Hmm ,strange, I installed the wibu version of Ubuntu [11.04] and managed to get Minecraft working, took me a while to do though.
First of all I looked up a tutorial about installing Java in Linux and it told me to open up the Terminal and type in
sudo apt-get install default-jre
And it installed Java for me and set it up for me, took several minutes but after that all I had to do was set the Minecraft file as an Executable and then run it and Minecraft worked for me.
Now, this is just me trying to help by sharing how I did it. I hope it helps, if not hope you get it sorted out soon.

I have a very low end Laptop and frankly I have more trouble getting Minecraft to work in Windows than I do in Linux which I have only just started to use today, it even plays better for me. I can agree that it takes longer to do stuff but then again I'm a newbie with Linux xD
Thanks for the guide, it's helped me go from a very bad 1 fps >.> to a playable but laggy 8-10 fps lol, its a marked improvement considering until 3 days ago my normal laptop couldn't play minecraft at all >.>'. I'm hoping for the next Optifine update to help me out further.
