I'd like to use this in 1.7.10 with with Alternate Terrain Generation (ATG) version 0.12.0. Testing has no innate conflicts, though the flowing streams don't seem to generate.
Yes, the excessive canyoning in mountains is annoying. I'm currently rewriting the generator for a much better river flow experience at high altitudes. It will take a while but I think it will be well worth it.
But leave both and canyons and mountain rivers on high altitudes and low altitudes rivers too. :-)
In case of ATG all rivers I found were in mountains in deep canyons. Canyons looks very nice, but I think the rivers on mountains surface and river in plains and parries we need too. Is it possible to make?
ATG support is still up in the air i'm afraid. The plan was after we switch to using the new biome dictionary tags (which we have) TTFTCUTS was going to add support for them in ATG to automatically add our biomes. He hasn't gotten around to that, and i'm not sure if it ever will happen. At this point, it's looking like the only way it can happen is if we bite the bullet and go through with manually adding every biome. With 1.8 now here, it's probably not going to be soon. I'm sorry it's not better news in this regard, but it is the reality of the situation.
Also, with regards to the mod being dead, I knew someone was going to say that. I was with my family over December hence why not much progress was being made.

I use streams 1.0.4 and atg 0.12 well.

Dear, TheAdubbz and over BoP developers!
Please pay you attention to Alternate Terrain Generation Mod (ATG). It is still alive and TTFTCUTS needs you help, as you can see here and newer: http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/mapping-and-modding/minecraft-mods/1291067-atg-alternate-terrain-generation?comment=1555
