posted a message on Questions about defending against sieges and raids

The fence is out from the building about 20 blocks or so. The raids spawn well outside of the fence area, probably about 60 blocks or so away. When we stand on top, we can see them spawn in and it has never been even close. Also, when I laid the magma blocks, I noticed that a golem I had outside was avoiding them and I wondered if the raid mobs would do the same. I'm happy to report that they are too stupid to realize they should not stand there.

We built a central building for our villagers (with a basement) and then put a fence around it. We have had no issues with raid mobs spawning inside the fenced area.

Another way to challenge yourself is to modify the terrain less. For example, I built a rather large scale castle, and while I did take down part of a hill, I didn't flatten the entire area. So when you walked inside the castle there were floors at different levels. It can add interest to your builds. Another build I really enjoyed was building inside of a mountain. I had periodic spots where a balcony would come out or a window, but never at the same level.

Since starting a new world with my partner, we haven't killed the dragon. Instead, we have been focusing on our "raid" village and trying to get librarians that offer a variety of good stuff. One trick to killing the villagers you don't want without pissing off the golems, is to use a boat and some magma cubes.

Get the undesirable villager in the boat, paddle over to your magma blocks (which should be surrounded by fencing to prevent escape), jump out of the boat, put the gate back that you had to break to get the boat in, then break the boat and watch the villager die. This method doesn't seem to hurt your popularity either.

Back to dragon prepping... Last night I finally got a villager who would trade Blast Protection IV. Sunday I got potions in order. The slow falling potion can't be beat when doing dragon battle, in my opinion. As a bonus, all my villager trading leveled me up enough to apply enchantments to everything. Sadly, it was also last night that I remembered you can't combine Protection and Blast Protection. Once I have some shulker boxes, it will be time for BIG projects.

Finally got a mending villager in our "Raid" village. Turns out that my partner was killing off villagers prematurely, so it's entirely possible that we've had one, or several, long before now. (sigh)

Our fence system around the village and letting at least 10 golems spawn before starting a raid makes it super easy for two players and only slightly challenging for one. The real trick seems to be not firing at the golems. We are toying with the idea of putting a magma block perimeter around the outside of the fence. We have also discovered that dogs during a two player raid is a very bad idea. It's too easy to fire arrows at your friend's dogs.

My next to do is to finish the starter base I started earlier this summer.

posted a message on Does having extra bookshelves help enchanting?

Maybe it's just coincidence, but I had the minimum number of shelves and kept getting one or two enchantments on everything that weren't that great. So I added a few more bookshelves and the very first sword I enchanted had 6 fairly decent enchantments on it. And then everything after that seems to have been better than I was previously getting. Of course, that could just be wishful thinking.

I found one like that once. The amount of shulker shells was just fantastic!!

I enchanted a sword. I've never gotten this many enchantments on one item before.

posted a message on Underground base entrance hall, any ideas?

I think it's fine the way it is. It's kind of fun for other people to go explore some tiny little hut or entrance into the ground and then find something huge inside. One of my favorites was this mid-sized unassuming wood cottage someone had built. But then you go down to the basement and it looks like the Halls of Khazad-dûm.

Chests for major storage. But I have started using the barrels for aesthetic decor like in-wall cabinetry or mixed with bookcases.

After working on server community projects for months, I was able to mostly finish a room in my castle. I'll probably do a little more to it, or just let it morph over time, but I'm pretty pleased with my first interior room.

posted a message on What do you do with Woodland Mansions?

We gutted one and remodeled it into a community base on a Realm. Most of the wall removal was between rooms to make larger rooms. Brewing area with an abundant netherwart farm, enchanting area, public storage/ item sharing, bedrooms, trophy room, plus a villager trading area that doubled as a zombie farm. We also made pens for sheep, cows, chickens, and horses around the mansion. Also added a farming area and an entrance to a community mine.

posted a message on This is why raids are not enjoyable

We built a large central building for the villagers, put a fence out about 15 blocks from that, ladders on all side of the building, and a couple pieces of carpet on the fence so we could hop over quickly and pick up loot. Having the fence area gives you enough space to back away and get a potion. Also, once you finish the first raid, you can just hold a totem in your other hand and cheat death. If you can get your villager population high enough, they spawn golems, which helps a lot. We have discovered in multi-player that dogs are bad because they accidentally get shot and then become hostile. Also, if you clear out or find a village with wide open space around it, you can shoot at the evokers before they even get close. If you shoot them soon enough, they don't retaliate.

Something we discovered in our first raid that we haven't exploited, is that the mobs don't go under water. We are considering adding a moat that we can access from our side of the fence and get up under the mobs. I'm not sure if the vexes can go underwater or not. We are also uncertain if an underwater approach would help avoid the fangs that come up from the ground. I have also toyed with the idea of installing a free fall and water elevator. So if you get down to 1 heart, you can quickly drop down out of range, fix yourself up, and then shoot back up the water elevator and resume battle.

The only thing to be aware of with our current system is that if they bunch up next to the fence, one or two mobs can make it over. Usually isn't too bad though. We have done several raids successfully. Our biggest bummer is that the librarians don't seem to offer discounts on their enchanted books. So the cheapest mending we have at this point is 38 emeralds.

I thought it was just me, but I too believe the spawn rate is lower for the zombie villagers.

Finished my cave spider spawner XP farm. I was going to add a mob crusher to soften them up, but I think I might go the potion route for starters.
