I know there is already blocking with swords, but I thought it would be much cooler if there was a actual shield. They would only take a few hits before breaking (depending on the level, iron, gold, diamond, wood) so they wouldn't be too over powered. You could make them out of iron, gold and diamond and enchant them as well. You would have to scroll over to it, because you can only use one hand. And it would make combat more tactical.

Or the same thing except with diamond, gold and wood.

EDIT: Santast suggested that you could craft a item with a shield and sword and when you scrolled over to that item, you could right click to attack and left click to block. I thought that idea was pretty good too.
As many people said already, it makes you take a little less damage. But, I think if you could have a shield instead. And hold switch to it when you want to block, although when it got hit it would take quite a bit of damage so you can't just run around with a shield and never die. And they could still hit you from behind. And it would make combat more tactical.
I don't have a problem with anything but this. Physically putting the word "kid" or "child" in the game is a bad idea. make it subtle, don't force these features in the way your describing it.
There is a big difference between giving younger people an OPTION to play, and INCLUDING A WHOLE MODE FOR THEM. If there is a Physical "kids mode" in the game, it will draw every 3 year old from barney and onto minecraft, having a subtle hunger bar option will not directly target kids.
all I'm saying is that there is a way to implement the features you describe, without killing the minecraft community as a result.

That way mostly kids of people that play Minecraft will play "kids mode", instead of every kid ever and ruin it for everyone else. And why not call it "Friendly mode" or something like that so it's less obvious.
and what about the older audience? what happens when minecraft gets labeled a "kiddie game"?

the second people start making fun of others because they play the same game their 2 year old brother does, the second people will start thinking minecraft is a kids game.
It's the same with pokemon, people label it a kids game and don't play it because they think it's childish, when in reality, there is an insane amount of strategy involved in fights that no 8 year old could possibly understand.
not only that, it would decrease the amount of new, older players that start playing the game and deserve to experience MC the way it was designed.
The majority of people that play the game are 8+ why drop them for a mere 2-5 year old audience?

All he is trying to do is open up the audience for Minecraft and make it enjoyable for everyone. Now people 10-40 or more play, and adding a "kids mode" will make it 3-40 or so.
No, Minecraft is supposed to in a very primitive time. Not have guns and cars to satisfy little kids that want everything to be call of duty related. Download a mod if you want this stuff.
