So in the vanilla game, with all graphical settings at maximum, I can easily get 100-130fps. But using any of the mod packs with the Technic Launcher (besides vanilla and Hack/Mine because neither of those work), graphical settings on minimum-medium, I'm struggling to get 20fps. Is there any reason for this, and any way to fix it?
Ever played Civilization? You start with a dude that has nothing and can't do much of anything, you're in ancient times and don't even know what a wheel is. then you research new technology and get so far as lasers and spacecraft. it doesn't seem bad for minecraft to go industrial or even futuristic. minecraft is supposed to be whatever the hell you want it to, that's what mods are for. minecraft isnt really about mining anymore anyway, you can do so much more with it. going industrial and even futuristic should be an option but not a necessity
The thing with Civilization, is you're not a single dude, and a single game takes place over thousands of years.
Beyond a hundred feet or so they were. You have a hand-carved projectile (meaning it won't be very aerodynamic) fired out of a non-rifled, possibly too large tube no more than a foot or so long. That lump of whatever is going to not only drop very quickly, but go in whatever direction it feels like going.
So I've dabbled in texture creation, and up until this point have done exclusively 16x textures. Unfortunately, that feels low even for an original texture pack, and the one I'm doing next would really help to be in high res. How much harder is 32x than 16x, and how do you create the canvas for one? Simply double the size of the default terrain.png?
The problem is, you're comparing Minecraft to real life. I don't think anybody is going to try and argue that something made out of 1x1x1 meter square blocks will rival, say, the Taj Mahal. You have to look at it in terms of what the game is capable of, and what people do with that. I could just as easily say the examples of 'good' architecture you provided in your post are terrible because they aren't built in four dimensions. But that's not exactly fair, because we can't build in four dimensions. It's all relative.

Didn't he say he's handing over full control of Minecraft to Jeb and moving on to other projects?

This is just about the only time I've seen this emoticon make sense.
