Hello, I am new to minecraft forums, but I have been around for quite a while with plugin developments.
I am not sure if this post belongs here, but since it is a "meaningful content" I thought I'd put here. Don't consider this as some advertisement, but some discussion hub open to suggestions and ideas!
Introduction: I have been obsessed with time travel for a long time, surfing through youtubes daily about paradoxes, white holes, tachyon energy.. all those scientific stuff. While Minecraft is my favourite game ( and probably the only game I play besides FIFA ). I wanted to create time travel in Minecraft - a real proper one!
Why not mods? I think time travel is most fun when you are not alone, but have players and a world with a history of many individuals who contributed within it. Also, from a developer standpoint, its hard to 'intercept packets' with Forge or Sponge.. or Fabricmc. I've tried, but its quite not straightforward. Also, I don't want players to have additional installations - simply come as they are! (except for the server owner of course)
So, what has been going on? For about 4~6 months pure work now, I have prototyped various versions of time travel, some of which include:
-"Time control" mod that lets you slow, speed, and rewind time
-"World auto backup" mod that automatically backs up world and simulates time travel.
Yes, but clearly these two are quite off from being an authentic time travel.
Then one day, I watched the movie "Back to the future" and "Time Machine"; Now, what if I use packets to simulate the past?
So I present you.. Retrospection plugin, coming soon
What this plugin promises?:
-You can travel back in time, roughly accurately to most points in time. (Not to precise seconds etc. But the precision may be configured)
-See your past self moving and alive, past friends, past interactions. Like a whole movie about yourself. Most of the interactions are recorded, besides few minor things (i.e. villager golem swinging arms).
-See the past entities. past builds. Of everything that once existed in the world. Did your wolf die? No worries. travel back in time - your wolf is quite immortal across timeline.
-Since the "replay" of the past is based entirely on packets, even if you are in same world with your friend your time will go on at another pace!
-Minecraft Clock - You can see the month, day, minutes, seconds in Minecraft time!
-Seasons - Yes. Minecraft will have seasons based on the month, day, minutes, and seconds. Each season comes with special characteristics such as rain/snow probability per day. It will make time travel even more interesting. What did you do last Christmas? Travel back to find out!
-See the past yourself that is also seeing your past past self! - Inspired by back to the future movie, I decided to follow this pattern. Welcome to paradoxes.
What this plugin will NOT promise:
-Sounds from the past. Unfortunately, past replays will be entirely visual based - to keep track of sound packets takes up too much memory. Perhaps one day, who knows, when memories are infinitely available.
What this plugin may aim for in future updates after official release: -Travel to the future! I'm not sure how this gonna work, but we'll find out -Interaction with past Sadly, you cannot interact with the past for now. I have yet not figured a way to account for paradoxes. I am thinking of some system in my head, but it's quite complex. -Your suggestions. I'm open to suggestions. Feel free to comment!
Excited yet? Here are some screenshots from the prototype build I'm working on right now:
Its a spring season - flowers appear everywhere, as I watch the sunrise breathe its illuminance upon pile of logs.
Travelled back 4 months, and oh well.. I did that two more times - there's 2 of me there.
Feels nice to be back at present, in Summer of warmth.
Disclaimer: Yes, with such an ambitious project comes ambitious requirements! This plugin will require SSD disks (disk write speed should be fast) and at least 2GB of rams. There are some performance settings. And it DOES take up quite a lot of storage (esp if you track entity movements). But given that we live in a modern world with plenty of storage spaces, I'm sure it can reach up to certain rate. Even so, I'm devising a smart solution to 'limit' the disk space the mod can take. Leave comment about it below!
I see this plugin with so much potential but it's equally ambitious and demanding. But I hope you all are excited for this project as much as I am!
Release date: I am not sure at this point; I am quite caught up with college admissions but I expect around first half of next year!
Also, I'd love some suggestions as to how I should let the users access the time machine / travel feature.
If you've made it thus far, I cannot but sincerely thank for your attention!
