I believe the correct way would be to see what their current growth is, then make the prediction based on that. It'd likely be the most accurate, assuming there isn't any change to subscriber growth.
Other than the whole taming thing, this honestly isn't THAT horrible, but I have a question.
Will the villagers effected change back after it ends? Last thing people need is their Iron Golem farm getting destroyed cause someone decided to spawn this.
The taming seems fairly OP TBH, more so since the mob gets buffed and that any non boss mob can be effected. Why not just have the smaller Nether Moon be a vanity item like the Dragon Egg or Beacon? A sort of "yea I got this" thing?
If Mojang was gonna add a way to revert it, they would have by now. Not to mention that, IIRC the response was more of a 50/50 split regarding the cooldown.
In addition, if they do it for this, whats stopping them from, say, adding game rules to remove weather? Or only certain mobs? Or as Mastermined pointed out, certain blocks like say, TNT.
If you don't like the changes, play on versions before the changes. Mojang isn't gonna revert it just because of "community pressure".

Most of these are either too cheap (Wither, Poison, Nausea), or take too much to be worth it (Haste, Saturation)
Why would any old bone work for a Wither Potion? Wouldn't a Wither Skeleton Skull make more sense?
