I put up a neather portal and it spawned me in lava... I tore it down and built it 850 blocks away (maybe further)...and it still spawned me in the same location. How do I get it to not spawn me in lava when i go to the Neather? Any help is greatly appreciated.
I'd be helpful if you gave us your seed and tell us the coordinates of where you built your portal...because I've never seen this happen before.

I placed this in a castle I built on single players survival mode.
I went through the portal only to die in lava (three times)
I destroyed the portal I built at my castle and went to a log cabin I built near some sheep to farm wool.
I went through the portal at my log cabin location and it took me to the same place... (lava hell) but I managed to hop on a ledge and place blocks quickly enough to live
when i went back trough the portal it took me right out side my castle about 60 blocks away. That portal was never there to begin with so it's something weird for sure.
Here's the location of the mystery portal x:19608, y:66, z:-295.902
I dug in one direction from my mining shaft under my castle to these coords x:133.563, y:63, z:-1188.329. It popped my up in the middle of the ocean.....and by the way: this took me to the same spot as my castle and log cabin.... and when I stepped back through the portal it took me to the desert location outside my castle again.
How big is this world map exactly? cause it seems I can't get away from that 1028 block range.
What mc version are you playing? And on what system (xbox, ps, pc)? And nether portals can get really weird for some players. The best thing to try would be to go really far away, i'm saying to about 0x and 0z, and see if there is a flat piece of land there. Not underground, or in the sky. Just at sea level, or near it. If there isn't, find the nearest one, and build a portal there. That should at least get you into the nether safely.
The nether portal mechanics is complicated. What happens sometimes is that the game can't find a good place for portals to spawn, so it does it in very strange locations. You're most likely just having some bad luck here.

Since you said you managed to get out of the portal in the lava and survive, you'll want to build a new portal in a safe location and destroy the original portal (in the Nether, not Overworld; this means you'll have to bring a diamond pickaxe, flint and steel, and obsidian), then the game should take you to the one you built.
Or, you can build a shelter around the portal in the lava and make a bridge across to land (use cobblestone so Ghasts can't destroy it); note that it will always return you to the second portal in the Overworld since that is the closest suitable location. Otherwise, as mentioned by others, you have to be more than 1,024 (128 x 8) blocks away in the Overworld and 16 (128 / 8) blocks in the Nether (the range is always 128 blocks in the other dimension after converting) before the game stops finding the first portal (side note - you can use this to your advantage for a fast one-way trip between Overworld portals up to 1,436 blocks apart).
Also, the Wiki has a detailed explanation of the portal mechanics here.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
