I have created a server for me and my friends to play. No one but me can join me with my local IP address except me. I have tried to use external IPs but that doesn't work. Also I'm in a different situation as I can't port forward as I'm in a school-type situation. I don't want to play LAN as I want to keep it up so my friends can play and I'm pretty sure it won't work as I've tried that before. The weird thing is that a month ago it worked. I am doing the exact same thing as I have done before except for the fact that I got a new computer. Also I have a LInux computer hosting to mac and windows computers, might be the problem but as I've said before, the exact same thing has been done and it has worked.
What have you tried before? Port forwarding / external IP, or local IP? It is possible that your school could have blocked what you are trying to do since you were last able to do that. Try using a LAN world as a test, and if it doesn't work, then it is doubtful that anything else you try to set up your server won't work. LAN worlds in the PE edition don't work at my school.
Also, you may want to try setting the server IP in server.properties to your local IP. Also see if "localhost" will work. I don't know if someone else having a server hosted at your school is going to affect you, but typing "localhost" definitely is affected.
Sorry for the late reply, I was out of internet for a week. So I had moved to another internet in another place (not my school) so I hadn't time to try it out in the school. But I tried the new internet out and it still didn't work. I can't port forward this internet either. Both my server and LAN doesn't work. For the server, my friend's Minecraft just pings it and searches for a while then says it can't connect. If i change the IP address to something not the server, then my friend instantly says can't connect. This means they can see it, but not connect. Also I have kept track of my IP address which is dynamic. I have also tried setting the server IP to my local IP, but it doesn't work still. I (as the host) can connect with my IP address or localhost, but no one else can. It is also assured that no one is running Minecraft at this new internet.
P.S. This is PC edition.
P.P.S. All of the IP addresses are local, not external. I don't have port forwarding so that will not work and I don't need to go external.
@herb_ : Everyone who tries to connect is on my local Internet. We are all in the same house and the same router.
Some further testing has uncovered that it is most definitely my computer that is having issues. I have switched to Vanilla Minecraft for fears of that being the cause but it isn't. I have also done LAN both with forge and vanilla, neither worked. We recently had another computer added to our group so I tested LAN hosting on another computer. It turned out that the other computer could connect to the other computer on the system, but mine could not connect to either host.
Conclusion: My computer cannot connect with servers within my local Internet. It cannot play LAN, neither host nor other.
EDIT: I have just tried and successfully connected to an online server.
Yes, that is exactly what is happening. I am pretty sure I have already tried disabling firewall, but I will try again to be sure. Sorry for the late reply, I was busy at another place.
