The idea is to add a Quality Level to every item in the game, similar to Haven and Hearth or the new Salem.
Basically the world will start off with a default Quality Level, this will be low around 5-15 commonly, sometimes higher. As you craft you will be able to extract better quality resources from the world,plants and animals around you. Your tools will also increase in quality. Higher quality finished products will produce greater effects, food will heal more, tools will mine faster or harder minerals. That kind of stuff.
Also items now have a max stack size of one, as if carrying 36 one meter cubes of rock wouldn't be hard enough!

World Gen - Make blocks spawn with a default random Quality Level.

Crafting - Stop crafting output from have stack size greater than 1.
Make Quality Level have an effect on something.
Todo Longer Term:
Add a form of stats/skills.
Add a larger health pool.
Make health have smaller increments.
Re-balance mob damage with respect to the above.
Make currently passive mobs attack when attacked (cows, sheep, pigs).

I can always use help coding if you like the project idea (please know what you are doing and have worked with mcp/minecraft at least some, and something more then just adding a block with modloader)

This will be open source assuming I can figure out how to do this with out publishing minecraft/modloader src.
