Microsoft Security essentials has always been terrible, I would suggest getting AVG free edition, it's one of the best you can get without having to pay.
I disagree. MSE is about as unobtrusive as a AV could possibly be, and after years of computing and gaming, I base 100% of my judgement of an AV program on this sole factor. Quite honestly, I think AV programs are a complete waste of time and the only reason I use one at all is because MSE is so invisible. I've been infected before even tho AVG was running. The fact is... if the virus signature isn't in the AV program's database yet, then it cannot and will not stop it from running. People who use viruses to spread their crap know this fact. So every virus is a new virus, for the most part. AV's wont' stop em immediately, and when they do, the perps will just move on to a new one.
For the average computer user, any AV is fine. Just don't pay for one, that's all. I just talked my mom out of paying Symantec for yet another year's worth of her beloved Norton. The fact I was installing a Microsoft product seemed to put her at ease. PT Barnum effect.

Animal food isn't needed. One can easily grow a garden for more food than anyone could ever need.
So besides food items, we have:
- Cows give leather, which is useless after the first or second day of a new world.
- Chickens give feathers, which may be useful in the first few days of a new world but since I rarely use a bow until I get to The End, arrows aren't really necessary. I get more than enough of them just by killing skeletons.
- Pigs give nothing.
So the only item left is wool, which is useful for decorating. It's not a necessity of course, but it is the most useful animal item to me.
Edit: Yes I did forget you need cow leather to make books now. Hmmm. Since I would rather not live without an enchantment table, maybe I need to reconsider the importance of the cow. Perhaps I'd put it this way - if you find a village and a villager who is trading books, then you don't need cows since you only need two books for a Table I think. If you haven't come across a village, then I guess cows might be more important than sheep solely to make those two books.

Point is, it is always found at the bottom of a staircase, so be sure to always check for ways to move up/down levels in the Fortress cause that's where you will find it.
I did have one instance where lava had flowed down the stairs and destroyed all the netherwart just leaving the garden beds of soul sand that it grows on. So that's possibly what happened to you too. Just gotta keep searching, I used to travel 1000 blocks or more searching for Fortresses in the nether, but I was also on a server that had a "/home" command to make it easy. I've found a lot of fortresses now, just gotta be patient and persistent.

I killed the Dragon the other day too. First time ever!
But I never got a Dragon Egg. What is that? Did I screw up bigtime? sigh
oh i should have read the entire thread. lol So why didn't I get one?
found my answer, it's apparently sitting right on top of the End exit portal? Gotta go look and see.

Absolutely, I took note of that technique, and that's why I was careful to state I wasn't trying to be a jerk with my question. You can learn something from everything. Was just curious if I was missing something about cactus. Fireworks, for one, but I have no need for stuff like that when I play cause its mostly single player. Same with armor dyes. But for multiplayer I now understand there is a value to cactus.
Thanks for sharing!
Understood, but you only need a few pieces for that purpose. I grow three cactii outside my main residence and over time I've collected 4 full stacks just from farming them over and over.

