I haven't seen much of the new Nether because I started my world in 1.15. I built tunnels trying to get to the "new" Nether and found this thing. I believe it is a bastion, am I right? I would go right over to it and explore it if the Piglin Brutes hadn't been added to the game, but fighting them will be really hard for me.
I was wondering if the safest way to approach it would be from the top. I could try to tunnel over to it through the ceiling. Does that sound like a good strategy?
I've watched a few YouTube videos about bastion raids, but they were all made before the Piglin Brutes were added to the game.
I didn't have to worry about how to get in, my portal generated inside. :-) :-( ?
I would suggest blocking corridors with walls and gates so you have somewhere safeish to retreat to.
If you open the gates with buttons you can be sure they'll close after you.
If the ceiling is at least 3 blocks high I'd prefer stiles, block the corridor with fences or walls, place a block on top and put ladders on both sides of the block, then you just run up, hop and press forward to get safely and quickly over.
I believe that some of the piglins have crossbows, the brutes may only have axes but I think they can anger the normal ones. So don't rely on just fences, build some pillars to hide behind if you don't have a corner to hide behind.
Also, I think, the normal piglins spawn inside so for total safety you'd need to use slabs or lots of torches, light level above 11 according to the Wiki.
(You know you need 1 piece of golden armor to avoid the normal piglins attacking you on sight? And make sure there are none around if you break gold items or open or break chests.)

Oh yes, I expect that must be a bastion, I found mine full of piglins and a magma cube spawner in a room with lots of lava. Then I dug my way out to explore the rest of the Nether. It sure has changed. hasn't it?

Thank you for the tips about blocking the corridors, it sounds like really good advice! It never would have occurred to me to use a gate with a button. I will definitely try it! It may take me a while to get up enough courage to storm this huge place. :-)
Update: the news that Piglin Brutes weren't in the game yet took away my fear and I explored the bastion. The only challenging part for me was getting close enough to the magma cube spawner on the bottom lava level to destroy it. I used up 2 fire resistance potions in the attempt. I once watched a Bedrock video where the YouTuber destroyed the magma cube spawner from a distance of about 3 or 4 times as far as my pickaxe reaches. I had to bridge right over to it.
It was a fun experience, but the loot was very disappointing. I found only 4 chests in the entire gigantic building, even though I carefully explored each level in the huge square hollow building, removing excess blocks and fixing the holes in the walkways encircling the open center that drops into lava at the bottom. Maybe I missed some secret room - the screenshot seems to show an annex on the left. The chest in the middle of the lava on the bottom level at least had one piece of ancient debris in it. Otherwise the loot was nothing special.
I found it rather easy to place cobblestone between the blackstone blocks in the lava, but I've only filled the far half of the room so far, I had no intention of breaking the spawner, I just let the magma cubes come to me and kill them for the magma cream.
I made it easier for them to get up to the room next to the giant lava room where I can retreat into corridors where they can't reach me.
I've only found one chest so far, though I haven't really looked around the spawner or in the gold pile in the other half of the room, that chest had 4 crying obsidian though, only need 2 more to make a respawn anchor.
Was there any sign of the piglins being angered when you opened the chests?
It's not clear to me if they need the brutes to rile them up against the player or if there just weren't any close enough to my chest, most of the piglins had fallen down into holes, so I put blocks 2 blocks up, I really didn't want to fall down with them, I don't think there would be any way to get back up.
The piglins have to be within 16 blocks to notice a chest being opened or gold being mined and they will try to get to you if they notice. The trick of putting a hopper under a chest to empty it without opening it avoids angering nearby piglins. Piglins lose aggro very quickly, which make things even easier.
I originally thought of enclosing the magma cube spawner with blocks and keeping it but I wasn‘t good enough to carry out that plan. I was so swamped by magma cubes that I had to give it up.
No, the hopper trick no longer works. I think that was changed in 1.16.1. Both brutes and norglins (normal piglins) require normal line-of-sight to directly aggro on the player, but when you mess around with chests they will both aggro on you through walls. Because a brute is now targeting you, all nearby norglins will thus also aggro you and will aggro even if you're wearing gold.

