    "The Collectrum" Survival Server

    ------------------------------------------------------

For all of you impatient Minecrafters out there who do not care about the details...

    IP: server.collectrum.net

Welcome to the Collectrum! We are a community that has been running since the good old Beta version of Minecraft (see "A brief history" for details). It is only just recently that we have opened up our server to the general public. Operated by former server owners and experienced administrators, we offer a vast and unique world (useless info, obviously every world is unique in this game...) for people to explore, build and ultimately thrive in. We aim towards building a community that allows people to truly enjoy the game, without the constant pressure of needing to achieve tedious goals. As much as vanilla Minecraft is fun, we also think that useful utility plugins are essential parts of most survival style servers.

But enough with all the propaganda... To be honest, we're just this other random survival server, emerging among the hundreds that already exist, inviting you all to hop on and have some fun!

    1. A brief history

As a veteran Minecraft player myself, I have always been looking for a good server to call home. It all started back when the game was in its late Alpha stages of development, with an awesome survival server called "VastCraft MC" (any current servers with that name is only coincidence and has no link to this one whatsoever!), run by one of the best server owners I've met in my life. Unfortunately, the owner has become extremely busy and has decided to ultimately shut down the server. Although many random people suggested to take over for him, his words were clear... "I rather see a successful server die gracefully than to have it turn into chaos under poor management".

Not long afterwards, some real life friends and I started playing on a faction PvP server, known as "King's Public Faction Based Survival Server". Its forum thread can still be found here, but the server has already died years ago. It was on this server that our faction name evolved, from "Omega" to "IDW", then to "Fenrir" and "Liandri". We finally named ourselves "The Collectors", which quickly evolved to "The Collectrum", hence our current name. Unfortunately, as all things must come to an end sooner or later, and it is with regret that I witnessed the peaceful shutdown of what is one of the best servers I've ever played on.

Then came a period where I was an errant soul in the vast realm of random survival servers. As much as I loved multiplayer, the servers I visited were never the same as before. Countless times I have joined as one of a server's first players and stuck until that server's death. Countless times I have been offered staff rank and participated in fun events. Countless times I have helped other server owners manage their configurations, gaining the experience I am putting into application today. But countless times I have thought about VastCraft and King's Server, and realized that ever since they died, no matter what server I try to call home, it all lacked, in my view, the fun and excitement that these two servers had. Until one day I stumbled upon a little forum post, with only one paragraph of summary and the server IP. Never have I thought that it will become the place where I will meet awesome people who are sill with us to this day.

Originally named "WaffleCraft" and then "IntoTheNether", this new server has become my new home. Along with fellow admins and staff members, we have brought this server to a whole new level, and renamed it "SheraCelestia", who's now inactive forum thread can still be found here. Since players were constantly harassing us with questions often un-related to issues or the server itself, we have also been playing casually on another server to escape the pressure of our own players from time to time. This other server, known as "RedSpin MC" or "RSMC" for short, is also where I have met part of the awesome people who are still with us today. Unfortunately, SheraCelestia had also come to its end, and we have directed all our players towards RedSpin, effectively merging the two servers' staff and player base into one. A few months later, RedSpin also decided to shut down, potentially leaving players nowhere left to call home. Since I have always been planning on running a new server myself, I have decided to put all what I have learned in the past three years to use. What started as a private server with what's left of the RedSpin player base (some of which still came from way back SheraCelestia), has now grown into a fully operational server. It is now that I am opening our doors to the general public, hoping that I can offer the same fun and joy that I have once experienced long ago.

In memory of VastCraft, King's Factions PvP, SheraCelestia and RedSpin MC,
    Welcome to the Collectrum!

    2. Gameplay and plugins

A rooftop view of the server's spawn area

The server runs a few major plugins that alters vanilla gameplay in a way that makes everything much more fun, but still keeps the classic tree punching and block breaking of the game. These include "Essentials", "McMMO", "LWC" and "SilkSpawners". We also run a few utility plugins allowing server staff to better monitor plugin functionality, create new and awesome public spaces and as well as stop dreaded griefers and hackers from ruining the fun of other players. These include "ConsoleScheduler", "CoreProtect 2", "PermissionsEx", "VanishNoPacket", "WorldEdit", "WorldGuard" and more.

