I've been thinking about earlier versions of Minecraft for a while.
I've known for a while that I prefer grass and leaves pre-1.8, and cobblestone pre-whenever-they-changed-it.
I also have had a distaste for Creative mode for a while (although I do like it for those bits of whimsy that could normally only be helped with mods, like trying to shoot an Iron Golem from a cannon).
Yesterday, I rewatched the first episode of the Yogcast's Minecraft series.
I realized just how much better the landscape looked than the one in my 1.2.5 world (recently updated to 1.3.1).
I also remembered the impressive ocean cliffs that I built my house on during my old Alpha game (I started on an "unofficial" copy, while having no idea what the current version was).
I decided to downgrade my Minecraft to 1.7.3 (chosen because I would still have pistons, beds, clay, etc. and it was the earliest I had officially played).
I used MCDowngrader for the job, backing up my .jar and saves (1.3.1 still has plenty of great features, such as being better for Multiplayer).
I created a new world using the "Glacier" seed (chosen off a list of notable seeds more or less randomly).
Here are my thoughts:
Wow, monsters are scary.
It doesn't help that everything looks so much darker without the familiar Brightness bar.
Damage is much more permanent without the hunger bar, and my armor is hardly any protection.
Skeletons' arrows move slower, less accurately, and perhaps at shorter range, but they have a VERY high rate of fire relative to 1.8.
Monsters spawn so frequently that, even on Normal, I can literally look out my front door and see five creepers in the yard.
They don't even drop consistently- I can kill like three spiders and only get a single string.
Creepers explode really easily, and really dangerously.
I have to move my bed partway down into my mine, because I made my house under a hill and haven't lit up the hill yet- I tried to sleep 5-7 times (excuse me for not remembering exactly) and each time a skeleton or zombie appeared.
I don't know how I survived, but it probably helped that I lay down holding my sword.
I love that I can get feathers from zombies!
I had tons of rotten flesh in my old world and nothing to do with it.
I had a huge feather shortage in my old world because I didn't want to spend all my time farming, the chickens grow up slowly, and I didn't even have any chickens until I'd already gotten full diamond armor because NONE SPAWNED ANYWHERE NEARBY.
Now, I don't have to farm.
I can walk away from my house to plant a mushroom, and come back to find pigs where there were no pigs.
Are mushrooms spreading faster, or is that my imagination?
It's really nice that other animals don't drop meat anymore.
The pigs have their own niche again, and I don't have to take time to cook all the raw chickens that I don't collect while I'm out getting feathers!
Speaking of food, it's nice that I don't have to take four fish with me each time I go mining just to keep from starving.
This world looks really nice.
The mountains I'm now used to hardly have any trees on them at all, and don't look nearly as impressive.
Ooh, gravel beach.
The grass looks nice.
The trees look really nice, especially since they don't appear chiefly in incredibly thick forests that are impossible to see through and hard to move through.
Does this gravel have the same texture I remember?
No.
I'd like to point out that yes, if I just wanted nicer landscapes, I could have just downloaded Better World Generation for 1.3.1. I did, and I love it, and I'm keeping it on my 1.3.1 .jar. It has settings for Beta and Alpha style worlds and even changes the textures to match, without changing the game itself.

