Hey, awesome mod you've got going here, one question which I don't think has been answered before, but do you plan to integrate pistons into your mod with some sort of functionality? For example, by allowing pistons to push platforms around in a similar way to how pulleys can? Maybe some sort of "super" piston that extends twice as far and can push up to 24 blocks, but requires mechanical power? (Since mechanical power is much harder to manage than redstone, it should be balanced)

Other than that, I've got an idea for an addition to the mod: The Grappling Hook. When you use it it shoots out a projectile (the hook), which when it hits a solid block, it creates an anchor on the surface that it hit, or if it hits the top of a block, then it makes an anchor on one of the sides. Then, it starts adding rope to the anchor, up to 8 or so. If it runs out of space to extend the rope down, it instead just drops a rope item at the bottom for each overflow.

An additional fun thing that could be done, would be to make it so if you throw it at mob, the item isn't used and instead that mob is pulled to you. Or, if you want to get fancy, a rope is created from you to the mob, which prevents the mob from moving more than 8 blocks away from you. Then, if you right-click with the item again, it'll pull the mob in one block at a time. This is probably getting into "difficult to program and not adding all that much to the game" territory but it just sounds like it'd be a lot of fun to drag mobs around and go fishing for squids.

I don't know exactly how it should be constructed, but it should use up a bunch of rope and an anchor at least. Maybe just as simple as a single anchor surrounded by 8 rope segments? And then you could make longer versions by surrounding the grappling hook with another 8 rope.

You could, in theory make that so that the elevator is a huge platform right?

Not a huge platform, but you could make a 2x2 version without too much trouble. Anything larger than that is probably impossible, though.

I actually just finished a working prototype for my own piston design, based on my older, "train" design that went horizontal instead of vertically. As it turns out, it works out pretty well.

...Nothing? I've already gotten some work done with creating a few of the items from Spiral Knights, but I really need help with world generation, and also with all the art for items and new mobs and such.

I'm currently looking for a few people to help me out with a mod inspired by Spiral Knights. For those that haven't played the game or heard about it, it's a game centered around a group of knights stranded on a strange alien planet, which has a huge, ever-changing complex of machinery and such below the surface, going all the way to the core of the planet, called the Clockworks. The player, as one of the knights, has to use "gates", essentially mining elevators, to venture into the depths of the Clockworks to fight monsters, get loot, and eventually work their way to the very core of the world.

    More info on Spiral Knights.

While I don't think porting this over exactly to Minecraft would be worthwhile, or fun, or even possible, I can't help but think that a lot of the basic framework of Spiral Knights and the Clockworks would fit very well into Minecraft as a sort of alternate plane, similar to the Nether. You would have to gather materials, build a Gate, and venture into the Clockworks, pressing deeper, killing monsters, and collecting loot. And of course, since this is Minecraft, there would also be the possibility of building fortresses of your own down there.

Anyways, if anyone is interested, I'm happy to share what I've thought up so far, or if you have any questions feel free to ask here or in a PM. Right now the areas I'll probably need the most help with are:

    1) World building. I've poked around with this a bit, but making something like the clockworks would have to be programmed essentially from scratch, and I simply don't have the know-how to do it. I'll help out as much as I can, but I need at least for someone to help me out with this, or at least where to start with it.

    2) Creating mobs. I could probably figure this out better than World Building, but if someone more experienced could help out, that would be a big help.

    3) Art. There's going to be a lot of art assets that need to be made, from new blocks, many many items, new mobs, and so forth. So far I'm just using slightly modified images from Spiral Knights, which works decently for items, but if we're going to have custom mobs and blocks and such, then that's probably not going to cut it.

I can take care of managing all the items and much of the programming, but this is too big of a project for me to do alone, so if you think you can help me out with any of the above, let me know and we'll get started!

i made a giant 64*64 block mexican wave machine with this awesome mod :biggrin.gif:

Did you actually get it to wave back and forth, or is that just a single clip of the wave being played and reversed over and over?

In case anyone wants to play around with this, I've uploaded the save file so you can download it and play around. You should only need piston mod (and mod loader of course) to use it.

I made a video tutorial on how to make a simple Auto-Bridge out of pistons. Goes through it step by step in case anyone was having trouble with this.

Can you ride the wave? Try going from one corner of the field to the other... hopping from sand block to sand block. Is it possible?

Unfortunately, no. The blocks aren't solid while they're flying through the air, so you'd just go right through them.

What you can do, however, is set it all on fire.

Threw together an expanded version of my previous wave, this time as a 33x33 field instead of a 100-long single wave.

A much more efficient sand-wave machine. You only need the line of pistons and a line of blocks to each side. Theoretically you can make this as long as you want. You could also set up a few next to each other to make a field of waves.

I'm also fiddling around with a piston-themed fortress, with a rebuilding bridge at the front, rapid repairing walls, plenty of hidden passages, and so on. I've got a lot of plans for that, but I'm still refining a lot of what's going into it, to save space and such, so I doubt it'll be done for a while.

It should be very very easy to enter hell. It should then just be so dangerous that doing so without at the very minimum some iron armor and an iron sword is just suicide. Trying to build an actual base there should be nigh impossible, and even if you get a huge stone cathedral with a billion lanterns, it's still not truly "safe".

Jackhammer/Pulverizer pick sounds like a great idea, make it mine twice as fast as a normal pick, but it makes the blocks drop nothing or possibly just gravel, even ore runes. So, it's great for mining out big areas fast, or finding ore, but you have to be careful you don't pulverize a bunch of gold or diamond accidentally.

Also, is it just me or does the current uses on each tool rune seem really...weak? I mean, the farmer's charm rune uses up 8 redstone and you need 2 gold for a hoe, but it only works 14 times? There's also the problem with the message spam using these things makes. could you perhaps solve both problems by making the rune last as long as the item isn't broken? Then, since you're making all types of items usable, you can make gold runes required for some of the more powerful runes that it would be imbalanced to be able to use for the whole of, say, a diamond pick's life.

This assumes that you can affect the durability of an item with the mod, though, which I suppose since durability is client-side right now you can't? Maybe you could do this at least for the runes that work on breaking a block, like the pulverizer.
