Back in 1.7, I really wanted worlds with bigger biomes.
I remember watching some preview videos of 1.8, talking about how hpw they were going to make that happen. In my mind, that made it sound like the worlds had the potential to be even more diverse than they were before! Imagine yetis in a good ol' pre 1.8 snowy mountain range that wasn't the size of a small parking lot!
And when I finally got the update, the first couple worlds I generated seemed kind of nice. They were flat, sure, but I thought I just spawned in a few relatively flat worlds, and after all, I did find a few extreme hills biomes which managed to seem unique at the time. Then I read that the ONLY mountains were in the EHs, and that there was almost no variation in the terrain outside of them. That didn't sound good to me, but I decided to give it a chance and see if the terrain still managed to seem interesting. Alas, it turns out that is just REALLY boring.
We have plains, which are absolutely boring. We have flat forests, which are also absolutely boring. We have waterlogged deserts which never have anything interesting in them. We have the monotonous taiga and ice planes, which go on forever, but aren't that cool. We have the extreme hills I mentioned earlier, which feel very lifeless. Jeb also added jungles, which are actually kind of nice, but like everything else, they don't have anything that sets them apart from one another. It's rare for me to be inspired to name any places in my world now, unlike before.
Notch decided to be a genie: He gave me larger biomes, but now they're not fun to explore. I got what I wished for, but not what I wanted.
Congradulations: This thread now has the support of someone so important that he never changed his avatar. Sorry if this post seems off. I was kind of tired when I wrote this.

Leonard900 posted a message on Did the Terrain Become BORING? (UPDATE 6/5/13 - 1.7 is a biome update?)Well, I can see that I'm not the only one who thinks that some of the current biome colors could use some changing.Posted in: Discussion
There are a couple more things I thought of that I think should be mentioned though.
1. While the rest of the biomes have remained the same, forests did actually have their biome colors changed. If you look at a forest in beta 1.7 and compare it to one in 1.2.5, the current ones have a much more pale color than the old forests. This doesn't have anything to do with lighting either, since sunlight is one thing that wasn't changed by the update to the lighting engine.
2. There are also some cases where technical biomes will have biome colors themselves, when they really shouldn't. The only ones I've seen this in are beaches and rivers, but it is still noticable enough to be an issue. The rivers have the same color that oceans have, which isn't too noticeable if a river is in a biome with similar colors, but it doesn't blend in well with biomes like deserts or jungles where the biome colors are completely different. The beaches have about the same biome color that deserts have, and again, it doesn't blend in well with most biomes because of that. I only noticed this after the release of 1.2.2, so either I've just been inattentive in the past or these structures used to have the same colors as the biome they were in and this issue can be solved by bringing that back. -

ficion posted a message on I do not like MOJANG... at least the now days MOJANGWell, I'm a disappointed with Mojang. With the dev team, and how they are developing Minecraft.Posted in: Discussion
This is my opinion, I don't like people who says "if you don't like it, don't play it!", because this is my thread and my opinion, and I can say whatever I want, as the same way that you can say what ever you want, feel free to say it.
Slow and incomplete features.
New features are great, when they fit to the game and better the gameplay is perfect. But, sometimes I feel that they put like a 1/3 of the complete feature. Even they can add the rest of it, but years after. Or some features that should really be added (because the entire community want, because is obvious, because will logical better the game, etc) aren't added, or are added after years of they ask (or added, but incomplete).
For example:
-They add biomes to the game on Alpha 1.2.0, but the grass side color don't match until Beta 1.5. ModLoader add this several time before.
-They add different color wooden planks on 1.2.4, but basic things like slabs or stairs aren't added (they could even add different color wooden things, but no). They will be added on 1.3, but several time will pass to it. Jeb did said that the stairs will no be added!. Also, Minecraft got a update after 1.2.4: 1.2.5, but they did not add it.
-They add Enchanting, but you need to kill several Zombies to get level 50, and then get a insecure enchant. Making the Enchanting boring.
-Cocoa plants was ask it since their release...
-The terrain was pretty awesome before Beta 1.8. It have form, eyecandy, variation and it was just awesome to explore and discover the randomness of it. They delete that terrain and put another early tested, ugly, predictable, and strange. Then release the game... Is like Notch did finish Classic Minecraft and then release it, with that uncompleted game...

