Is your server inside your home network? If it is, you need to ssh to it's local IP from another device on the network, doesn't require port forwarding.
If it's outside your home network, yes, you'll need to port forward, and likely connect to <your-external-ip>:<SSH-port> (EG: 1.2.3.4:22) (You should also use a different port than 22, in this case)
Also, what version of Linux? (I'm assuming Ubuntu Server 16.04/17.04 here)
Have you set up SSH on the server? If not, you need to run:
At the bare minimum, anyway. More security options are available, but that will get you up and running. Then, SSH in and log in using your normal login credentials.
