I'm needing some help regarding a private modded Forge server I'm trying to make. It's just for one friend and me, and we got a reasonable amount of mods. Both he and I tried hosting it, and we get the same problem. When just one of us is in, it works relatively well. Some lag, some hiccups, but playable. When both of us are in, it becomes pretty unplayable. Much more lag, for longer periods, it's a nightmare to even break any blocks.
We tried with a clean server, no mods, and it works like a dream. Practically no lag at all, fluid, no hiccups. I know it makes sense that mods would decrease performance, but I want to know just what do I need to do to make it work fine again. What exactly is it that mods are using up. When I host the server, I do it on a different computer which runs nothing but Minecraft. The memory usage always shows 85% free or so, so it clearly isn't a RAM issue. And even I get lag when we're both in it, even being on the same network as the host. I really don't have a clue just what the problem is.
We both have the latest Java installed, ports open, dunno what else is there to do to make it better.
Well, I have a different problem now, for no apparent reason, but might as well and try to give some information. I'm no expert on this specs things, but I'll write what I can find.
The computer I'm using for the server says this:
Model: HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC.
Processor: AMD A8-3500M APU with Radeon HD Graphics 1.50 GHz
RAM: 6.00 GB (5.48 usable)
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
The computer that I use to play is like this:
Model: HP Touchsmart 600-1240la
Processor: Intel Core i3 CPU M 350 @ 2.27GHz 2.27 GHz
RAM: 4.00 GB (3.87 usable)
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
And my friends computer:
Processor: AMD A6-3600 APU with Radeon HD Graphics 2.10 GHz
RAM: 4.00 GB (3.71 usable)
OS: Windows Home Premium 64-bit
All of them have both Java 8 Update 45 and Java 8 Update 45 (64-bit). And updating that actually helped with a lot of things, so at least I'm sure we're good on that regard.
I found some (not horribly outdated) Java arguments and it's been working really well for me, but now for no apparent reason my friend cannot connect at all. He gets that famous "connection refused no further information" thing.
Isn't 5GB a bit much considering the computer has 6 in total? Also, I actually had that PermSize thing before, but the console says it's ignoring it cause support was removed in 8.0 or something like that.
Well, I managed to get him to connect by disabling online mode, but that's really not ideal. Any idea as to why he might be getting that nondescript error when trying to join the server in online mode?
