Welcome to WorldPainter, a graphical and interactive map painter / generator. Quickly generate expansive, natural looking landscapes, with full manual control over the terrain, using an easy to use and well performing program.

Check out these great examples of both usage and results of WorldPainter. Note that I didn't create these landscapes, or these videos:

    Features:

    • Custom biome painting
    • Create your own custom brushes
    • Add custom objects from bo2 files or schematics to the world
    • Customise the location and frequency of underground ores and resources
    • Add snow and ice
    • Easy to use yet flexible and powerful paint-like tools
    • Create oceans, landmasses, plains and mountains
    • Change the terrain type, add trees and create caverns

To download WorldPainter, go to the official website at https://www.worldpainter.net/

For support, please use the official WorldPainter subreddit!

You can check the change log here. The installers were created with . WorldPainter is free and open source software, released under the GNU Public License (GPL) version 3. The source code is hosted on GitHub.

It should be pretty self-explanatory, and the rest you should be easily able to find out by clicking around. Don't forget to try all your mouse buttons, and try holding them down! Post in this thread to get support from me or other users of WorldPainter.

The Load and Save functions save the map in WorldPainter format. The Export function exports the map to a Minecraft world. By default it is exported right to your Minecraft saves directory. You can then open the world in Minecraft under Singleplayer.

The Import and Merge functions allow you to import the landscape from an existing map, and then merge any changes you make to the landscape back to the existing map. It is not meant for general purpose map editing! WorldPainter is, and always will be, a map generator, not a map editor. Note that this functionality is dangerous! Use it at your own risk. Please see this post for important information about how these functions work, and their limitations.

This tool is not meant to create ready to run single player maps, it's meant to create server levels and adventure maps. The idea is to create the basic landscape, with your mountain ranges, oceans, forests, snow and ice, lakes, hills, etc. using the tool, and then go in and fill in the details with other tools.

    Alpha Test Branch Released

I am releasing an alpha test branch of WorldPainter, for those who would like to help me update WorldPainter to Minecraft 1.13, and have early access to the next version.

NOTE: this is an early test version, with much missing functionality, and undoubtedly many bugs! It is only intended for helping me test and develop the next release, not for serious work.

Any files you save with this version will not be loadable by the current production version, and may not be loadable by the final release. Any or all work you do with this version may be lost, and if you don't manually create backups of your existing worlds first, you may lose them if you work on them with this version.

This alpha installs separately from the regular version, so you will still be able to continue working with the regular version. But note that by default the installer will associate *.world files with the alpha test version, so if you open WorldPainter files by double-clicking on them they may open in the test version!

Please report any bugs you find on GitHub (after first checking that it hasn't already been reported!).

If after all of the above you still want early access and help me develop Minecraft 1.13 support by testing it, then here are the download links:

    Installers: Windows 64-bit / 32-bit - Mac OS X - UNIX/Linux installer / deb / rpm

    Installerless: Windows 64-bit / 32-bit - Mac OS X - UNIX/Linux

Is it possible to create my world using WorldPainter and export it to a playable Minecraft world?

Yes, that is more or less the point of WorldPainter. ;) However you mention that you are a school teacher, which makes me think you may be using the Educational edition. If so then unfortunately WorldPainter doesn't support that; it can (for now) only create maps for the Java edition of WorldPainter.

Looks very promising. Dost it provide any (automatic) smoothing functions eg to get rid of ugly transitions / chunkwalls between different worldgenerator biomes?

Not automatic, but there is a Smooth operation with which you can smooth over chunkwalls and such, yes. Remember that this is a map generator though, not a map editor. It's editing abilities are very limited.

I guess only vanilla blocks are supported?

No, any block you like, provided you know the block ID to use.

    Bug fix release!

I just released version 2.4.3 of WorldPainter, which fixes a bug (introduced in the previous release) which caused an error when loading schematics. That should once again work! Sorry about that. You will be offered the new version automatically when you next start WorldPainter, or you can download it from the first post. Let me know if you encounter any problems and enjoy!

EDIT: Alright I can get this to work on an object layer, but not on a plant layer. I think you're still supposed to be able to do this in a plant layer though, because the plant layer settings window shows a preview to the side that lets you see what it's like when its faded.

There are two types of layers: continuous layers, which can have a varying intensity per block, and on/off (binary) layers, which are either on or off for each block. The plants layers is an on/off layer. This is because for the plants layer, every block that has the layer is guaranteed to get a plant (providing it's a suitable location of course).

The intensity of the brush works differently for each type. For continuous layers (such as the tree layers and custom object layers) the intensity of the layer is set to the intensity of the brush. For on/off layers, the layer is "spray painted" on and the intensity of the brush governs how fast it is "sprayed". At 1% you should notice the layer is dusted on pretty lightly.

    A Hallowe’en present...

Here's a little present to celebrate the falling of the leaves on the northern hemisphere: an autumn forest layer plugin. To install:

    1. Make sure you have the latest version of WorldPainter
    2. Download the plugin here
    3. Place the downloaded file in the WorldPainter plugins folder. You can open it from the Tools menu in WorldPainter. Do not unpack or extract the file!
    4. (Re)start WorldPainter

You should have a new Autumn button on the layers panel which you can use to paint some beautiful autumn forest on your world.

Note that people who don't have the plugin will not be able to load the .world file (if you used the layer on it)! But they will be able to load Minecraft maps you create with it.

I'm back! Had a great time travelling all over the US, but now it's back to work. :-)

Thanks to everyone who has been helping out and answering questions while as I was away! And feel free to continue to do that, I would like this to be a place where users help each other as much as a place for asking me questions.

I'm not going back over everything that was posted in my absence, so if you still have an unsolved problem or unanswered question, feel free to post it again!

I've been working on some cool stuff that should be coming up somewhere in the near future.

    (Repost for visibility)

Just a heads up: I will be traveling for the next three months, so expect support and new releases to be (even more ;)) minimal during April, May and June. I'll be in the US, going roughly from east to west, so who knows, perhaps I'll meet some of my American users!