Long story short, the world got corrupted, and the group broke apart. I moved over to PC, since I was frustrated with the small world (its only 864x864 blocks in area, if you can believe it!). So that world is gone now. I actually got an email from the player who "owned" that world on his xbox. He said the world still worked and I should come see how big it has gotten. I guess the bug was fixed by an xbox update.
In that world I built a house out on the ice in a snow village. Below the ice, I built the house in a mirror image, upside down in the water. When you stand near the house, the part below the ice looks just like a reflection of the house on the ice. It wasn't my idea, I had read about it somewhere, probably on these forums. But everybody thought it was just the coolest thing. I also had a living room inside, and a coffee table in front of my television. On the table were two xbox "joysticks", which were actually levers of course. These levers were connected to a secret opening into my basement below (where the "mirror image" below the ice hid it). The pistons were hidden underneath my couch and love seat, and they pulled open the floor to expose the stairs. The two "joysticks" had to be set to one configuration in order for the secret stairs to open up. If somebody flipped one lever to see what happens, it wouldn't open. They had to have both in the right configuration (technically, it was an AND gate).
So that world is gone, but I still have all the good memories. I also made a rail network between my houses which you didn't even have to press any buttons to ride. You just hopped in the cart and it automatically went on its way. At the other end, you just got out of the cart and it was routed around to the departure bay, ready for whenever I wanted to return. Never had to pick up the cart or place it, ever - completely automated minecart stations!
My xbox live gold subscription ran out and I have no reason to renew it. So I can't play online with my old xbox friends anymore. I've never built anything that cool again, even tho PC is so much better than xbox. I just haven't found the same kind of group of friends to build with. Mostly on PC its either very young kids who just want to PvP (lol I just don't get the fun of that at all) or its griefers. The owner of that world built a "spawn prison" so we could check out the people who joined and evaluate if they were trouble-makers and if they were "mature" enough. It was a really cool world, kinda like our version of Mindcrack, always trying to out-do each other with new creations.

You DO make regular backups of your worlds, right? RIGHT?

But within about 10 minutes I changed my mind, got in my boat and kept going. Basically because of what Castarsman just said. There's nothing there worth making a home out of. You're stuck on an island a long ways from anything else. And the island is kind of a target, because other people would probably have the same reaction as I did, they'd stop and explore, then find my house and all the trouble would start (griefing is the norm in my experience when playing on multiplayer servers, not the exception).
I ended up in my usual spot, in a cave in a location nobody would ever care to explore. Much less chance of discovery.

I don't know why that frustrates you. I put one powered rail for my starting point. Then 5 blocks away I put another powered rail. Another rail is placed 10 blocks away, then a final rail is put down 20 blocks from the start. From that point on, I'm at max speed and 1 rail every 35 or so (previous poster said its one rail every 38 sections but I'm slightly conservative with my 35) keeps me there. There's no difference in the ride from using powered rail for the entire route.

I dunno. I have 3 full stacks of iron blocks so that's 27 stacks of iron right there, a single chest full. And most of the normal rails I have used are from abandoned mineshaft salvage operations. To be safe I use 34 normal rails and then one powered rail.
I know what my main problem is... I prefer to travel at elevation 5 in the overworld and elevation 120 or so in the nether (ceiling shuttles). To get down to the bottom or up to the top of the nether I run 1-to-1 slopes and I know I misuse my gold because I just say "the heck with it" (or similar lol) and put a powered rail for every block the whole way up or down. So that uses 60 powered rails each time I do it. Twice for each line I run.
I used the 1:2 slope for the longest time, but I dislike the ride since you constantly bob up and down the whole way. It's annoying. Plus, in the nether, I run my slopes up thru the middle of netherrack mountains, so I don't get shot at by ghasts along the way. I need to run at 1:1 in those situations. That's why I just said forget it and ran 1:1 slopes everywhere. I think it costs 33% more gold rails for 1:1 than a 1:2 slope does, so that's like 20 extra gold rails every time.
What's the best option for a 1:1 slope? Skip every 3rd powered rail or something? That would make it equal gold to a 1:2 slope then. Just a little more work since more torches needed.

I just get kinda bored with branch mining, that's all. I have more diamonds and redstone and coal than I'll ever need, but gold is always short due to rail lines. Plus, I get most of my satisfaction out of Minecraft when I made big automated things. Most aren't original tho, but it's still fun to copy someone's neat design and get it working, perhaps even tweak it a bit to fit my own style and needs.
Thanks all!

we don't know either. lol The first one I found was actually the first time I had seen whatever wood planks (spruce?) the huts are made out of, so I broke it down and carted it all away with me.
i don't think witches do anything except look "cool"... like fireworks.

First of all... does the zombie pigman farm method still work? And second, are there any other options for gold farming?
Obviously I never use creative mode, I like the challenge of doing everything in survival even tho I make frequent world backups.
