I am preparing to host a private server that no more than 4 people are going to be playing on, however, I'm going to be hosting a modded server that will require some extra RAM and storage space than a typical server. The mods I have that will be most demanding on the server are Mo' Creatures, MystCraft, BuildCraft, and ChickenChunks. Any advice on the amount of RAM and storage space would be most optimal for these mods is appreciated!
For the last 3 years I have hosted small modded servers myself, and from my experience I think 2GB of RAM is a good place to start. You say these are the most RAM demanding mods you'll use, but it matters more the total count of mods. For example, 2GB will probably be fine for up to 40 mods with 4 players. Every 20 or so mods more after that you'll probably want to add an extra 512MB.
With regards to storage space, you'll need enough space to store all the mods plus however much space your world takes. I don't think I've ever had a world go above 100MB but it depends how far away from spawn you go (more chunks created = more space required).