It works for me, even if the piglin is standing right next to the chest.
And brutes don't seem to be in game yet, are you playing in a snapshot?
Normal piglins do detect the breaking of gold related blocks through walls though.
But not the opening of a chest.
So, in the snapshots, will the normal piglins detect the opening of a chest through a wall on their own with no brutes present?

I guess I was lucky, my portal spawned just within activation range of the spawner, though in a safe corridor.
My killing spot, the only place where the magma cubes could get out of the treasure room was outside the activation area and the lava slowed them down so I only ever had a few at a time. I'm not all that interested in gold so I haven't ventured in to mine the golden mountain in the center of the treasure room. I'd want to clear out the piglins first, or I guess, just make sure they couldn't get in though that might not be all that easy, there are lots of walkways at different heights.

I ended up burrowing in the wall around to the side of the lava room nearest the spawner, so I also had a safe corridor. But the magma cubes were simply too numerous to allow me to build a wall around the spawner. A more highly skilled player could have done it, but I felt lucky just to succeed in getting close enough to quickly smash it. After it was gone it wasn't hard to kill off all the magma cubes that had already spawned.
I then made a shelter completely enclosing the mountain of gold blocks, mined them to my heart's content and robbed the chest. I could hear the angry piglins outside, so I waited until they were quiet and exited the shelter. The Wiki says that the piglins only stay angry for 30 seconds when you anger them by stealing gold or opening chests, and that matches my experience. The only piglin I bothered to kill was one who wandered into my little safe room where I had deposited my shulker box. I needed to put loot into the box and didn't want the piglin to attack me. Otherwise the piglins are actually pretty useful in the bastion because they kill hoglins. That will change, however, when the piglin brutes are added to the game because the piglins will help the brutes attack you.
And brutes don't seem to be in game yet, are you playing in a snapshot?
Not quite playing, so much as keeping tabs on. I dislike the paucity of vanilla content, but I also don't really like the bleeding-edge mod versions either. I think Fabric mods are able to play in the snapshots, but because the mod authors are busy generating blue smoke out of their ears trying to update features and figuring out how to fix what Mojang (re)broke it's essentially vanilla that's "technically modded" but really isn't.
Yoinking bastion loot via safety hoppers was very much agreed to be an unfair/unintentional hack and Mojang did in fact change the mechanic so that piglin get angry when stuff leaves the chests in any way.

I didn't know that but it won't really be a big deal for me if the hopper trick stops working. It is so simple to just wall yourself in with the chest, open or break it, and wait in safety until the piglins calm down. So they might have to make it so that piglins stay hostile. Even then you can easily defeat them from inside the temporary shelter. Piglins aren't really a problem for me in Minecraft. It's the Piglin Brutes that will destroy me once they are in the game. :-)
Congratulations on the successful raid! However, their may be some loot you missed out on. Occasionally you will see this block, called chiseled polished blackstone.
Behind this block is a gold block, which the piglins will get mad if you break. You usually find these in the parts of the bastion that look like mines. Happy hunting!

I'm finding both polished blackstone and "hidden" gold blocks but not next to each other?
So I'm thinking that if you found a gold block behind polished blackstone it was probably just a coincidence.
The gold blocks I found were visible from the outside, high up, but to get at them I needed to break some blackstone and there was nothing on the inside that hinted that they were there.

Thanks for the tip, I hadn't considered that there might be more treasure besides the chests and pile of gold blocks in the treasure room.

I was checking random pages in the Wiki and it seems the brutes aren't here yet!
Unless you're running snapshots.
They're supposed to be added in 1.16.2
Just testing.
Fences are a better way to block off corridors instead of walls, as you can still see through fences.
Oh my gosh, thank you, I almost made a big mistake by putting off raiding the place. I better get over there right away!
True but in most cases you can see over the walls, unless you build them 2 high to protect from crossbow bolts.
And the Nether wood fences are fireproof and can be used even next to, or in, lava.
Just testing.
