I used to manage and host a semi popular server a few years ago, and I'm wanting to rebuild and recreate my server with the same mods and everything. However, Craftbukkit seems to be no longer in development.
It sounds like you're having trouble with your Internet, maybe your Internet isn't good enough to host a proper Minecraft server with more than 2 people.
Thanks for your interest in us. We're NerdCraft, a strange group of nerds and geeks, and I do mean strange. We're a pretty close community, and rather social. Our server is hosted in Chicago from and it is dedicated, so if you want to be playing in the middle of the night that's fine. Most of our players are from North America but we do have ones from England, Sweden, France, Germany and Australia. Those are just the ones we know of! Our community is a somewhat mature one...we're all prone to acting silly once in a while.
A few things to note about our server, swearing is allowed. Not excessively for no reason, but it is. If you're uncomfortable with swearing you might want to move along. Secondly fire spread is disabled and so is lava placement. So no one's going to burn down your house. If you want lava placed just ask an admin. We have a forum and a teamspeak. Rules
Like most servers we have some rules that our players and staff abide by.
No Griefing - We all work hard and love our builds, if we find you just starting to grief something, you will be warned, if you continue that results in a ban. Otherwise straight up ban. No Stealing - We may have lockette and such but that doesn't mean if you find an unlocked chest you should just take things. Stealing also results in a ban. No Spamming - This includes excessive use of caps. We're pretty social and like to actually talk to each other not just see spam flying by. We don't need to hear about every single block you break either, this isn't twitter, so please do not use chat like it is. Spamming will get a warning and if unheeded, a ban. No Cheating - That includes hacking, modding, xraying, flying, and anything that gives you an advantage over others. Mini-maps are fine as long as they don't show you player, mob, or ores and such. Cheating is an outright ban Don't Be a Jerk - No one really likes jerks, not even other jerks. It's best to check out what the other people around are like before breaking out your holocaust jokes and start trolling. Some people are fine with it, others are not. Continuing such behavior around people who aren't alright with it counts as harassment and will get you banned if you continue.

It's not dead, it's just not what it used to be.
The thing that created Minecraft (The Community) has died. Everything we see now is children and newcomers to the scene that just make things worse.
It's a pessimistic view, sure. However it is the truth.
