A giant 500GB file has a higher chance of being corrupted than 125 4GB files.

Not really. Files don't magically "corrupt". Files typically get corrupted because of software problems. Normally, the file not being closed properly, or the system being shutoff before all Cache buffers are flushed, or when two applications are able to write to a file at the same time (possible if they open it with Write Sharing).

If the hard disk itself actually reports something like a CRC or Data parity error the disk itself is probably failing. ECC on the disk and the logic on the logic board is usually moer than enough to correct errors. Most people think data is written directly to the disk; it's actually passed through a rather complex Error Correcting code that adds all sorts of parity information. If A hard disk actually reports an error on a file or folder it's already exhausted innumerable Error corrections. Usually such an error is prompt followed by the disk being unmounted. Or hte system hanging.

    Quote from SeaWry

I see not a Microsoft certification on the bottom of the page, therefore no affiliation with it.

It's listed on Microsoft.com. It's also on the official facebook page of Visual Studio 2012 as well as being listed on several MSDN blogger posts, including this one. Since the site claims to belong to Microsoft through the who-is domain registration, and since none of the Microsoft bloggers and technical writers are saying "this is a fraud and not done by us" it must be created by Microsoft.

I care not what is said otherwise

It's linked on official Microsoft pages, It's part of the Microsoft Press package. It's also listed DIRECTLY in a Microsoft Blog post.

It’s happening so often now that we decided to put up a small Tumblr to help others see how IE9 is fueling IE’s comeback, poke a little fun at ourselves, and encourage those that haven’t checked us out recently to “add” an IE9 pinned site to their Windows 7 taskbar. You can check out the site for yourself at www.browseryoulovedtohate.com.

for now this is a absolute "owner-less" page.

Right, Microsoft just decided to totally pretend it was theirs, and they were totally cool with some ownerless page on the internet being registered as belong to Microsoft.com and listing phone numbers of the same technical contacts that are listed for the Microsoft.com whois.

Also regardless of who the domain name is registered in.

Fake DNS records are one thing. But the site is also listed in official Microsoft Media, such as the blog post I note.

I just find that tumblr amusing and yet pointless as it is all down to personal opinions and choices.

The URL itself makes a point. People Love to hate IE. Half the people that deride it are talking out their ass, though. How many Image Macro's are there, where some psuedo-intellectual hipster doofus thinks they are oh-so-smart because they doodle a few application icons and give the IE icon a dunce cap. No explanation necessary, because "everybody knows" that Internet Explorer is terrible.

Thing is, the only people that "know" that are the ignorant people whose understanding of IE hasn't gone beyond IE6. It's that ignorance that the other browsers have been feeding off of pretty much since.

I recorded for nearly 2 hours once. The file size was almost 300GB.

The file it creates is uncompressed because recording and compressing it on the fly isn't really possible. If you want to upload it or use it for something you will have to use VirtualDub or another Video Editor to apply a compression codec.

It shows the metro IE, at least in the video I saw.

Metro UI: Noun. Something that doesn't exist and hasn't existed since Early Windows 8 Beta's.

This is a tumblr blog. Which is kinda pointless because anyone could made that.

Something else we can conclude you find pointless is basic research.

It has one job, and one job only, to allow a user to download another 3rd party browser to use.

Other browsers do very little that really justifies the extensive waterboarding that it seems to get. IE6 Versus Firefox was obviously no-contest but so far Firefox and the other browsers are basically still trying to run off that initial jumping off point. Thing is they are starting to run on Empty and Microsoft has actually started to commit to IE again. IE6 stagnated because there simply was no business reason to continue to invest in improvements. Netscape, POS software that it was and always had been died a horrible death so there wasn't any reason to continue updating the browser beyond that. After a few years and particularly after the 18 year old Blake was able to fix the absolute garbage and incompetently written code that was in the originally Open Sources codebase Firebird and then Firefox was born. once it started ot pick up steam you notice the release of IE7. That's because MS actually had competition. Ironically due to some of the clauses in the Anti-trust settlements they had from the 90's they weren't allowed to improve or update IE without competition anyway.

So IE6 < third party browsers. Maybe even IE7, though IE7 is certainly a massive improvement. IE8 and IE9, and particularly IE10, really don't have any disadvantages compared to other browsers anymore.

I do recall recently a friend favourited/shared a facebook link from avast. It was an image saying "Internet Explorer 9" with text saying there is a "zero-day flaw" that "All Internet Explorer users are vulnerable to". It then suggested using Google Chrome. Now, This is coming from Avast. Avast is partnered with Google, they install Google Chrome with their AV installations. They are partnered with them. Also I can find absolutely no other information anywhere about it; the facebook page for Avast! is the absolutely only place on the entire internet that seems to mention it. Guess who controls the facebook page of most Companies? the public representatives and marketing folks. Not buying it. The only reason IE is still slieghted so frequently is people believe these AV and Malware companies without question. They read facebook posts like that one and dismiss IE as clearly being full of holes despite the fact that the source, on further investigation clearly has a very strong bias to begin with.

I challenge anybody to come up with some substantial issue in IE9 or later that would actually warrant using a separate browser. And that is before you take into account Chrome's internal spyware sending "usage information" back to Google without consent or Firefox being written in C++ using a Garbage collector that causes it to leak memory.

