This and the 'Alpha' excuse are really getting old. I have two points for you:
1. Feedback is important for a game's development. We don't get vocal about something sucking, and how the heck is Notch supposed to know?
2. We're upset not just because SMP isn't working, but because we were promised a working copy - had Notch said right from the beginning that SMP wouldn't be getting anything out of the update, no one would have been upset when these things were left out of the so-called 'massive update'. Granted, some people would have complained even then but the point is a lot of people got their hopes up and nothing to show for it.
Actually SMP did get something out of it:
Doors, redstone wires, and furnances now work perfectly.
Having to rely on temporary light in the beginning of the game is not necessarily that terrible. It all depends on how long torches last, and how much light they will offer if they are "out." Ideally, I think they should last several days in game time (about an hour,) and they should have a light source rating of about 4 when they go out, as opposed to the 15 they normally have.
Getting flint and steel is trivially easy, and you wouldn't have to relight all of your torches, just the ones in important areas you need to travel through. Also, if they still maintain a dim amount of light, there will still be less monsters than normal, and they will be easier to see coming than in pitch darkness.
Making permanent light hard to get is the correct design decision for Minecraft, IMO. Even so, it's understandable that people would be upset by the change as they have been spoiled for so long by torches. But I think the changing of all current torches into lanterns should help mitigate that.
A harder end game would be much more preferable, not a harder start game. The issue is the extreme degree of change not the concept itself. I like challenge, I don't like the fact every single square on the map becomes dangerous, it makes the concept of a shelter somewhat mute. That is just turning challenge into grind plain and simple. Sure when you have access to hell it's easier, but it would be taking challenge and making it into a steep difficulty curve which flattens off when you are established in hell. IMHO it should work the other way around.
Using your idea I'd put a candle on every single square and it would look ludicrous, but save relighting them over and over again.
Exactly.
People are ignoring that if torches weren't already infinite, you'd never get to the point where you'd have the resources needed to enter/master hell and get some glowing rocks in the first place, although this is largely determine by how long torches actually last.
Although if they last a long time, what exactly was the point of lanterns again? To save on the inconvience of relighting torches?
I support this.
For those who don't like it, I say this:
Imagine turning off every mob but creepers. Or, say, Ghasts. Now, imagine that every mob spawn is replaced with that mob type. Chaos. Bloody Chaos.
And the system abuse to easily farm gunpowder?
I don't think so Tim. To much room to be abused.
FARM GUNPOWDER AND... do what with it? How would it affect anybody else's game experience whatsoever?
The only issue is if you could do that in multiplay, which you wouldn't, because monster spawn settings are controlled by the admin.
Technically, he didn't say they spawned "near gates".
Question: "Will the ghasts only be in hell, or will they be in the normal dimension as well?" Notch: "If you've got a gate, they can (rarely) spawn there."
The question is, does his "there" refer to "gate", or to "normal dimension"?
It could be argued that he said they can rarely spawn anywhere in the normal world if you have a gate. That's a big difference.
If so, that'd be kind of cool.
YOU JUST TOTALLY DOOMED THE REAL WORLD BY OPENING A PORTAL TO HELL, as I'd expect would happen in such a situation.
Normal world mobs spawn on dimly lit normal blocks, and Hell mobs spawn on dimly lit hell blocks.
So if you take some hell blocks back with you and leave them somewhere dark, INSTANT DEMONS!
I think notch is actually some type of succubus that feeds on the drama and anguish of the minecraft fans. Only thing that explains the amount of grief that comes out of almost every thing he posts. The trolls on the boards are just his minions for when he needs a snack.
*cough* Valve *cough*
What, does Valve have a habit of making fans cry so they can drink their tears?

And I have to try this now, but not to burn down houses. :cool.gif:

If so this is completely useless to the average player. You'd also have too walk in and check on the chest to see if anything was actually stolen.

I'd buy notch a beer if he did that.

Portals link to the closest portal in the area though.
Reactivating a 'dead' portal wouldn't make another one in hell?
