generally Minecraft related I'll start it here and no hard feeling if it gets moved.

    I was crawling around the interwebs this morning looking for something special to do with my Girlfriends daughter for her 10th birthday. Since she has recently expressed an interest in Astronomy, which I happen to love myself, I thought a trip to the local planetarium might be cool for both of us.

    While searching their events calendar for whats going on in that time I happened upon this:

    A fairy extensive list of Minecraft related events...at my local Museum of Science and Industry. I was aware of a few teachers using Minecraft as a tool in the classroom, to great success, but this is completely new to me. I think it's awesome that a computer game has penetrated the social consciousness to the level that people are finding ways to use it as an educational tool in so many different arenas.

    I was just curious if anyone else has run into programs like this where they live and if they have attended, what they thought, etc. As Minecraft is another common interest I share with her, I may have just struck Birthday gold from an adult perspective (not one, but two things that can engage and entertain BOTH of us). I'm somewhat interested to go check it out for myself, and would love to hear some thoughts from the community.

    I know there's a lot of younger users here, so don't be shy to post what you think.

    Slow progress this week. Started construction on my warehouse. It's a bigger project then I anticipated, but it's coming along. The actual construction is easy, but I've spent quite a bit of time just looking at the layout and thinking so everything works how I want and looks clean when it's finished.

    Progress, so far.

    I decided to go with sorting machines instead of filters, so the ticking of timers doesn't drive me batty while I'm in the area. So I needed RP energy to power the machines. Hopefully the windmill and a few battery boxes will be enough to run a couple sorters and a Blulectric Engine, with some leftover to I can add an alloy furnace or two to my auto-crafting system later. The engine will be used to power the logistics network.


    The barrels are set up, but I haven't started moving my chests over yet. All of the logistics pipes are in place for the mass storage, just waiting on my assembly table to run enough gold chipsets for the modules I need.


    While waiting I started getting the basement set up and laid out for the sorting/autocrafting area. The 2 chests on the floor will be the inputs for mass storage, the 4 hanging on restriction tubes will be for any overflow in-case the barrels fill up. The overflow will be attached to indicator lights so I can easily tell if any part of the system is full. The barrels down here will be used for scrap, I think 6 barrels should be enough to run at least a few full 10M EU cycles on my mass fab.


    Over on the opposite side of the meadow from where I'm building my permanent complex is my temporary bunker, where I've been hanging out in the meantime. It's split into 5 levels.

    1. Surface farms, enchanting and research stations.



    2. Resource processing and fabrication (3 separate main chambers, one for IC2, one for BC, TE and Forestry, and the third for RP2 and Mystcraft. There's also a service area for power production and basic autocrafting)

    IC2 room. Hooked up to my quarry for automated processing. The usual stuff.

    BC, etc.


    RP2 and Mystcraft


    Service area. The BC powerplant is maintenance free, requests lava cells as necessary and turns off when the energy cell is full.


    3. Storage level and general work area.

    There's also semi-hidden piston doors on both sides that contain the service access for my logistics system and more barrels for excess materials. Functional, but nowhere near enough storage area for industrial scale mining operations, which is why I'm moving.


    4. Liquid Storage, processing, refinery.

    Pretty much my standard setup for getting started on liquid resource production. All these will be moved to various new locations and most will be greatly enlarged in the future. Good setup for a first base of operations though.



    5. Boiler room.
    Again, pretty standard. Liquid fueled(recently upgraded, since 2 coke ovens aren't enough for a solid fueled boiler anymore), low pressure, steam turbine and 4 commercial steam engines running the refinery, fermenter, still and squeezer upstairs. The MFSU is there because I was testing the chargeup time at 50% output after the railcraft updates for 1.4.6


    Pretty much everything in the bunker is temporary, even though I got a bit carried away on convenience. Probably gonna repurpose the space once I'm set up at the new site, but for now it's got pretty much everything I need to start building bigger, more complex areas.

    i still feel lost most of the time. I just keep tinkering with things and blowing things up and tearing stuff down and rebuilding until I get it to work/look how I want. Wiki's help. Even the out of date ones can at least give you an idea where to start. Other then that it's the same as playing vanilla, just creative problem solving.

