posted a message on So, the forum is being closed for new messages, where do we go instead?

r/Minecraft seems to be largely players showing off creations and screenshots, not so much discussion, yet at the same time they have silly guidelines such as don't post a picture of a surprising mob outside a window, of a cake day, and don't debate which versions are better (actually, that's.. kind of tied to criticism of the game... which needs to be spoken).

I'm interested in there being a more open, third-party place for discussing Minecraft, perhaps that also encourages a decent and interesting community. One that doesn't ban criticism of the game, mentioning of the name Notch, or screenshots of crafting cake.

If you're interested too, and would like to discuss this with me or have any ideas, add me on discord: 0ct0ber#6230. I might host a new subreddit and/or discord server for discussion, but would probably need some moderators.

posted a message on Does anyone else feel like Minecraft is getting too mod-like?
    Quote from SuperCore»

Same. In 1.8 when I started out everything had the theme of 'ancient'. The game felt like very tool and every block was from the ancient times. But now, things get more and more complicated. What's the point of socialization and self-discovery if you add the recipe book? There are many other examples.

Seems like the only way to keep yourself to the standard Minecraft that people used to know is to play an older version. This is not beneficial, as many servers are moving away to the newer versions.

It has all started in 1.9 in my opinion. The PVP thing sucked. 80% of the community will agree on me.

Then stuff got added in 1.12, 1.13, and now 1.14 with the fletching table, cartography table etc.

Wish Minecraft would keep this 'ancient'-based feeeling.

I've gotten used to just the shields and attack cooldowns, and to me it isn't huge compared to everything else... but the sum of the rest of the features in 1.13/1.14 are what I find estranging- the tridents, the ocean changes, the massive texture change, the overall feel. Honestly I wish more people appreciated the simplicity of the game before 1.13/1.14, and liked it rather than just wanting 1.14 with attack cooldowns disabled.

As for 1.8, I like a balanced amount of PvP, but the multiplayer community there seems very centered around it and Factions, often even OPFactions... and there isn't a whole lot else I can find. So I'm in a bit of an odd place, playing on 1.12 for community reasons, though the playerbase has shrunk as people have switched to 1.13/1.14.

posted a message on Does anyone else feel like Minecraft is getting too mod-like?

I personally feel that in the latest updates, the game is more complex, and like a lot of mods were added. I've felt this way gradually more and more with each update, ever since 1.10. It's not just that more stuff has been added in the updates; some of the features actually feel weird, like they aren't a part of vanilla (even though they are)... How do you guys feel about Minecraft in its current state? Does it feel like the old days? Or does it feel too mod-like to you?

posted a message on What kind of server do people want? + ideas for a new server type

It seems like you have good ideas. I think it's easy to make servers not-great today, by adding too many plugins and features that don't make the server better visually or gameplay wise- and just add clutter, and sometimes a reliance on the server for items. I often see servers with too many crates, rewards, kits, NPCs, GUIs, holograms and a sidebar on your screen 24/7 that tells you your hunger (which you can see already), health, money, and ping. I might make a guide for making better/not-bad servers with those sort of topics covered.

The first gamemode idea used to be more popular, and was called Freebuild, as you could get items from [Free] signs but were still in survival. I think it can be pretty fun with the right players.

One other gamemode idea is superflat survival- people would have to gather resources and saplings from villages, and then build up from the superflat. I played it once on a server, and it was pretty fun.

I also highly recommend getting the CoreProtect plugin, which helps you find who griefed and also roll it back (including WorldEdit griefing).

posted a message on Minecraft is now running at 1 FPS (1.13.2)

My computer is new and runs at 60 FPS, even with high render distance in 1.12. 1.13 drops it to ~30-40 fps... there is definitely significant performance problems. I've also seen and heard that worlds and chunks take much longer to load.

posted a message on So what do you guys think about the new 1.14 textures?

I think the new textures look neat, but they seem like a different game's style. This on top of all the recent updates makes it seem more like they're changing the game than simply updating it- and for me (and maybe some others) it makes the latest update seem more strange and unfamiliar. How will this affect adventure maps, builds, animations, and YouTube videos before and after the update? Will classic music videos of the game like Revenge end up looking outdated or unusual? Or will some players like the textures, some players dislike, and then there's less of a standard for videos?

Plus now some of the merchandise people bought won't match up with the actual game.

posted a message on Problems with these forums

I think there are two problems with these forums.

First, threads discussing updates are getting closed much too easily. This thread was someone's opinion and criticism about recent updates and changes to the game, but it got closed for being "too close" to "Is Minecraft Dying...?". They didn't mention the game dying or popularity declining anywhere, which is what that thread is declared as about. It seems any kind of criticism about how the game has changed recently is being lumped into the "Is Minecraft Dying...?" thread or the "1.13 Opinion Thread"; where they cannot be seen, and where their context becomes the game dying or specifically a problem with 1.13. This only stifles discussion and discourages- if not censors- the people who have a criticism on Minecraft's changes.

I get if the forum moderators are trying to prevent duplicate threads or a sea of criticism about changes filling up the Discussion section, but that's what the Recent Updates and Snapshots section is for; and only true duplicates should be closed, not threads that talk about something and make a comment about 1.13 on the side, or that discuss a single thing in an update.

Second, you're able to edit polls on your own thread. This makes little sense except if people picked two multiple choice answers that are not supposed to be picked together. People should not be able to alter polls to their favor to change what we think on the forums. I propose that we are not only able to see the now edited poll results, but also any votes that were removed.

Edit: I realized this might be the wrong place to post this, but I still think it pertains particularly to this forum section, since that is where the problems I am talking about mostly occur. You can move this to Forum Discussion & Info if need be.

posted a message on How do people get players to come on their servers?

Personally I wouldn’t be interested in a server where you just focus on some grinding task. If the problem is keeping players when you have enough new people joining, you need to change this. You do not need to have a lot of ranks to get more members, and in most servers this isn’t even done (or a good idea). Try making the gamemode more fun in itself and shift the focus. Survival is a good example, it can be fun and player-driven, without many features or customizations set by the server.

posted a message on Any classic factions servers out there?

I have mixed feelings about this. I also feel like it’s a larger issue than just OPFactions. Servers and multiplayer has become quite polarized today, as more core and central forms of the game have decreased and polar opposites have increased. You could say that factions, semivanilla survival and creative have been replaced by landclaim servers and then overpowered factions along with similar grind or economy based gamemodes (prison and skyblock).

I support good server diversity, but I dislike this. First of all, peaceful survival with no threat of griefing has its place, and I can enjoy it, but some players including me may feel like it has no spice or challenge to it. There’s no competition from other players, and it’s similar to playing on single player in the sense that you have nothing besides mobs challenging you. I think it’s good many servers have this, but would also like to have a more challenging option, and basically the only other common option is to go to overpowered factions. Second of all, I think factions was much more than just raiding, griefing and grinding. To me, it was about organizing a team, dealing with trust, occasional battles between rivals, and also as a team ending up building some really cool stuff. Earlier factions was not too raiding heavy, and maybe had room for more types of players- and that’s why I think it was so popular. I also think this is why the oncoming of OPFactions has ended the common factions era, as it takes away much of that and players are instead encouraged to be expedient and use the quickest means of making money. Insanely competitive games that sacrifice other elements tend to be played less by the majority of people.

I don’t know of any good factions servers right now, but I am making a new survival server that won’t have landclaim or be too peaceful. If you want, you can join when it’s up or help. Also, how do you think factions can be made to be more appealing, with a realistic effort? I wonder if the most rotten players just being ruthless is in part what drives off many players.
