I have tried searching this forum but I am not having much luck finding a resolution. I am trying to set up a Minecraft server so my son and his friends can play. I am an IT guy, so I have access to a couple of different servers. I have an amazon t2.micro instance (1 core, 1gb ram) that I don't use much, so I was hoping to run Minecraft on it. I have found some older internet posts about running earlier versions of Minecraft on aws, but I am not having much luck. I have shut down apache and mysql on the aws instance, so there isn't much running. I run the jar file and it eventually logs "can't keep up" and then it appears to die. I have tried running it with up to 800mb for the java vm, and tried nicing it to have a higher priority. Regardless of what I try, it just seems to die.
I have been working with Java since the late 1990s (attended the first Java One conference, so I guess I'm old school), but I have no idea whether the resources available are sufficient to run Minecraft 1.14.
I am happy to try vm or gc parameters, but if that just isn't enough hardware, I can move it to something bigger. I think that there would never be more than 3 or 4 players - what is needed to run Minecraft on linux so that it is sufficently fast enough?
