I agree! Especially the part about the different trees having different saplings.
But if different trees have different planks, will they make different looking wooden crafts (doors and fences and the like)? And also it would be mildly annoying that the different wood types wouldn't stack.

The latest update added two new types of tree, those birch, and pine (the ones with darker trunks).

Yeah I've noticed that mushrooms seem to spawn more often and in lighter areas than before the update. And yeah squids do sometimes do that.
That creeper must of wandered on to the surface from a cave or something. They don't spawn in the sunlight.

Mystery solved. There normally aren't ghast spawners in the regular game. Hence, they are buggy.
