So, as of late I started playing minecraft again. And I decided to make a mod pack along with a server for me and my friends to play on.
It was my first time making a server so I looked through so many tutorials.
Anyway, I have a minecraft vanilla server that I launch using techniclauncher and that i connect to using hamachi (or viseversa).
My only issue is, is that i didnt realize that i couldnt mod the server with the minecraft_server.jar, so i downloaded the bukkit.jar put in my plug in, ran the server, but it still says its a vanilla server( yellow V in the corner) even though some of the mods pop up(like the minimap mod) on start, any ideas?
Bukkit is for plugins. To install mods you need minecraft forge. You can go to http://files.minecraftforge.net/ and download an installer. In the installed you can click install server.
If you would like to have both plugins AND mods you can download Cauldron/Thermos/KCauldron/Sponge depending on what mods and what version you are using.
BTW I feel your pain of looking through sooo many tutorials. Let me know if you need more help.
Plugins are modifications on the server (similar to mods) that are only server side (only the server needs to have it)
So when on the vanilla MC you join a server and you got all those fancy commands like /home and you got factions, skywars, are all added by plugins. But plugins are different than mods because they are limited by what the can change on the server. (EX: They cant add new blocks only modify existing ones)
Anyways back to your server. So you titled the post
Help converting a vanilla server into a bukkit server with working mods
Bukkit you see doesn't support mods. It is a loader for plugins. So to run mods AND plugins together you need something like thermos. So one issue you said was related to the minimap mod. It is important for you to realize some parts are only server sided and some client sided. Minimaps are client sided so do not add minimaps to your minecraft server. One way to think about it is for example using a texture pack. What texture you use has nothing to do with the server.
So because you are having a lot of trouble with your server I decided to create you a 1.7.10 Thermos (got mods and plugins) server. I added some basic plugins to it, and you can look for some more plugins at https://dev.bukkit.org/bukkit-plugins/.
There are no mods, so you can add what ever mods you want into the mods folder. Don't forget to put into your hamachi ip into your server properties, and make sure you understand mods vs plugins.
I am not sure how much ram your computer has, but I have set the server to dedicate 1.5gigs of ram to the server.
PS if this helped don't forget to thank me <3 (this response took me an hour lol) and if you need more help add me on skype (pm me) and I can guide you. Also for future reference, most media fire files are safe because they have an inbuilt anti malware. But beware, most because no anti malware is perfect..

Here is a minecraftforum post on this: http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/minecraft-discussion/discussion/2575210-mods-vs-plugins-whats-the-difference