-"We want tomatoes!"
-"Lets give them bananas",
or How they don't listen the community.
(Sorry if I miss spell million, I speak Spanish, so "millón" is 1.000.000)
Someones will say that listen to a 8 million community is hard. But, I know that not ALL of the 8 millions will try to ask them things. Lets say, 2 or 3 millions of people. Now, we have the forum, you just have to have a look every sometime to "Minecraft Survival" to watch what we want or what we talk. Only the titles. Whats some Youtube videos, etc. Know about what the community say or want is very very important. But is like they never look they forums, they never answer posts, etc. They forget what makes Minecraft big: the community. Even if Minecraft is a bad game, the community make it awesome game. But why regular game to a big community. Why not a awesome game with a awesome community. Why not?
They are scared of something, they like to copy to Terraria, I really don't know...
Did you ever played Terraria? Is a awesome game, it have some things similar to Minecraft, but TOTALLY different objectives.
Well let's see:
-The Corruption biome on Terraria have pink grass (with spores too!) and weird enemies. Also, very deep, you can found big musrooms (in a mushroom biome). Mushrooms islands have pink grass with spores and weird animals with big mushrooms.
-Terraria have potions and reforge of items (weapons and items, better the items with money, something that you get killing enemies). Then Minecraft have potions and enchanting (better the items with exp, something that you get killing enemies).
-Terraria have big biomes and mixed without grass gradient. Then Minecraft have the same.
-Terraria have Jungle. The Minecraft...
-Terraria have money, something that you get killing enemies. Minecraft have exp, killing... enemies.
-Terraria have NPC trading. Then...
-Terraria have Emerald and Ruby... (Emerald was Ruby before, on Minecraft).
-Terraria have Dugeons, Minecraft have Strongholds, similar to Dugeon.
-Terraria have Vines...
I'm not saying that features are bad. But, maybe Mojang are scared of the release of Minecraft. Maybe they think that Minecraft wasn't enough mature. But they was wrong. The game was becoming better to awesome to fantastic. :/
Striked because people don't get it
Anyway, I lose the inspiration... -

Kiry posted a message on Did the Terrain Become BORING? (UPDATE 6/5/13 - 1.7 is a biome update?)Wouldn't that basically require a massive overhaul anyway?Posted in: Discussion
Even if the "Extreme Hills" biome was removed and full height variation returned, the world would still generally be the same. There use to be crossover biomes such as Savannah, which gave a sense of climate but now it just randomly places biomes anywhere. The beaches look crappy because they spawn on top of existing terrain, then it just drops to the ocean floor. There's no room for the beach to spawn the way they use to. Then there's the odd blotchy pattern of sand, dirt and clay that generates underwater. -

Jango40 posted a message on Did the Terrain Become BORING? (UPDATE 6/5/13 - 1.7 is a biome update?)Actually, the biomes themselves haven't been improved even slightly after 1.8. Jeb just added mini-biomes, like DesertHills and ForestHills. That means, even more forced generation. The **** got even worse.Posted in: Discussion -

I like the terrain generation as it is now; the terrain looks more like a real world. The biomes all make sense and look like I would expect them to if I walked through real terrain of the same type. If I could change anything it would only be to ensure snow doesn't generate next to deserts.
I'm pretty sure I've posted in this topic before to point out how futile this is; continuing to hold onto blind hope that someone might take notice even though it's been 7 months and even if someone from Mojang has seen this they obviously don't give a crap. I just wanted to interject to break the flow. You can all continue to circle-jerk each other now.
Earlier in development, Minecraft was noted for its world generator. Realism would just destroy it. Notch's and Jeb's perception on real life is pretty dull, so I and many others would rather them refrain from making this game realistic. And I know biome placement isn't relevant here, but I like some of my deserts touching taigas and other snow biomes. Why? Because it's possible and if I don't like it I can just ignore it instead of ruining fun for other people by being a terrain nazi.
Mojang rarely ever checks these forums and now that the whole issue regarding the terrain has become pretty popular, I think it's not that bad to attempt to make a difference. As said before, changing the terrain is a time consuming job, and I'm sure people are pretty busy there.

I find there's nothing wrong with making something easier in games. It makes them more playable and over all more fun. If you like a challenge, get an extra job... it's what you're craving.
I'm also not a fan of gravel in general by anymeans. I've only had one world that I actually kept and I removed almost all the gravel in that world. No wait I did remove it all with world edit.
As for the sand beaches being dulled? I've played since 1.3 and I've never thought sand beaches were very abundant.
Over all I don't find the terrain generation is "boring". It could use ALOT more villages, ruins, structures in general, but it's not any more "boring" that it was in prior releases. I however don't like that there's so many classifcation of biomes. Like "extreme mountain", "ice plains", etc. There should be a few basic biomes that determine what blocks, weather, and mobs that spawn in there and as for whether or not it has hills or mountains or plains should just be a part of terrain generation. You might say "well how would the upcoming Emerald be generated?" Well, they could make it available in all biomes however in only generates in terrain above sea level.
How does the current terrain make anything easier?! Makes it more playable? I guess that's why I immediately stopped playing Minecraft after 1.8. The rest of your reddened post doesn't make sense.
Who cares if you're a fan of gravel or not? Are you forced to dig it up whenever you see it? No, you can ignore it. The community isn't centered around you. A lot of players would like to have gravel beaches back.
Dullness ≠ Rarity. Maybe you should find a dictionary. You obviously have no idea what you're talking about.
Ok I agree that height variation shouldn't be dependent of the biome it's in except for plains and the other obvious ones. I disagree that it needs more villages and other structures. They are common enough as it is and we don't need them spammed around. They are an exploration factor and having them spammed all over the place would just dull the game out, as if it needs any more dulling. -
