Hello. I have recently set up a server for myself and my brother, and after working perfectly for over a week, we started to have server issues today. It is literally just the two of us playing, and both playing from the same router. The reason it is not just a LAN world, is that we often switch computers (a PC where it is hosted, and a laptop), and it messed up with inventories/levels - so I figured to just start a server for us two.
Anyway, today the connection on the laptop seemed very VERY slow and laggy, and it kept disconnecting. After trying for a few times, I saw that the message " *Can't keep up! Is the server overloaded*? " before it disconnected the player playing on the laptop, saying either "xxx Timed Out" or "handledisconnection() called twice". The most ticks behind was about 40-50. There were no issues with FPS or anything. Also, I ran a debug (whilst the laptop was online) for about five minutes to find that it ran at 20 ticks per second. Soon after the debug the player was disconnected.
I did a bit of research, and found out all sorts of info on Spigots, saving up on resources and dedicating more RAM, and referring in detail to this one: [https://www.reddit.com/r/admincraft/comments/87i0hi/keeping\_up\_with\_cant\_keep\_up\_an\_overloaded\_guide/](https://www.reddit.com/r/admincraft/comments/87i0hi/keeping_up_with_cant_keep_up_an_overloaded_guide/) . What I started with was pushing Xmx RAM to 1.5 gigs, but that literally did nothing. I'm not sure if it is worth playing with other more complicated things, really, because in the worst case we will just go back to the LAN. However, I am curious if it is an issue of memory? I have 8 gigs, and I would not be opposed to getting more for my computer, however I'm thinking if there is any point as I thought that would be perfectly fine to run a server just for two of us. Also, it is a vanilla world, no mods or custom texture packs, with just a few vanilla tweaks datapacks (afk display, anti enderman grief, armour statues, double shulker shells, more mob heads, multiplayer sleep, player head drops, silence mobs, track raw statistics, track statistics.)
So, my question is, if anyone has any idea what could cause those connections/server not managing to keep up? Is it not enough memory dedicated to the server? Is it something in game like entities causing great TPS lags (atm E is 8/85-91)? Is it internet connection?
Thanks in advance,
Just had a look - connection was dire. We were messing in just a creative world, just with the datapacks installed, but the person on the laptop kept being timed out (although the can't keep up message did not come up once).