    Essentials
As the plugin's name states, this package plays an essential role (no puns intended!) in PvE interactivity. It offers fun and useful commands, the most common ones being "/sethome", "/home", "/spawn" and "/tpa". "/sethome" and "/home" allow players to set personal waypoints they can teleport to at any given time. By default, each player can set up to three (3) homes, plus their vanilla bed spawn, automatically set by sleeping in it once. "/spawn" teleports the player to the server's central spawn, a safe zone where players can hang out without risk getting killed by hostile mobs. This area also holds warp buttons (teleportation triggers), offering a fast and reliable way to travel to important or interesting zones across the map. Finally, "/tpa" can be used by a player to request a direct teleportation to another player's location. This request can be replied by "/tpaccept" or "/tpdeny", depending on whether the friend to whom you wish to teleport to is in a good mood or not today...

    McMMO
"McMMO's main function is to incorporate an RPG-like skill system that players will have access to right from the beginning. Depending on how much a certain tool is used or a certain action is performed, players will gain experience that will eventually add bonuses such as double drops, rare drops, or ability enhancement."
(above quote from the McMMO wiki page).
Aside from skill levels and abilities, McMMO also offers a party system, similar to factions, clans, guilds, etc. A party can be created and customized via the "/party" menu, and players within the same party can share xp levels, teleport to each other and communicate within private party chat channels. The plugin also include some nifty firework effects when you level up!

    LWC
If you're afraid that your cousins (or any other player as a matter of fact) come into your house and steal your hard earned treasure, you can lock your chest and doors up with this simple to use plugin. Chests and furnaces are automatically locked under your name upon placement. Doors, buttons, pressure plates and even crafting tables can also be locked using the "/lock" or "/cprivate" commands. After entering the lock command, just punch the block entity (chest, furnace, door, etc) that you wish to lock and it will do so automatically, preventing access by anyone else but yourself. If however, you wish to add your friend to the access list, just do "/cmodify [player name]" and punch the block, which will add their name to the authorization list. The command "/cinfo" allows you to check the detailed locking information of a block, such as the lock owner and the access list. To entirely unlock a container or block, simply use the command "/unlock". We are not responsible of your cousin using your account to do harm though, that's your fault!

    SilkSpawners
Have you ever wanted to create this awesome mob grinder, but feel discouraged as the dungeon you have found is too far away from your home land? I know I have... SilkSpawners will allow players ranked [Regular] or above to use a Silk Touch enchanted pickaxes to pick up any mob spawner and move it somewhere useful. And no, it will not revert back into that pesky pig spawner. Using a non-enchanted pickaxe, however, will only yield some pieces or iron, which still consists of an interesting twist in vanilla gameplay.

    CoreProtect 2
Being the most commonly used anti-grief and rollback plugin, CoreProtect is a powerful plugin that records every block change and player action on the map. With a flick of the wrist, staff members are able to undo everything a griefer has done, whether it be within a certain period of time, within a certain radius or just everything, without touching other players' structures and without needing to restart the server or reset the map. So if you're here to ruin other players' fun, think twice before doing so. Not only will we simply undo what you have done, but we will also put you into this interesting denial list know as the ban list. And if on the contrary you're here to have fun, you can rest assured that if anything ever happens to your neat creations, it can be rolled back within seconds. Just inform a staff member and they will come investigate and fix the issue!

    3. Hardware specifications

Since many players judge a server's quality by what machine it runs on rather than how the administrators optimize the configurations (which is sad but unfortunately true at times), we feel obliged to be transparent and specify the main characteristics of the dedicated server we rely on. So if you're that type of person, or if you're just curious and wish to calculate the number of TNTs the server can handle before we notice a difference and get you into trouble, here are our basic system specifications:

Box type: 1u standard 19" dedicated server
Operating System: Linux CentOS 6, 64-bit (this is not "hardware" but you know...)
    Processor:
    Intel Xeon L5420 (4 cores, 2.50 GHz, 1333 MHz)
Memory: 16 Gb, DDR3 (8 of which are currently allocated to the Minecraft server software)
Hard drive: 500 Gb HDD (no it's not SSD... but it is good enough if you know how to optimize it!)
Network cable capacity: 1.0 Gbps dual port fiber (connectivity via Internap)

    4. Server IP and website address

We are surprised that you are patient enough and have been sticking around, reading through all of the above details. Or maybe you just read half of it and decided to skip to the interesting part, or have jumped directly down here from the very top of the thread, in which case we are still surprised since our server's IP address is already displayed at the beginning of the post... But since you're here with us now, we assume it is to gain valuable knowledge regarding methods to connect to the server and join the fun.

