My friend made a private server, just for me and him to play on. This server always worked, whether it be modded, or vanilla. By windows, I mean any Minecraft version on windows.
One day we went to go play it, and it just stopped working. I can see his server on the multiplayer menu, I can see my ping, the amount of players on, which players, the motd, etc. but when I go to join it stays on the "logging in" screen for a while then yields a "Disconnected" or "IOException: A connection was forcibly closed by the remote host" error.
He can connect to his server but I can't. Though, I can connect to every other server. I recently got a new PC, hoping that it might also be able to fix this issue but it didn't. Both he and I don't remember changing anything between the day it did work and the day it stopped working. I can connect to his server if we use hamachi, but that is really slow and messy.
Sorry about all of the writing, I just thought more information would be a lot better. Please help.
Edit: I've just attempted joining on a different connection and it worked perfectly fine.
I've just tried joining the server on a different connection, that isn't my home wifi. This worked perfectly fine and maintained a stable connection, so the issue is on my part. But, like I said, I can still connect to other servers.
We've tried restarting the router, we've even factory reset it to make sure nothing was changed, which didn't work either. I tried hosting the server to see if that would fix the problem, but it still persisted.
I can join when I host and he can't join when I host. Similarly, when he hosts he can join but I can't. It's on a fresh world so that's not a problem and it is also a fresh install of Minecraft
From what I've read, this does indeed look like a firewall issue. The easiest fix might be to get a vpn, but I don't think that will permanently solve your problem. Try disabling your firewall?
We've tried disabling all firewalls, (I might have to make sure he disabled all of his firewalls properly too) but that didn't fix the problem. Before seeing this, we did actually try using a VPN and it worked fine, the problem was that it was unplayably laggy, but nevertheless, I could still connect and join.

Check to see if his server has your ip listed as a banned ip.
I don't think this will work because he couldn't connect to my server when I hosted, and it was a fresh server so there're no banned IPs. I can't check right now, but I should be able to check in about 3-4 hours.

So even when you host it locally, you can't connect? Sounds like it might be something in your inventory or near the chunk you're in.

I've checked, nothing is blocked.

We have no banned IPs at all.
