    Here is a wall which doesn't allow anything to get in, is easy to construct, uses cheap resources, and can generate mob drops (if your lucky). It uses three cactuses stacked vertically to kill anything touching it, (even spiders) which provides a purpose for cactus farms and sand. (which generally is thrown into pits of lava)