Our main server IP address is and will always be:
    server.collectrum.net

However, it may be possible that the main IP is not recognized by the complex realm of Internet DNS at some unlucky moments, especially right after maintenance downtimes (which we assure you will happen only once every year or so at the very most!). If such cases ever occur, which it shouldn't by the way, feel free to connect to the server via its direct numerical address, which is currently:
    206.212.243.122

For more information about the server (as if this thread is not detailed enough already...), or to join the community forum, server IRC live chat, or to donate as contribution, find more contact information, file complaints about how bad this post is, or for any other general inquiries, feel free to browse our website at:
    http://www.collectrum.net/

Important Notice: The website and all its dazzling features remain, as of now, under construction. If you wish to contribute to building the website, please read question #3 of the FAQ below before futilely asking. Thank you!

    5. FAQ

P.S.: "FAQ" means "Frequently Asked Questions". Although these questions seem funny or ridiculous, they are actually what server staff across the world encounter every day... Other server administrators will understand what we mean...

    1. Can I have the rank of [Mod] / [Admin] / [Youtuber] / [op] / [Insert any staff or special rank here]?
No (obvious answer expected). Ranks are earned by showing that you care for others and not just your own selfish person. We will contact you and ask you if we think you have what it takes to both have fun with awesome players and deal with stupid players. Moreover, we will only promote you to staff member if you are able to use this nifty thing called "common sense", which is clearly what you're unable to do if you ever have to ask this question...

    2. But I'm from Planet Minecraft and I'm here to review the server, I need administrator status to do so or your server will be shut down.
Yes, thank you. I am from Planet Earth and I'm here to have fun and to ensure other players enjoy their stay as well. I have administrator status to do so and your character shall be exiled forever.

    3. Do you need a website / Facebook / Twitter / YouTube / PMC / MCF / [Insert any social media advertisement content here]?
Our website is already under development by staff members, and we currently do not need any other medium. And no, you will not receive a special rank or staff rank even if you did create one against our approval. Thank you for asking though.

    4. What are the ranks? (ok, at least this one is a legit question that makes sense)
Newcomers and Regulars are general ranks that consist 90% of the players. Veterans are those who have been with us for quite a long time, currently those who have been on our past servers (see "A brief history"). VIPs are private ranks given to those who have helped a lot or who are an integral part of major maintenance events (example: server architects, retired staff, etc). Moderators are there to help players in-game and deal with spammers, griefers, hackers, etc. Ask them if you need any help! Busy Administrators can play the same role as moderators, but in addition may also deal with major updates, server configuration, data management, etc (the more technical aspect of keeping the server running).

    5. What is the server's IP?
Uh... How were you able to connect to the server if you still need to ask that? Note: This happened more than once in our past... Any admin with enough experience will know what we mean and can recall players asking similarly surprising questions...

If you have more unimportant questions, feel free to ask around in-game, we'll answer to the best we can. Who knows, maybe your question will one day appear in this list?

    See you all in-game!

P.S.: "One should always enjoy life, whatever he/she does."

Also, why is justified text alignment not an option in thread formatting? :(

posted a message on Saturday with Sach: Whats In a Name
I first used this name in the strategy game "Age of Empires", quite a few years ago. A name was required to connect to multiplayer and for the campaign. Since I was eager to jump into the game, I quickly typed in the address of my old apartment home (from before my family moved from downtown to the suburbs).

And that name stuck with me through many games, until now.

posted a message on Looking for: Simple factions server [1.7.2]
    Hello fellow minecrafters,

Some friends and I are looking for a survival factions PvP server to call home. The server we have established ourselves in a long time ago came to its end. We were part of that server for more than two years. For almost 10 months now, we've been trying to find a new place to call home, to re-create our thriving faction and have some fun with everyone. However, most of the dozens, if not hundreds, of servers we tried do not meet our requirements. They're poorly managed, abusive, unfair, etc. What we would like is the following, placed in importance order. Note that they're all ordered as number one for a reason.

    1. As simple as possible. We don't want to hear if you have Arenas, Minigames, McMMO, Towny, Multiverse with a dozen gamemodes and maps, or 500 other near-useless implementations such as Obsidian Breaker or Timber. We're not interested, and will try (and succeed) to avoid all of those complex servers. What we want is the nice simple Factions plugin with some other technical utilities if needed as Permissions or WorldGuard. The simpler the better.

