I have run a very small server to host two of my friends on my 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro with 4GB of memory and it works fine. The upside to hosting a server on the computer you're playing on is the quick turnaround time for any issues that arise.
I'm currently in the planning stages for an Adventure map, and I have heard about people incorporating Video into their custom adventures to aid in storytelling (via Youtube/Vimeo/etc). Does anyone know of a good example of this technique in use? I would love to consider doing this on my own map.
Hi folks! It's really late, and I'm sleepy, but I made some progress on a new town I planned out. I would like to post my progress on the forum to share with everyone in the community, get some feedback, and perhaps inspire other people to start their own projects.
The one thing I would like to mention was the use of my new toy in the planning stages of the town - an iPad paired with the app called "C64 Paint" - a pixel art app that emulates the kind of graphics available on the old C64 computer. This tool helped me create an overhead map of the town in about 15 minutes and continue to tweak it easily. Here's the final map I've come up with for the southeast quadrant of the town, phase 1 of the build project:
This chunk of the town will include a cathedral, library, and a clock tower as the main focal points. With this information established, it's time to get building! I'll try to keep my progress updated after each day of building.
Day 1
The outer wall, concrete pathway, canal, bridge, and a few foundations have been built - the basics. Once I have the foundations finished, I'll work on a multi-level plaza. Then it'll be time for the buildings!
Day 2
The ground is complete! I also built the library (octagon-shaped building), and three shop buildings. The interiors are mostly complete, and I'll post some pictures of those when they're finished.
I made my own texture pack for this town which I'm tweaking as I go. Here's the texture I made for glowstone which works well for lanterns and shaded building windows:
Yes, let's slow the progress of a game in beta. Before 1.6, the last update was over a month ago. The numerous patches we've had in the past two days are bug fixes which eliminate undesirable functionality of Minecraft. Developers should be very much aware that when they create tools to use with another program still in beta, they will need to keep up with numerous updates and patches.
I'm trying to install this mod on my server which I'm running on a Mac (Snow Leopard 10.6.7) and I'm able to extract the .jar file and replace the ly.class file. Then in order to get it back to a .jar file, I compress it back into .zip and change the extension to .jar. When I run the scripts to start the server again, I get the error message
Invalid or corrupt jarfile minecraft_server.jar
I'd really like to get this mod to work, it looks awesome
I like this idea, except for the postbox being made of red wool. Doesn't fit the theme of minecraft, and I'm sure no one here has ever seen a wool postbox. I think it should be made of iron/wood.
Also, if it can be sent across servers, that might cause a problem with Beta Creative server players sending 640 diamond blocks to an SMP server.
I agree with you on the recipe, my goal was to find a material that would make it red. My intention of this topic is to present an idea, so I don't see the necessity to discuss what the actual recipe should be for a feature that doesn't exist yet.
I totally get you with cheating though, that could ruin servers in which economies have been established. In that case, a server property such as "mail trade=false" could be implemented so that trading is disabled, but not mail entirely.
This is a great idea and I support, but how would you handle messages between worlds? Like what if a player has a mailbox in every world, which world would a received message go to?
I would hope that mail would be universally tied to an account, so if a letter is sent to a player, it shows up in all of his/her mailboxes because they are unified. Think about how email works - you have a web client and a desktop client, and new messages appear in both inboxes.

That's where I got some inspiration for the idea, because that mail system does work really well.
