I have a bunch of mods that I've been playing on singleplayer Survival, but my wife has recently gotten a new comp, so we want to make a personal server so we can play them together. I've never really delved into modded multiplayer, and I'm a bit stuck at the moment in getting it set up.
I've been using the Twitch app to manage and play my modpack on single-player. I've been able to get as far as setting up an unmodded Forge server. I'm using Forge 10.13.4.1614 for MC 1.7.10, same as I've been using client-side for singleplayer. I was able to log into it and confirm it working.
Where I'm stuck is getting the mods working. I know you're basically supposed to have the same mods installed both server and client-side (right?). And any additional players also need the same MC/Forge/modpack.
How do I get my modpack correctly copied over to the Forge server? I do see the "mods" folder in the Forge Server folder, so I'd assume that I'd just drag the mod files into there. However, while my modpack's folder structure (as set up by the Twitch app) does contain its own "mods" folder, it also contains a whole bunch of other folders and files that I know are needed (that are not inside of the "mods" folder).
Also, as an aside, I know modded MC can be very RAM heavy. If I'm both running the modded server on my own comp and playing on that server, does that mean I'm essentially running the same set of mods twice, i.e. can I expect ~double the RAM usage? Or what kind of additional RAM usage should I expect from hosting the server?
You'll nee to download the minecraft server file and run it once. Then run the Forge Installer (exe or java) and then select Server. You may have to find the server file in the directory listing below. Afterwards, you should have mods folder. Essentially just copy the folder over from your client to the server (some mods to have two separate versions so be careful on that). Afterwards, you'll just have to copy the Mods folder from your client to your wife's computer and put it in the same spot after running the Forge installer. That's pretty much it. May need to do some portforwarding as well.
As for running the server on your computer as your client, it will consume twice as much RAM. However, it all depends on how many mods you have. It will also take more CPU usage as well.
Here is a quick tutorial on the whole process tho. https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Tutorials/Setting_up_a_Minecraft_Forge_server