    1. Fair resource distribution. We don't want staff having drop parties giving over-powered items every few minutes, nor do we want a server that gives donors a billion resources, perks and commands, or kits in which players get free sets of armor and weapons every few hours. Best is to have a nice small server without donation ranks at all, but if there are, we hope it is balanced and entirely fair (if we do donate we want to be sure it is also fair for others who are not able to donate). This goes the same with resources. The less spawned-in items the better.

    1. Rather medium sized. Massive servers with 200+ people online isn't exactly what we hope to play in. An empty server isn't very tempting either, unless it's a new one, in which case we would be happy to join in. Although this is not the deciding factor, it would be best if the server has an average of approximately 10-50 players.

    1. Responsible Staff. Of course, every server will claim their staff to be responsible and mature, but it rarely is true. We just hope that it is this time.

    1. Adequate map settings. A map that resets every month or with every update isn't very suitable for our style of gameplay. We are used to long-lasting maps, with either no world border at all (optimal setting) or a border at 15 000 blocks or beyond. Large biomes setting is also appreciated, although the good old default terrain generation is quite fun as well. We do not wish to see too many complex custom biomes from a dozen mods though, the more vanilla the better (See requirement 1 - As simple as possible).

As for the technical environment, we will not be too picky upon the specifications, but it would be best if the server meets those states in order to give the best gameplay experience to all players:

    - At least 4.0 Gb of RAM
    and
    - SSD Storage System

It might seem like a lot of requirements, but I'm pretty sure there are a lot of servers out there who do meet the above settings and are willing to let us call it home. We have been searching for almost a year now, and I hope that by this publication we will finally be able to find a place to call home.

    Thanks!
    - 380.

Um... not really... the Courtyard plot at x(-45) z(-187) is owned by someone else.
If that plot is already taken, I'll take another plot. Just give me the coords when everything is settled :P

Well, since the applications have been moved to this part and that my CivTown plot application wasn't read, I'll post both here :P

    CIVILIAN TOWN PLOT APPLICATION

    Minecraft username:
    380508

    Do you have 15,000$ in-game?:
    Yes.

    Rules accepted?:
    Agreed

Why do you want a plot in the civilian town?:
Now that I've worked hard and got out of prison, I'm looking forward to living outside the facility, with all the civilians out there. However a plot in the Civil Town would be nice, since I will be able to have a good place to live and, most likely, a good hotel running for civilians as soon as I learn how to do so with the plug-ins.

    Coordinates:
    x: -910
    y: 87 (88 on Rei's Minimap)
    z: -355

    COURTYARD PLOT APPLICATION

    Minecraft name:
    380508

Do you have 15,000$ in-game a Golden VIP or up rank?:
    Yes, I have Golden-VIP

    Rules accepted?:
    Agreed

Why do you want a plot ?:
In order to build a good place for both myself and visitors. I would include a hotel section and some other great things. And seeing the lack of Courtyard space, I'll try to make it as good as possible so that this specific space won't be wasted.

    Plot Coords:
    x: -45
    y: 64 (63)
    z: -187

    Minecraft Username:
My username is 380508. It came from my old address :P

    How did you find us?:
I was searching for a good survival server to call home. When browsing the servers list I came across this post and it immediately interested me.

What features attracted you to this server?:
The very good organization as farmworlds and detailed ranks/privileges system is what I think makes the server run well. People are also very friendly upon joining and they are also very helpful. I haven't talked to any admins or moderators yet but I can tell that they are just as helpful as every player around the maps. Other elements such as creepers unable to blow your buildings up or the complex economy system, as well as the ability to detect and roll-back griefs are also what makes this server very organized. Additionally, over a year open is quite good for a Minecraft server. The owner and admins must therefore have a lot of experience.

Any suggestions based upon your first impressions?:
I had to think a bit to find anything to suggest, since everything, on first impression, seems perfectly well done. However a larger world border on the main would be nice since there are a lot of players and buildings are becoming packed up at some parts. Then again, this might not be a very important factor since people won't mine or gather wood in that world. Eliminating the borders and letting people build beyond the roads would be nice, especially for those like me who loves building their own city far from civilized areas. If financially possible, a better host would reduce lag and increase speed, but this is not a big issue.

What command should be used if you need to report griefing or need help?:
To request help, the command /modreq can be used. It is "the player's best friend" and is much better than just yelling out problems in the chat.

Anything else we should know about you?:

My internet connection is not so good, expect me to drop out anytime. If people are talking to me and I don't respond (and if my char seems to be frozen in motion), it means I've lost connection to the server and will have to relog. But most of all, I'm looking forward to being part of this nice community and hope that I'll meet some nice people!
