Start playing a world in single player, and then press ESC, click "Open to LAN" and select your settings and open it. Then have someone else on your same network go to Multiplayer, and it should show up as a LAN world.

No it's basically the same. .minecraft/bin and delete those files, then delete Minecraft.jar(wherever you saved it), and reinstall through Minecraft.net.

Sorry... major facepalm right there. Anyway, it seems it's a Java problem. I would recommend updating to the latest Java version, Version 7 Update 67

Also, you could try taking off force anti-aliasing, which seems to fix the problem for some people as well.
