So since minecraft 1.9 came out I decided "why not update my server ay?" so I got to the website and the only server file I can download is minecraft_server.jar and not minecraft_server.exe. Seeing this I looked for the reason why it wasn't there and found none. The next logical step was to download the .jar version of it. Tutorials told me that I had to open it using a .bat file with this in it (java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar minecraft_server.jar). I also tried changing minecraft_server.jar to minecraft_server.1.9 and that didn't work. And now I'm stuck with no where to go.
I need help with either making a server using the .jar version or by finding out where in the world minecraft_server.exe went, I mean why wouldn't it be there?
The .bat file is 100% correct so I'm not sure what else to say about why it doesn't work. I mean, it just crashes as soon as I it! I posted some pictures for you to see to show that this is the case. But a better question is. Why in the world is the .exe version not up on the minecraft.net website?
When you say it crashes, does it actually show the game loading or does it just throw an error before you see any game stuff? Either way, what does it say?
The command prompt from the .bat file comes up for less than half a second then disappears without opening anything up. Despite me putting in the right information for the .bat file. :/
Edit the batch file and at the end put pause on a new line. That will make it stay open until you press a key so you can see what error it is throwing.
your luck you have the .jar file, I just have a bunch of ".class" files for some reason. I'm updating from 1.8.7 server to 1.9, the 1.8.7 server is executable and before when I updated I just replaced the "minecraft_server_1.x.x" with a newer version. I've been doing this for the past 3 and a half years, don't know why they had to change it all lol

it was saving as a zipped folder instead of a .jar file, I think my problem is solved.

all help is appreciated
Your .bat file should use the file name "minecraft_server.1.9.jar", then the server should load. Also, you should put "nogui" at the end.
It should look like this: java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar minecraft_server.1.9.jar nogui