Strottinglemon posted a message on Is it just me...Notch willingly gave the game to Jeb because he was becoming uninspired. I invite you to work on the same thing for 2+ years. It gets EXTREMELY boring and your motivation goes to hell. The exact same thing would have happened if Notch stayed. Plus, not all these features are useless. Actually none of them are. Even though I personally don't use trading in game that often, villager trading opens up possibilities for me in adventure maps by modifying the game files to edit what they sell. Tripwires can be placed above the water to detect boats. Writable books are a great feature that's been asked for for years. Adventure mode is a WIP, Jeb will be adding MANY more features later, like the command block. You see, just because YOU personally don't see the point to something doesn't mean Minecraft is on a downward spiral. Sometimes you have to think outside the blocks. Debugman18 posted a message on Since many people have taken to complaining, I'm going to say thanks to Mojang.I frequent these forums. I visit and post daily, and I've noticed something that is disturbing. No, it doesn't surprise me. But it bothers me.Posted in: Discussion
So many people here post without fully understanding the actual game-making process. They post thread after thread, complaining because the game is not up to par with their standards. I see complaint thread after complaint thread, and very rarely do I ever see anyone come out and say they appreciate what Mojang has done for the gaming world. And those that do, are labeled as 'biased fanboys who always take Mojang's side because they're kiss-ups'.
I made this thread first and foremostly, to say thank you to Mojang for creating, and maintaining, the awesome game known as Minecraft. For roughly $20, we have gotten a game that we can play online continually for free, that we get updates often for free, we get preview builds of future updates every week, sometimes twice a week.
Thank you Mojang.
Now, on to a few points, targeted at those players who insist on complaining about nearly every aspect of the game.
* Pirates. When I first started playing Minecraft, it was in beta 1.2. I got a cracked copy, and played on it, and on a classic server I was admin on. As soon as I had the funds, I bought the game. Then, I bought a gift code for a friend, because I wanted more people to play. One thing that I have to say about pirates is this: If you haven't bought the game yet, don't complain about it. Buy the game, then you have a right to complain about a product that you have purchased.
*Consider this scenario: A small team of say, a dozen people, are building a truck from scratch. They've got the truck built, but they haven't worked out all the kinks yet. It's drivable, but it has a few issues, let's say it drives slower than it could, and it isn't always a smooth ride. Somebody buys the truck, knowing fully well that the truck is not a finished product. They then go back to the creators, and complain that the product they have received is not up to par. That's absurd. The product is unfinished, and the customer knows this, yet the customer complains anyways. Now let's assume the customer also says that the creators should add say, a ridiculously loud muffler to the truck. Let's also assume the customer knows nothing about truck-building, but acts like it anyway. This is also absurd. If somebody is a professional, doing something for a living, don't assume you know better than they do. They do it for a living, it's almost certain they are not only skilled and experienced, but they also have their own plans for the product. It's absurd to say that because you put a small amount of money into the product, it should be designed solely to your standards, when in fact, it's designed for a large variety of people. It's beneficial to please the majority rather than the minority. Let's now assume that every so often, the creators of the truck give you a free oil change, upgrade some parts, work out a few kinks, and also give you a completely new set of tires. At no extra charge. And the customer complains that they think they don't want the tires and the parts, that they suck, and that they want even better tires and parts, still at no charge. That is also absurd. Now let's say the customer takes the truck, and drives it off-road for a while, even though the truck is not only still a work-in-progress, but not designed for off-road driving. The customer goes to the creators, and complains that the truck did not perform well off-road. This is also absurd.
*Now let's take a good long look at Minecraft as a whole:
It has only recently reached version 1.0. It is not yet a finished product, however. There are bugs, and there are some issues. Anything before 1.0 should not be subject to complaints, as it was not finished, and the customer knows this. The same goes for snapshots. It's fine and well to point out bugs and issues, but don't complain about them. They are works-in-progress. Don't complain about the game because your computer sucks. The game is not designed for decade-old single-core computers. If you're running on a single-core, don't expect to game. It isn't designed for games. Games aren't designed for it. Your single-core processor has been outdated for a decade. It's cheap and easy to upgrade, and if you don't have a dual-core processor by now, you are simply lazy. And you cannot say that you cannot afford to upgrade. If you can afford the internet to visit these forums, and can afford Minecraft, then there is no reason you cannot afford to update your crappy processor.
The game as a whole, including lifetime updates, free online multiplayer, support for modders, no DRM, unlimited downloads from multiple computers, offline mode if you've signed in even once, so your friends can play single player just for you signing in a single time, preview versions before any update is released, and all of this for roughly $20. I dare anybody here to name a single game that can compete with those perks.
The offline/online code merge. This is only the FIRST step towards the mod api. It is not finished. It won't be finished for quite some time. It's all well and good to report bugs and issues, but constantly complaining about it is absurd. The merge was also made so that the developers don't have to update both offline/online code seperately. This not only makes it easier for the modders to do their thing, but it also makes it easier for the developers to add new content and fix bugs. Also, redundancy in code is bad and unnecessary. There is no reason that the developers shouldn't be allowed to do this, as it is their game, and they aren't required in any way, shape, or form, to continue updating and improving the game.
People who suggest that things NEED or SHOULD be added to the game. Suggest things, because the developers don't have to do a single thing for anybody here. They do it because they love the community, and because they want to stand out in the gaming world. They made it, they can do whatever they damn well please with the game.
They do not push a button to add new content. They have to code it. It isn't easy. It isn't simple. It requires work and effort, and even more so to find and squash bugs. A good majority of the people who frequent these forums have no knowledge of java whatsoever, nevertheless the ability to write an entire game in Java.
It's not finished. There's a lot that Mojang has planned for the game, and it isn't going to happen overnight.
Anyways, that's my rant. I could've gone on and on, but I figured that I said what needed to be said.
Don't even think of posting here unless you either
A. Read the entire post or B. Have good, solid, points or C. Both of the previous.
Again, THANK YOU MOJANG, FOR A WONDERFUL GAME. Keep up the fantastic work! -

