He added snow, then he added biomes, then he added swamps to the biomes. Now he adds villages that contain strange creatures with large noses that resemble a type of goblin.
They released a new launcher ages ago, shows the lastest update and what it brought. Also lets you choose to allow or deny an update.

If updating to the new launcher does not work for you it may be you firewall. Try adding an exception in it for javaw.exe and it should fix all your problems.
Again, it works with the new launcher and it worked two days ago. It also works with "pirate friendly" servers. It is not my firewall.

However if you try to play, it will tell you you haven't purchased it. You can only do the 'offline' mode once you have successfully logged in once on a paid account. Sorry.

For anybody else having this issue, downloading the new launcher also worked for me. I was using the pre-1.3 launcher which was the issue. It will not any longer.
But I don't care for the new launcher. Yeah, that would be a way to fix it, but seeing as there has been no statement about requiring the new launcher, it is probably just a bug.
What issues does the bug Cause: When I try to log in with the old launcher, it gives me a "Login Failed" screen.
Specific conditions it occurs in if applicable: It doesn't happen on the new launcher.
Notes: Yeah, I know, a fix is just to download the new launcher, but this IS a bug because nowhere did it say that, to play 1.8/1.8.1 online, you would have to download the new launcher. This is either an unintended bug or something they forgot to tell us.
Re-downloaded the client from the main website, and everything worked fine after that. To anyone who has the same problem, I'd recommend giving that a try.
