He thinks that if you got a 144 hz monitor, then you could tell the difference between 60 and 144. Which makes no sense because you only see in 60. It's not like if you got a 144 hz monitor, you are going to start seeing in 144 hz.

You have titled your thread incorrectly.

a 144Hz monitor means it will be able to display 144fps at a maximum. 60Hz, of course, is limited to, well, 60fps.

Realistically "Hz" is not even really the correct word anymore. It was the vertical refresh rate on CRT tech, measuring how many times a second the scanline moved from the bottom to the top of the screen. (They also had horizontal refresh rates which were typically in the Khz range). Of course LCDs work via sets of transistors on a per-pixel basis, and do not need to be constantly "refreshed" with any sort of scanning beam, unlike phosphors. So Hz with a LCD really measures the update rate of the display itself, and how often the data can be changed.

People don't "see" in 60hz or 60fps or any framerate. Our vision does not work that way, and is incredibly more complicated with the information we "see" being taken from stimuli over a longer period. This is why objects tend to "blur" when they move fast, simply because that is how we perceive them. It is not because we are "sampling" the environment around us.

configured properly, a 144hz monitor on a system capable of driving it will look better, full stop.

not true, the reason they did it was because of how the operating system works, so if it was called windows 9 the operating system would be unable to tell if it was windows 9 of windows 95 and stuff like that

What I find amazing about this theory is that, thanks to the Internet, it has spread so widely. So many people now associate this little factoid with being true.

The Original source is a Reddit comment by a person saying they worked for Microsoft. We'll ignore for the moment that the same user was talking about what they were going to do after they graduate from high school in another post.

The big problem here is that so few people seem to have actually investigated it themselves, and instead took it as given. This may be because they don't have the technical expertise to do so, or they are lazy.

But the reality is that it is so untrue, so blatantly false, so impossibly false, that it being accepted as true so widely is very concerning.

The short of it is that it only could affect Java programs. Most of the "Search results" on grepcode being used to substantiate the severity of the issue are ancient repositories or even very old revisions of programs that have since been fixed. Many are programs that aren't even intended to ever run on Windows (Java programs included in Linux distros, for example).

The bigger issue is that it wouldn't even be a problem to begin with. Windows has had a massive application compatibility database that Microsoft has kept up to date. If a major application was written in Java and would have been affected by this they would have simply added it to the database. In this case- the issue is almost trivial. Add another entry for javaw and have Windows report it is Windows 8 or Windows 7 instead.

The reality is that the name was not chosen for any technical reason whatsoever.

Mojang doesn't have any technical support. They have customer support- not the same thing.

I suspect microshaft will live up to it's name, and kill the normal PC version when it suits them.

I see you are still stuck in the 90's and early 2000's. That is something of a shame. The role that Microsoft filled in in those times as a "Big Bad" has been usurped by Google, who now hold the title for the singel biggest corporation that has the most control and violates the most anti-trust litigation across the globe. They've done quite well in a sense since, unlike Microsoft, they have managed to get into that position while retaining the undying devotion of countless individuals, who have apparently been led to believe that Google can't possibly do anything evil, because it's not in their motto.

Microsoft, has recently Open Sourced their flagship programming language compilers on github. They have open sourced their .NET Client libraries. They have open sourced innumerable other things. They've also switched their licensing so that you can get Free versions of programs like Visual Studio that provide the full capabilities of the Professional editions, in the interest of encouraging Open Source development.

You know, force millions of minecraft users to get windows 10 which is ransomware, and thus boost their profits by a predictable amount.

Ransomware: "a type of malicious software designed to block access to a computer system until a sum of money is paid." Windows 10 is in no way ransomware. Windows 10 will at no point require you to pay anything or be blocked from using your PC. Considering that Windows 10 is free for all WIndows 7 and 8 users as long as they get it in the first year, It seems unlikely that many people who are running Minecraft would have to pay to move to Windows 10.

posted a message on Gaming recording software supports DirectX 12

There are no games currently that use DirectX 12. The only thing that I'm aware of that uses it is 3DMark. I don't think DX API level matters for video capture. If a program captures video and audio from DirectX using the DX9 Capture API, it will still get all the same information (Video, Audio) from a DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 game.

Your problem sounds far more likely to be caused by not having an appropriate Graphics Driver installed. Windows 10 likely replaced it during upgrade with a prepackaged version.

Are you certain you copied to code properly? Looks like the sort of error you would get if you used Random.nextInt() without an argument.
I was unable to reproduce anything similar in a test console program.

Giving Microsoft control of your computer because you don't expect them to do anything unwanted with it is almost certainly a bad idea.

A lot of the misunderstandings come from people not understanding that the documents such as EULAs are Legal documents- in the sense that they are drafted primarily by lawyers, even if the text itself is simplified (as Microsoft appears to have done in Windows 10's EULA). The sort of legal stipulations noted as problematic in this case appear all over the place.

but forced automatic updates have always been a horrible idea and that's not going to change.

