Ah you're right, on the side there's a horizontal diagonal gap where the switch is. I hadn't considered it since that gap is only in one spot, and they must jump down immediately afterwards, putting them in the space underneath the glass wall. Thanks for running the tests to figure it out so quickly; I'm glad the slimes aren't meant to be that hardcore :P

Is it intentional for the smallest slimes to be able to glitch through walls? Well, it's specifically magma cubes in question; I assume the update applies to them, as they haven't done this before. I'm now seeing them make their way into a completely sealed area. They are standing on hoppers when they do it, and the spot they are glitching through is setup like this (side view):

    MG

    H--

    M = Magma Cube

    H = Hopper

    G = Glass

    -- = Empty space

The glass goes all the way up, no holes, and this had never happened before the update. Even if they could jump infinity blocks high now, there'd be no way for them to enter this sealed area.

If it's intentional for them to be able to push their way through diagonal spaces, or glass walls, or whatever it is that's letting them get into there, then I guess I'll have to do a major overhaul on my Nether base. Or abandon it entirely and start somewhere else, which would almost definitely be faster and easier if it's glass walls that are ineffective against them.

In the meantime, I'm just going to keep murdering them as they manage to infiltrate my base.

Apparently it's called "combat logging" and it's a big deal on vanilla PvP or hardcore servers. It seems that the only way that vanilla servers have been able to prevent abuse is by using plugins, but I can't speak for the quality of their solutions.

I know it's unlikely to be the case, but do you know if there might be such plugins that would be compatible with BTW?

I have a confession to make, we have been abusing the disconnect button to get us out of trouble. When we respawn in the middle of nowhere during nighttime, we disconnect, but that at least is fair because BTW adds a feature in single-player to auto progress to day in that situation. But other times we use it like a bed. Getting attacked by zombies and spiders outside when trying to get back to shelter? Disconnect for 10 minutes and then come back to see them burn and go passive. Need to idle the night while indoors without losing hunger or risking a monster coming? Disconnect. Zombie banging on the door? Disconnect and reconnect to make it stop again, although yesterday as I was going back through a tunnel I was digging, a zombie broke my door just as I got close enough to hear it and it killed me anyway. Stuck outside during a new moon? Disconnect! I know it's cheesy but it's hard for me to break the habit because it's saved my stuff more than once. Unfortunately I don't think it's possible for the game to discourage this behavior because it's fundamental that players shouldn't be able to be killed while they can't be on a server.

Players on the server I play on have been abusing the hell out of this. I've witnessed various instances of this, like "player gets a squid attached to them, then they disconnect and reconnect when it's daytime, and the squid is no longer attached so they are able to swim away safely", and "a jungle spider is trying to attack them, so they disconnect, then reconnect and move 2 feet, then disconnect, etc, until they've managed to get away from the spider", and the list of exploits goes on.

While one person has been removed from the server because their abuse was extremely flagrant and the admin was present at the time, the fact is that there's no way to track this and no way to prevent it. Unless they're being really stupid about it, it's not behavior that can be punished or even detected.

If anyone has the knowledge to create a BTW-compatible mod that can keep players' characters in-game for X seconds after they disconnect (and keep their chunk loaded during that time so whatever's there has a chance to kill them; even just 10 seconds might be long enough), I'm 100% positive my server's admin would implement it in a heartbeat. I imagine there's some technological limitation here, but in a perfect world people who were faced with certain death would not be able to escape it by disconnecting :P

Isn't it a bit silly to assume that I won't know the content of a mod before I play it?

No. The only thing silly here is assuming you're some kind of authority on a mod you've never tried. Feeling the need to post in a mod's thread to let everyone know you haven't played the mod is also pretty silly. This isn't something normal people do.

Quote from Feylias » Install was tricky, so here are install directions for those who are as clumsy as I was:

Make a new profile, set to 1.5.2, and name it something like "Better Than Wolves". Load a world in it to download the .jar, then exit and delete that world.
Enter the Versions folder in your Minecraft directory, and rename the 1.5.2 folder to 1.5.2_BTW. Enter that folder.
    Rename 1.5.2.jar to 1.5.2_BTW.jar
    Rename 1.5.2.json to 1.5.2_BTW.json
Edit 1.5.2_BTW.json and replace "id":"1.5.2" with "id":"1.5.2._BTW" and save the file.