    I don't think world downloads would work so hot, Only the first map was on the genuine FTB pack, which would be easiest, the second was on a personal pack so I would need to upload all my config files with it for it to have any chance of working for anyone. Unfortunately I deleted the first when I started the personal pack, and the second map corrupted, so I'm working on a new one.

    Nothing really to show off, yet. Just another 'getting started' setup.

    I am working on starting the real builds though. Spent most of the day in a creative world trying to iron out my warehouse design. I don't usually build in creative but because it's such an expensive building project I wanted to have a solid direction before I started making stuff.

    The basic concept:

    Bulk storage items (building blocks, metals, etc.) will be distributed to a couple underground subsystems where redpower filters can push them into the appropriate barrels.


    Mk I Logistics Chassis pipes with provider modules can then access all stored items to be sent wherever they are needed/requested on my network.


    I decided to go this way instead of completely relying on Logistics (which I've been doing until now) for a few reasons.

    1. I think it will be quite a bit cheaper to build. Using RP2 for basic sorting/input will save me from having to craft Mk 2 Chassis and 72 additional ItemSink Modules. This way I can get away with only Mk I's and a provider module for each.

    2. I can completely empty barrels and reconfigure my storage layout as needed without having to fuss with reprogramming my network.

    3. I have plenty of the resources needed to make brass tubes, but not a great excess of iron, which is needed in sizeable quantities for Mk II chassis pipes and almost all the modules.

    Building design:






    The only thing I'm not really pleased with is the roof. I just couldn't think of anything interesting to do with it. I'm definitely NOT going to be using stone bricks for it when I build it legit, but I'm not sure what to substitute. Any input/ideas on this would be greatly appreciated.

    As far as the actual shape of the roof, needs more microblocks. I just kind of threw it on there to get an idea of the shape, but when I do it again, I will use quite a bit more microblocks to make the slope look less blocky.

    The rest of the building I'm very happy with.

    Interior:


    A total of 72 barrels and 18 chests. I took quite awhile figuring out what I wanted to be able to store in bulk (barrels) and what could go into the chests in smaller quantities. The chests obviously wont be diamond from the start when I build it in survival, but it was creative mode and they look nice.


    And the service area. I don't think there will be a great need to get in here very often, but I like setting up mechanical areas where I can adjust things if needed, without having to tear into walls. Nothing is actually hooked up to anything, of course. This is a just a mock up, so I can get a feel for the spacing. The actual sorting system will be in the basement. there shouldn't be much to it, since both LP and RP2 are very smart about routing. I think I am going to build a separate facility to handle processing incoming materials off-site.

    I also have a REALLY slick design for magical lanterns (and a general layout) for my Thaumcraft workshop when I get to it, but I don't wan't to show it yet.

    I am willing to post pictures of what I've been working on in my current map, if there's interest. I've definitely refined my starting set-up quite a bit from the first post, but I've honestly been spending more time toying with new ways to automate machines/systems (my first time playing with RedPower) then making things look nice, so there's not a whole lot to look at.

    Uh, 6.12.2.0? If that's the version Railcraft your talking about, I have to disagree. What else did you change? I'm using RC 6.12.2.0, Forge 486 (same results as 480), and Mystcraft 0.9.5.00 and still getting crashes when the cart goes through portals. I think I'm up to date on everything, unless I've overlooked some newer releases...

    I honestly doubt the issue is even Railcraft related.

    Being the holidays, I've just disabled the systems for the time being. Once all the Devs are back from holiday I'm sure it will be sorted promptly.

    I had the same problem. Seems to be a Forge issue. Until it's sorted I replaced the boosters with boarding tracks and it works fine, I assume holding tracks would also work, but my track is a small unidirectional liquid delivery system, so I didn't test the holding tracks (but they work with my liquid loader/unloaders).

    Use ChickenBones EnderStorage for Interdimensional item transport. Railcraft+Mystcraft for liquids. Much less problematic.