Staonopao posted a message on Why is everyone trying to make Minecraft "Realistic?"Really? You honestly don't understand how other people can have a different perspective than you on what's fun and entertaining?Posted in: Discussion
Okay, let me try to explain .
Some people want a simplistic game. Others want it more realistic. Personally, I like realistic features for the feeling of depth, challenge, immersion, and achievement that they give me. To me, Minecraft became far more enjoyable when I got the full version and had to eat regularly to stay alive all of a sudden. I would have played with the Finite Liquid mod enabled had my laptop been strong enough, because realitic water is a) far more immersive, and far more challenging than Minecraft's water. Every time I make bread, I find it silly that you eat it raw and don't have to put it in an oven first (though I realize this is probably due to the fact that the process of farming involves enough steps as it does, from crafting the hoe and gathering seeds to "forging" the bread). I, personally (note how I realize this is only my perspective) would love to see more "sim" features like temperature, freezing, wet clothing, and so on, making it a challenge to say, traverse a cold biome as you couldn't simply swim through the icy waters without penalty. I could go on and on.
What I personally do not understand --at all-- is the widespread hostility to realistic features. Some people like "arcade" gameplay, while others like "realistic" gameplay, but there are those who seem to have declared it a Truth that the realistic approach is inferior to the arcade-approach, period. It's like the very term "realistic" has become a kind of insult or slur towards a feature. As I said in the beginning, is it really that difficult to understand that others might enjoy what you find unfun, and vice-versa?
Except originally it wasn't a survival game. You didn't have to eat to stay alive, for one thing, and i'm not sure if there even were monsters or resource gathering in the first releases. Notch has said that he likes to release early and often, and the game has evolved from early alpha to what we see today through a series of many, many, many releases and much trial-and-error. Trade is another new feature that has great potential, and which may push the game in a different direction, with more of a focus on AIs interacting with the player and each others, Dwarf Fortress-style (trade routes, sieges, migration, expansion of cities, warfare, etc.).I think these people have forgotten that this is a sandbox-survival video game. It is not supposed to be realistic.
To say Minecraft is "supposed to be" anything is a bit disingenious. In my eyes, the only thing it's "supposed to be" is a LEGO-reminiscent block-based RPG where you can break apart and place blocks. Then it's evolved from there, and god, must it have been an exciting ride for those lucky enough to have followed it from the beginning. -

Cave_Johnson posted a message on Minecraft chick?Posted in: DiscussionQuote from Mclinsky
I know a few girls that can destroy me in SSMB, that are attractive... Your theory is not completely false, it's just the majority that is like what you said. The occasional ones can be quite the looker.
I said nothing about looks...
I said HABITS ARE NASTY...
You could look really nice and attractive, BUT sit in one spot and live in a place with garbage piled up... perhaps even stink.... looks are a very small factor really, ask any married man.
That's the problem with trying to explain women to young guys...
All you care about is looks, and if their attitude is tolerable...
There are more than meets the eye.
-Habits and Hygiene
-Possession
-Their Self-Esteem (VERY IMPORTANT: too low they smother you, too high they dominate you)
-Values and goals
-Background/Family (If you marry them, you are actually attaching their family to your own.)
-Maturity Level, and emotional Level compared to your own.
If you are not sure what I mean with all this, I can explain if you message me. No need to derail this thread further.
But you guys wouldn't understand that right now,
most are looking for a pretty face to talk to... recipe for disaster... -

I hope the majority of the people get some of their hard work transferred, as it was pleasant to see from my screen.
I hope this clean slate could come in handy though, and not drive our community away. This can give us a chance to build a spawn/main town together, this could bring us together even more(our bond is already strong).
I hope with the final decision we do not lose anyone, as it has been a pleasure thus far playing with each and every one of you.
To those wanting to join this wonderful server, do not hesitate... You will be pleased I'm sure.
Cheers,

I've played in various servers on the forum, and this by far has been my favorite. It's so simple that it makes it so amazing.
If you're looking for a basic server, with a nice community to just play the game, I'd recommend this server to anyone. Staff interact with the community which is nice for a change. I wish I could donate to the server...

I agree with this statement. I've never judged people for looks. Everyone is beautiful in their own way. Keep preaching.

I'm not saying you need to like her, just saying you shouldn't be insulting as well.
PS: What you don't like, others may like.

If I purchase another copy, for whatever reason this weekend, I wouldn't mind giving you the code. Don't get your hopes up though.

u fergot da period in da end of da sentence. "Grammar Nazi". :wink.gif:
Ontopic: You're taking his thread a whole different course. He simply said, why do young kids try to get into servers that require you to be 18 years of age and older by lying about your age. Then simply act as if you were not the age you stated to be. Also, he didn't point any fingers. He simply stated his opinion in general. There's no need to prove to him 14 year olds can be mature, I'm sure he is aware of it. He didn't exactly point a finger at you and said, "you there, you're immature."
