There's a player I want to kill in our SMP server with protection 4 on his armor but swords or axes take long to kill him and I might die before he does so I thought of using potions. I plan to buff myself with potions and give him debuffs so I get a better chance of winning but I'm not sure if poison or harming potion will deal good damage to him.
On the wiki it says that the Protection and Resistance effects decrease the Harming effect which is what you can use with the potion of damage. I would rather splash a potion of poison beforehand and the go for harming.
Also some potion-tipped arrows would make the difference, delivering the effects from afar. The problem with such arrows is the afaik they need a lingering potion to craft, and so they require dragon breath which is not easily collected for mass production.
Protection reduces virtually all forms of damage, except for void and hunger, but its effectiveness is affected by whether armor itself also reduces damage; the maximum protection attainable from armor (80% max reduction) and Protection (64% max reduction) is 92.8% but damage that bypasses armor, including "magic" (Harming and Poison) is only reduced by Protection's 64% reduction, which is quite a big difference (7.2% vs 36% of incoming damage taken, which is a factor of 5 times more damage taken from magic damage; the actual ratio will also depend on the strength of attacks since armor (but not Protection) becomes less effective against stronger attacks but potions can still typically deal many times more damage; Harming II deals 12 damage so that's 4.32 health lost per hit).
Also, unless they have no natural regeneration and unenchanted armor Poison is not very effective since you can regenerate half a heart every 0.5 seconds while Poison II takes half a heart every 0.6 seconds, with Protection reducing it to 0.18 hearts (55.6 seconds to lose 10 hearts with no regeneration), but this does mean they will need to stop to eat more often; throwing multiple potions of Harming II can kill anybody within a few seconds, even if they ate an enchanted golden apple (unless you are playing in 1.8 or earlier; they were nerfed from Regeneration V to Regeneration II, which is 8 times slower, restoring half a heart every 1.25 seconds instead of every 0.15 seconds; in other words, regeneration from food/saturation is over twice as fast, but does stack with the Regeneration effect).
Yes, the first potion is to eat away saturation. I'm supposing that it can be difficult to eat in combat (non really a pvp player, so I may be mistaken)

Honestly I’d just fill my hot bar with harming 2 pots and try to get them all on the guy. I’m pretty sure that would kill him, but you’d just have to be careful not to hit yourself. Also have strength and regen on hand in case the harming pots don’t work you can try to finish him off with an axe/sword.

If i can hit him with poison, he has to stop to eat more often which makes it easier for me to hit him with multiple harming potions. Thanks a lot this is very useful.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
