The colours played a huge role in it for me, in Beta they were a lot brighter and had more of a yellow tint to them. Now they are very dull and grey.

The smooth grass blending in Beta did result in some very pretty colors which is something I miss as well. Colors between biomes transitioned over quite a large area, compared to the 3-5 block transitions we see in the current terrain.

Could you sum up the 10,220 posts over 500+ pages for me? I really, really, really...do not have that kind of time.

Or you could just read the last few pages that actually pertain to 1.7 in which there are plenty of examples of why people think terrain isn't completely improved...

I have read the posts and the most important parts of the discussion very carefully and also participated in it here and there. I just don't agree with every point. It is not so that if someone does not agree, he or she would be a bad reader. The word "problem" is not an objective statement in this discussion, because not everyone will see a problem in the things mentioned here. The most neutral word to use here, is the word "limitations." Because every terrain generator has its limitations, also the beta one. And then you can discuss about of the limitations are (too) disturbing for you or not. And personally I can for so far live with them pretty well, at least enough to try survival with enthousiasm again. I'm truly very happy with 1.7 and hope only that some small bugs will be killed soon.

Was more referring to the people that just post something along the lines of "This thread is now completely invalid, stop whining." than you. Also, I'm not saying that you can't disagree with the ideas here.

People really need to read the OP and posts in the thread before assuming everything is improved.

This update wasn't bad, I don't see the point in moaning about it. Did is solve all problems? No. Was it a step in the right direction? Yes. Compare it to beta 1.8, and this world generator knocks it out of the roof. We got some form of a temperature system. Height variation was relaxed (But could be better). Not every biome looks the same with how many variations there are now.

We should be thankful Mojang at least attempted given the fact that they are trying to prioritize other things, instead of moaning about it.

This post about sums up my opinion on 1.7. While it clearly did not fix all the problems with terrain, it at least gave some hope that Mojang hadn't disregarded it completely. Though it may be a bit sloppy in its current state, what we have in 1.7 is the basis of a terrain system with a lot of potential. Whether or not they choose to expand on it in the future is yet to be seen. Hopefully, they will take it off the back burner sometime in the near future and focus on it a bit more after they finish up with all of the overhauls to systems and such.

Seeing as how they claim to be celebrating "the upcoming pre-release" on the Mojang.com post for the latest snapshot, I doubt there will be any more drastic changes to the terrain. With things such as beaches, biome transitions, etc still being so sloppy, it really surprises me that they don't seem to want to devote any more time to the terrain. I was really hoping for more than new biomes. Oh well, maybe next update...

It seems Mojang has turned 1.7 from a Terrain Update to a Command, Shader, and Make-MCEdit-Obsolete-Because-We-Don't-Support-3rd-Party-Programs update.

They do seem to be focusing less and less on terrain. :/ Hopefully they will get back to it after finishing all the things they are currently focusing on. It would be a shame if they left the terrain as it is now, there's so much more they could do with it.

Would it be at all possible to add any the new flowers/shrubs or biomes to the beta generation as a terrain option?

Because a biome may have only one "alternate" variant, and for Forest it's Flower Forest. IDK why they implemented it like that if they still have X-hills that are not alternate variants of biomes.

If that's the case, could they not have Forest Hills M be a biome variant? This occurs in Birch Forest Hills.

I've been wondering, why haven't they added a Forest M or Forest Hills M biome variant? Most of the other biomes have M variants, but not Forest. I also have been noticing a lack of the new swamp generation (http://imgur.com/9sFoOhd) for the past few snapshots. Personally, I liked this new feature in swamps. Has anyone else noticed it's gone missing or is it just me?

Why can't it both vary in density and height?

I agree. I also find it stupid that the large oak trees only spawn in Extreme Hills and Jungles.

So does anyone think Mojang will be doing anything related to the density of trees/shrubbery in terrain? I really think it needs to be a bit more random. Like this forest:

It's rather boring with trees spaced out the same throughout the entire biome. It also lead to ugly transitions between biomes with no trees and those with many. Kinda relates to the topic of biome transitions I suppose, but I'm mainly wondering what their plans are (if any) for the density.

YES! b1.7.3 had this kind of terrain feature. I still play with the same worlds I created in b1.7.3. This one is near my spawn base:

It's not a desert. It's some kind of sandy plains.

I believe they were a continuation of beaches to simulate lower coastal areas as I said. But yea, they definitely need to return to the terrain at some point.

That was always possible, and it's a bug. Decorator (not terrain shape generator!) assumes that the whole chunk is in one biome, and only checks it once.

Damn, I saw some of that too and was hoping it was biome transitioning/mixing as well :P

On the topic of beaches, I was looking over the Alternate Terrain Generation thread and was reminded of something else about old beaches that I'd like to see return to vanilla terrain. Low coastal regions such as this:

This screenshot is obviously not an example of how they used to generate, but my point is that they look very nice and are a feature I hope to see worked on in 1.7. Though, Mojang needs to worry about getting beaches flat before working on this. :P