    Now
Open your 1.5.2_BTW.jar file with an unzipping/decompression tool (I used 7zip)
copy the files from the BTW archive (you downloaded it already, right?) into the 1.5.2_BTW.jar
    (Overwriting some)
    delete the META-INF folder

Now change the "Better Than Wolves" profile so it's selecting "release 1.5.2_BTW", save that, and you're good to go.

Don't accidentally load your BTW worlds in any other release; it'll screw 'em ALL up.

    Lol.

Well, the method I've found to be the easiest:

    1) Download MultiMC.
    2) Create a new 1.5.2 instance.
    3) Add the BTW jar.zip file under "jar mods".

    And you're done.

To create the jar.zip file, just copy the contents of "MINECRAFT-JAR" (in the BTW download) into a new zip file.

On a side note, I kind of wish one of the other dimensions would allow the wolves to not go insane and starve to death :P I'd take all my wolves to the Nether or The End if it'd guarantee no stupid accidents as long as they stay in there xD

I guess to some extent, that sort of already works, since the chunks will remain unloaded while you're not there. But that gives more reason to not go to other dimensions, when I'd rather have a reason to take my wolves there and then still go there myself, even if those poor bastards can't come back out lol.

Well, for Nether wolves, they can never really come back out anyways, since they become walking nether-exposure-leakers :P

    No no no, absolutely not!

Those horror landscapes were very much by design. This is just a bit of polish on what was already there :)

Ah, awesome! It looks really good in-game :D

Some of my friends decided to run a server, so I mentioned BTW and now they're trying it out. The chat logs are a source of constant entertainment :P They're enjoying a lot of the changes to gameplay, like how much more valuable early resources are.

    -Added Hardcore Hunger for Wolves.

    -Added Hardcore Hoofsies.

Uh oh. Anything that sounds like "hatsies" just makes me shiver.

And I wonder if this means tamed wolves are going to starve to death, or if they're going to go hostile? Or both? :o I'll try not to find out the hard way.

-Changed the brightness of the changes I made to Hardcore of Darkness recently so that when Gloom isn't present, the overall brightness of the game should be much closer to what it is in vanilla (especially underground). In other words, things should appear a bit brighter in general now than they did in the past couple of releases, and the transition from normal lighting into Gloom, a bit more dramatic.

Aw, does that mean there's no more scary horror-tier landscapes on those partially-lit nights? :P First time the sun set, I reflexively entombed myself with several torches, in a forest near my base where I normally wouldn't have lol.

I guess I'll find out as soon as the download finishes :D Thanks for the release!

Or maybe the right approach is to simply not dedicate yourself to making snide entitled remarks about someone just because they won't drop to their knees to suck you off.

The only person acting upset that they aren't being worshiped is you. He didn't seek you out and ask for special treatment from you. You're the one who chose to seek him out, make unsolicited demands of him, and then berate him for not giving you special treatment. Pretty narcissistic.

Probably something to do with the whole "you're not developing your mod the right way" thing.

I disagree. Only the content creator has any rights to their work, including the specifics of its distribution. This content creator has determined that only the newest version will be available to download, which is the norm for all games, and most programs in general. I assume that, if he were to ever make the downloads available again, some smugly entitled individual will immediately download every version for redistribution purposes.

As for your stated problem: You haven't actually offered any useful information regarding your position. You made some attempt at an emotional appeal, rather than a logical one, and as a result your post was devoid of any actual support or potential feedback. You could have made the same post regarding any game or mod; there was nothing meaningful stated.

Here are some statements you should be giving specific examples of, rather than generalizing them to the point of triviality:

    • "Recent updates have led this mod in the wrong direction"
    • "Recently, the hardcore updates have made my family & friends unable to understand what to do"
    • "I cannot play it in a casual setting, like with friends"
The first statement is entirely subjective, but you could still at least try to provide support for it. I'll disagree with that though, based on the fact the direction the mod is heading in is the one that was always being headed in, and which was always intended.

The second and third statements are more objective, and that's what I find strange: I've had no issues introducing the mod to new players, even those who have no experience with MC (especially them, actually). People who have neither played MC nor play many games in general; it doesn't get much more casual than that.

Given that my experiences contradict what I'm reading in your post, your lack of specific examples (ie, specific updates, how those updates specifically affected your playing experience, etc) leaves me wondering exactly what you're talking about.

The upgrade to Hardcore Darkness is simply amazing. I was really caught off-guard :) It was a beautiful death. I regret nothing, except perhaps that I can't experience it more often :P
