Burning wood to make paper doesn't really make any sense. Traditionally, it was made out of papyrus, which is a type of reed, so paper production makes perfect sense now.
If you warp from world to world, the direction you are facing is maintained. (i.e if you were facing east on the overworld and you warped to the Nether, you would still be facing east in the Nether)
The map is infinitely large. You will never ever ever never run out of anything. Ever.
Also, Notch didn't add charcoal to make coal replenishable, he added it to make it easier to make torches on the first few nights (when you may not have found coal yet).
