I have been hosting a Yogscast Complete Pack server (with 3 players total) for a few weeks now. So far things are fine; however, it is on my main gaming rig, and is affecting my ability to play other games due to lag issues. I would like to host the server on a different PC, but I am having some issues.
I have access to two other computers which I can host the server on, but I have problems with both:
OldLaptop:5 years old, intel i3 processor(2.4ghz), integrated graphics, and 8gb of RAM, wiped clean of other programs, Windows 7
New Laptop: 3 years old, intel i7 processor (3.2ghz), 2gb dedicated graphics, and 12gb of RAM, wiped clean of other programs, Windows 8.1
Here is my issue:
Old Laptop will run the server, but its really not good enough. It has minor, but constant lag issues. At times, we can't fight monsters or break blocks for large amounts of time (10 minutes). This computer has hosted many other MC servers over the years, but none that were this heavily modded.
New Laptop is much better at running the server as far as allowing us to play for longer periods of time between lag spikes and server freeze-ups. However, when the server lags, it lags BAD. On this PC, it usually completely disconnects everyone then allows then to reconnect a few seconds later. I would say the lag is overall way worse on this computer.
So here is what I am confused about. I know my internet is not the problem (the server worked amazingly on my gaming desktop; all of the other computers use the same connection and are actually wired). I know the New Laptop is WAY better than the other one. It is much newer and has outstanding components (It can run skyrim on the highest video setting with no lag at all). That being said, there is definitely something causing it to run the server slower than the Old Laptop.
At this point in time, I really don't know what the problem could be with the new laptop. I really want to get the server off of my main gaming rig and onto the New Laptop. The other laptop is out of the question, but I just wanted to use it as a reference point in expressing that my newer, better laptop is REALLY BAD at hosting the server.
Could you please let me know if you have any idea what could be causing the problem? If you need any clarification or details, please let me know.
I really appreciate the time you have taken in reading my posts.
make sure you adjust the java args for the machine you are using this tends to be one of the main issues people have, also i would recommend dual booting your machine with linux which would free up a lot of your computers resources

Dual booting Works best if you have two hard drives on the same computer so Linux on one windows on the other, but yes it would free up resources.
Having said that, with the Specs the OP stated, the computer "Should" handle the server. However im concerned as it is only (probably) a dual core, heck even a single core processor. I think the computer may need more processing speed, or a more powerful Core. So what is most likely happening is that when the OP starts the server all is well until people start connecting and then starts getting the lag spikes and then server crashes due to the fact that the computer cannot handle that many connections at the one time, especially if they are coming from an outside source. Even on a LAN network, same issue with the connections. I mean there are other factors such as the router and the quality of the system, but I believe its the processor.
To the OP. I believe the problem is Processing speed, Intel core I7 is basically good for Browsing internet playing minecraft online etc. its not really for Hosting servers on (as stated, the processor cannot handle too many connections at any one time.) heck I7 isn't the best for any gaming. I would personally go for the I5 or I3 Processor, The I3 is the best for gaming machines in my opinion.
Hope I gave a detailed enough answer, and that it helps you out with your problem you are facing. If you need any more help Please message me via Private message.

Do you think I a virtual machine would work? I know that most of them "have" one core by default. But I don't really know how much of the parent machine's performance they can utilize.