As you said the balance is delicate. On the one hand, Users ought to have control over the software that will get installed on their systems, if not for Stallman-esque "it's about the fore freedomz" reasons, then simply to at least be able to choose when they will be inconvenienced. On the other hand, you have people who never update their PCs out of ignorance and effectively volunteer themselves as botnets. In the Open Source ecosystem there are the same sorts of issues where the system ought to be updated to include new security fixes and patches; the user having a choice is pretty much a formality- only an idiot Linux user or admin would purposely not install important security fixes.

So it comes down to almost a political/ethical consideration about whether the user should be given the choice. And to me, I think the ramifications of the choice extend to others. If you don't update then your system might be compromised and used in attacks on other systems. While the user in that case is arguably not a party to that attack, they made a conscious choice to not install the security updates that would have prevented it. So it could be argued that while doing so restricts user choice, it is effectively for the "Greater good" as it means that disassembling Windows Patches will no longer yield a massive botnet farm- the current process typically has MS release the security update, then malicious actors will disassemble and examine what the patch changes and figure out what the exploit it fixed was- this could even be an exploit unknown in the wild. At that point, that exploit will work on any unpatched system (as long as it meets any other requisites of course).

Not the lock screen, login screen. Or did the login image change with the lock screen for you? It's really hard to find any information on it because of that mix up.

The lock screen is pretty much the login screen. It looks the same for me when I first turn it on as if I lock it with WinKey+L.

Unless, that is, you mean the background on the screen where you actually type the password (rather than the display that slides away).

From what I can tell that image is part of some system file (Windows.UI.Logon.pri). Yet another instance of stuff not being customizable that really should be. There are already tools to change it, such as the cleverly named "Windows 10 Login Image Changer".

Microsoft's EULA for Windows 10, and their Terms of Service for the online functionality, are easy to read. This is, ironically, the only reason that there are so many blog posts, articles, and Reddit comments that are, in a word, "panicked" about Windows 10.

I read the agreement in it's entirety. I don't like that Update options have been limited. Ads have been in store apps for a while but I've not seen them show up anywhere. The "privacy" issues noted on many sites disregard the context of what they quote, which only pertains to the online services such as OneDrive.

While the changes to Windows Update's options means that "MS can disable programs they see fit to, simply because they do not like what it does", "Can" and "Will" are two different words with very different meanings. Considering Windows Update has been around since at least Windows 98 and there have been zero instances where this sort of thing has happened, it seems questionable to think that the change to the update options has in any way change the probability that they would do that. Even if we presume Microsoft was to have no business/consumer ethics, they would still be damaging themselves by doing so, as it would take no less then a week for such an "Update" to be discovered.

While the "Exchange Wi-Fi network Access with my Contacts" option is enabled by default, it does nothing unless the user explicitly chooses to enable. The setting is a "higher-level" setting controlling whether you are given the option to share the Wi-fi connection information when you create a new connection. In an upgraded install no existing Wifi connections or their information are shared with anybody- you have to change the connection properties and enable the feature manually. When creating a new connection and the option is on, you are given an additional prompt regarding whether you want to share the connection information.

Any concerns over wifi sense are unfounded as the feature requires as much conscious decision-making as somebody sharing wifi details in person or via instant messaging or something similar.

Bitlocker backing up recovery keys via OneDrive can be prevented by using the Pro version or not using a Microsoft Account on the system. It is nonetheless more accessible than TrueCrypt, and TrueCrypt is already known to be politically compromised. I'm not sure which is the better option. Old versions of Truecrypt, I suppose.

Advertising IDs/Ad IDs is a feature that is enabled by default (as I recall). It can be disabled, and also during setup (or upgrade) it is part of a number of options you are forced to peruse. This is a stark contrast to most installers, which would typically hide the options behind a "Custom Install" option. In the case of Windows 10, during upgrade/install it forces you to make a decision on several dozen options.

You need to install the graphics card driver for your display card. The built-in Windows drivers cover pretty much everything however none of the built-in Windows drivers include features like OpenGL support. It also looks like you may have set the launcher to "compatibility mode" for Windows 8, though I doubt that will affect anything.

I love the way that the MInecraft launcher crash report states that I've still got Windows 7. LOL Good going MS.

When I force crash on my Windows 10 systems it lists the OS as "Windows 10 (amd64) version 10.0". Your javaw or Minecraft launcher is set to Windows 7 compatibility mode it sounds like.

One of the systems in question uses a 9800GT, and I've not seen it have any problems. Driver version 341.74.

You don't need "Windows 10 Drivers" for your devices. Windows 8/8.1 drivers, and even Windows Vista and Windows 7 Drivers, will also work.

Mine is a background image. I didn't change anything, though. It is using the same login image that I have set on Windows 8.1, likely synced. Seems to be set in Settings->Personalization and Themes->Lock Screen

Colored Title Bars? Yeah that's not possible. I remember in older versions of windows you were able to change that. I did hear about Microsoft adding patches (The forced updates) that will enable certain functions in the future.

It is possible, you can modify the theme files manually.

There's also this Third Party Application made by some guy on Reddit that Disables the ability for Microsoft to access telemetry on your system.

Or you can just disable them in settings. I wasn't able to find that "Third Party Application" All I found was results where a bunch of morons talked about things they didn't understand, which is arguably Reddit in a nutshell.
