It depends on how long you plan on staying in the Nether, and what you plan to be doing while you're there.
If you're going in to gather materials like netherrack, glowstone, soul sand or lava, don't bring any diamond gear, armor or food. It should be a simple in-and-out trip and you'll want maximum storage capacity. That means iron picks, buckets, and if you bring anything else it should only be cobblestone. If you die your losses are minimal.
For any extended trips to the Nether, such as for base building, setting up a transport hub, or survival challenges, it warrants lots of wheat and a crafting table, lots of cobblestone, and a full suit of armor.
I make frequent trips to the Nether for glowstone, and I only bring 3 iron picks, a stone axe, one stack of cobblestone, and an iron breastplate. If I need food I hunt Pigmen.
The thunder sound is badass. Hearing it when you're underground is not. Notch and company shouldn't go and edit the sound thunder makes. It should just get quieter as you get further away from the surface.
Go into your kitchen, open it, look around, realize that you have nothing to eat, and continue about your day. Repeat as necessary every 10-15 minutes.
Houses? What are those? I thought everyone in Minecraft lived in 2x1 holes in the ground... That's what I've been doing, anyway... At least until the spiders leave me alone.
If you don't like the Enderman spam, I agree with you. But I don't support making threads bitching about it, because you would end up contributing to the cancer.
If you like checking the forum and seeing 4+ Enderman threads being made every second, you're an idiot.
Solution: comment on existing threads about the level of spam. You're going to encounter the same amount of backlash without contributing to thread-spam.
Why do people feel like they need to use big, bold text/fonts? To attract attention to their posts? To look like a "speshul snofleyk"?
It's a way to attract attention to their posts. And it works. We all think they look like ****ing idiots when they do it, but keep that a secret from them. Let them enjoy themselves.
ON TOPIC: Minecraft was not designed for picky people. Every terrain has its drawbacks, and you're going to wind up terraforming it to some degree later on.
The place I set up my main base of operations is usually in a desert, preferably near an oasis, coastline, or some other body of water. I like to do this somewhat near another, greener biome, because at some point I'm going to need to go cut down trees when my tree farm isn't producing enough of it to suit my needs, or to hunt.
Why the desert? Cacti, my friend. Cacti. They're a cheap, easy form of defense, and if you know what you're doing you keep out the riffraff. Cacti defenses, I feel fit in aesthetically with the desert. Trying to use them as defense in a forest biome would result in something ugly.
On top of that it doesn't rain, so I save on graphics computing speed while not having to worry about lightning striking my wooden roof.
^^^^^^^
That's you
The drawbacks to the desert are a distinct lack of water, trees, and passive mobs.

God dammit would you just use a normal font? You're seriously starting to **** me off.
On topic: it's not a bug. The pigmen come and rig your bed with explosives while you're not paying attention.

It's nice to know that there are other people on this site who don't think everyone with a conflicting opinion is a troll.