The only thing people can really point to is that 'well, Internet Explorer simply copied Firefox with Tabs!' Editpad Lite had tabs in the late 90's but you don't see JGSoft trying to say they were their idea. Heck most applications written by Microsoft had started switching to a tabbed document form; Take Excel Worksheets for example. It wasn't something revolutionary, it was just an interesting way to completely violate every single usability principle of Tabs and somehow come up with something usable.

It's a Microsoft page, which I think was created starting with IE8.

It's part of their Internet Explorer Press kit, or it is provided as a link to it.

    Quote from EvilCreeper10

If it was a Microsoft page they'd use the Metro design language

Their main landing page doesn't use it, in fact the portions of the site that do (MSDN, MVP Award site, and some of the win8 related content) comprise a minority. And even where it is used, it's often used in conjunction with other elements. The only thing that seems to use the Microsoft Design Language extensively is outlook.com.

I think a better way to determine if a site belongs to Microsoft is to look at the registrant information. Shpaget has helpfully provided it. Sure the contact information and phone numbers, and the mentions of Microsoft.com as the registrant could be faked. But not the nameservers, which all point to Microsoft NameServers.

I really do love how many are saying "nope, not real" without simply searching. Searching on Microsoft.com for it get's [url=http://www.bing.com/search?q=browseryoulovedtohate site:http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/news/&FORM=BMMENO
    ]tons of results

(Google only get's three results to the Channel9 and answers forums, for some reason)

This thread is going to need a rule about what application you see a dialog in.

The one above is NOT a standard Windows Dialog. I'd guess it's a dialog in a Windows 3.1 Application.

Regarding Avast: They have a partnership with Google and as a result will try to push you to use Chrome. Their currently has a wall post that claims IE is vulnerabile to zero-day exploit, and they "helpfully" recommend Chrome. What they fail to mention is that Every browser has unknown exploits, an exploit in IE9, even if it exists, doesn't affect IE10, and also their facebook post is the absolutely only thing on the entire internet about this that I could find. The partnership is the big one. How can you trust them to make an unbiassed recommendation when they are in a paid parnership with Google to actually bundle Chrome with their product?

SHBrowseForFolder. I notice you chose a usage of the dialog by an application that removes the "new Folder" button as well as not displaying the textbox for keyboard entry.

Since the dumb "Add New fonts" dialog was removed Starting with Win7 (it had looked the exact same since 3.1) I can't think of anything that is still present.

posted a message on 13w38a Snapshot; MIPMapping, Anisotropic filtering and FSAA
    Quote from KaosC57

Mipmapping is the procedure that allows blocks to have actual depth, an example of this is Sonic Ether's Unbeliveable Shaders, that mod with certain texture packs allows for blocks, items and even people to have texture depth, it's a pseudo 3D effect and makes for Minecraft looking a lot better. Though it does have the downside of costing quite a bit of computer resources. if poorly optimised

Not even close. That is bump mapping and Normal mapping.

Mip mapping is simply LOD textures. That's it. With the default textures it is useless.

With 512x512 Textures, you don't need the full 512x512 texture bitmap to draw a cube that is hundreds of blocks away. That's a massive overhead of texels that will never be used. Mipmapping makes it so textures used at a farther distance will use a reduced-size texture.

    Some facts:

It simply won't be used with default textures. There is no reason to do so.

Advantages of Mip-mapping will be solely for high-resolution texture packs. This should help resolve some of the performance issues they have with resource packs, which are a result of the GPU pipeline being asked to process a 512x512 texture for practically every single face in the entire world being rendered- whether you are looking at it from a block away or looking at it through the nether fog on the edge of your view distance, he entire texture is currently processed by the Texture pipeline and Texels are discarded- basically wasted processing. With mip-mapping smaller textures will be used meaning faster texture processing; and since you generally see "more" farther away than you do closer to yourself this should have a very positive performance impact for high-resolution texture packs.

Anisotropic filtering and Anti-aliassing should help reduce moire effects.

How many people complaining about oceans have actually crossed one in the snapshot? I gave up after about 6000 blocks or so.

I'm all for some attempt at realism, but there comes a time when you need to trade in that "realism" for sanity. want to sit here pressing w for an hour and a half. That is not fun for me. And I challenge anybody to find it "fun".

The best place you can get your internet searches and questions. Google Microsoft is best search provider.

    Relevant.

Pushing another Service though, as an alternative, I don't think is really a whole lot better. However even so, Google's TOS is pretty clear in saying that they will peek at your correspondence, it's just done in legalese. Microsoft's TOS says it won't do that, so at least there is that. If they do than discovering that will constitute a breech of their service terms and presumably a suit could be filed against them. But because of that I would personally require more evidence supporting such a claim than cynical assertions of "of course they are".

Even so, one could simply argue that the problem is trust. Take Google.

Why do people trust them? Because those people are stupid, really. Google has managed to paint itself, so far, as a predominantly "good" and altruistic company and therefore people will assume the best scenario. They have used this to dominate the Internet Search industry and squeeze out competitors to their fledgling services by blacklisting major competitors from appearing in their search results. And people still trust them. People are quick to jump to Google's defense- "I'm sure it was a misunderstanding". We are NOT Google's customers. We are their Product. People to advertise to and collect and sell information about.

It's actually interesting to watch; Google does something and the majority say how awesome it is. Another company does something and people quickly dismiss it as a self-interested corporation, Somehow blind to the fact that Google is at least as big if not bigger than those companies.
