Breadlord.
Exactly what is he lord of? Bread? Isn't bread used to represent the body of Christ our lord? So what is he? Lord of Lords? Talk about a douche.
I was gonna say that, but it seems like you already summed it up. At least we can agree on that; can't stand that guy. =P -

Breadlord raises fair points.
Let's abolish official state marriage, make it a law for whichever religious, ethnical or sexual group to call it as they want.
That way, Catholics can still have their own church marriage and gay people can get married too.
Also, you can't force an institution like the Church to hold gay marriages, because you have no right to do so.
But now, being married isn't a legal status anymore.
Why should I, as a recently divorced tax payer, have to contribute more money than someone who just got married?
It's not fair to me or the people who surround me.
It's not a problem that I don't approve of gay marriage, it's that I don't approve of marriage as a legal thing at all.
Because it's a waste of money, both in preparation and divorce, it wastes other tax payer's money for some random benefits when they could just get a better goddamn job.
Although, I would watch the sh*t out of a gay divorce show.
That's what I've been saying except more emphasis on abolishing marriage tax benefits. People began to argue "well what do we do about other things." Well, they're clueless idiots that don't seem to understand there are other legal documents that can be written up to have you covered in case of a emergency. Insurance companies can redesign their plans to incorporate households, and its not impossible to reform the tax code. -

Metadigital posted a message on Suicide More Likely in Intelligent PeopleI suppose I'll respond to this and set it in a better direction.Posted in: Politics, Philosophy, News and Science
Intelligence and depression are certainly linked. Depression and suicide of course are. It's one of those topics that people who don't understand won't understand, because to understand is to face the cause of the depression itself, and therefore be at threat of succumbing to it. It's much safer to simply dismiss it than confront it because it's a battle that might not be possible to win.
In fact, I don't think depression is a thing that is overcome. That's what makes it such a terrible experience. That's why it always seems so hopeless. That's why some people die to it of their own volition.
There was a video floating around the internet recently that I think does a really good job of illustrating the battle with depression. I found it through Austin Wintory, a musician I follow. He did the score to it. I highly recommend it for anyone who has depression, deals with someone who has depression, or seeks to understand depression.
Whether or not suicide is the right answer is really not the right question to be asked. Instead, the question should be simply asking why so many intelligent people are choosing to end their own lives. The answers may be surprising to hear, especially for those who don't want to hear it. -

They just feel like they are in an inescapable void. This is all false in reality, and can be easily overcome. Instead, some people just fall victim to their own weakness.
Easily overcome.
How many times have I heard that before. And boy does it make me angry because it's so infuriatingly untrue. A ridiculous myth propagated by the ignorant. First, I'd like to repeat something:
You're trying to (probably unintentionally) dehumanize them which makes it easier to avoid actually empathizing with them.
Second, I'd like to point out that you don't know jack about depression or weakness. Probably one of the reasons depression and mental illness is such a huge problem is because of this idiotic idea that it's a weakness and that it's "easily changed".
Let me tell you something: having a bone set is easy. Healing psychological wounds is damn near impossible.
You're right about one thing: depression does usually manifest as a feeling of total emptiness; a void. That is their perception of it and that perception is very real to them (this shouldn't be surprising: everyone's perception is real to themselves).
So they have the very real perception that their life is a void, that it has no meaning or value, they can't find joy or pleasure in anything, the thought of having to deal with this for years is frightening and upsetting, and the only thing they can feel any sort of desire for whatsoever is the wish that it would just stop. Just make it stop. I think the thought of suicide makes a lot of sense to a person in that position, because I've been there, several times. Doesn't seem weak at all.
But it certainly does take some kind of strength of character to keep going. To just keep living in spite of all of that. Perhaps the one thing that saved me was the realization of just how strong I had to be to survive. And that sure as hell wasn't (and still isn't) easy. 8 months of therapy and I'm a relatively minor case. I certainly don't suffer from severe depression, but it still took 8 months just to get me where I'm mostly functioning normally. And I'm still not done with it. I'll probably be at this for years before I'm capable of actually taking care of this on my own.
So I have a pretty short temper when it comes to this kind of belittling, dehumanizing attitude being foisted onto people who suffer from depression. I will not stand for that crap. I will not let them be dehumanized and I certainly won't let them be blamed for their problems. Nobody sits down and decides that they're going to cause their depression. -

Liberals: Want everyone to have an easy lazy life, where they have to do nothing and the government babysits them
Conservatives: Believe that competition is ok, and that you have to work to become great, and to allow the ability to be lazy. The government stays away.
Liberals say they want equality, but they don't they want whites and rich to suffer, and non-whites and poor people to prosper. They want the hardworking to be knocked down and the lazy to prosper. (BTW no racist hate here or anything, I have some family members, that aren't white. I'm simply stating what they want, by what they say.)
That is why I am conservative. I think that lazy people, should remain in the poor, and hard working people should be wealthy.
Okay, no offense, but there are only two possible conclusions to be taken from the above text.
1. You're trolling.
... or...
2. You have absolutely no understanding of politics or of people in general.
There is literally no other conceivable explanation for you posting the above nonsense...
So, take your pick... -

Ok. Now I understand. Women who aren't married are "on the market" like prostitutes. That's why we pay for the meal. So just make sure she isn't married and you won't waste your money on her food.

Just realized that Jesus is sometimes called "Lord of Lords" so I missed the opportunity to say "Lord of Lord of Lords" which would have increased the value of my post 10 fold.

This argument, while valid, is based on current assumptions about the law. If we removed marriage from the legal books I imagine we would have something similar to civil unions to take it's place. That I have no issue with.
For example, maybe I want to sign a document to give someone the right to make decisions for me while I am say... in a coma. Why would you assume that person would also be my wife? Maybe I love my wife very much but don't trust her decision making in a time of crisis?
There are plenty of solutions for the valid problem you have brought up. "Legal Marriage" isn't the only answer.
I didn't say we should deny gay people the right to do anything. I'm very pro-equality. But look at it this way... if there was no national attention to the problem of marriage (let's say that next year gay marriage is universally legal and everyone stops caring about the issue) we wouldn't be able to talk about the fact that the government should just stay out of it entirely. Well we could... but no one would listen. At least right now, in the heat of the moment, some people will hear and agree that this is an issue between two people and everyone else should just GTFO.
My wife and I did this for 5 years before signing a government document for the added benefits; tax breaks, medical issues, etc.

We need fewer monster-regulations and more monster-education. Every man woman and child should have a monster with them at all times and that monster should be trained to defend them.
