Ineed help with my 1.8.1 server. I can't get it to work! I have port forwarded 25565, but canyouseeme and yougetsignal say it's close! I think the port forwarding business is why I can connect to my server by typing inmy LAN IP, but everyone else, includin those in the same wifi can't! I do have a whitelist, but even with it off it doesn't work! Help!
Just spent hours setting one up for my daughter. Had to use the ip that my machine is, NOT the one people will use to connect in the server text file. The server .exe kept crashing on opening and the logs would say it couldn't find the port. Once I changed to my internal ip it worked like a charm and I could connect externally with the other ip. That make any sense?
I think so. Basically it worked after you put the internal ip in the server.properties file. Then everyone could connect. I'll try that. Thanks for the luck!
Yes but we had to use the external ip address that "whats my ip" shows for the actual connections to play. Just the internal ip in the file so the server could find the port.
I have no idea. I set up my port thru verizons site easily. Maybe call your internet company for a walkthru on your router to make sure it is set right and check your firewall to make sure its not blocked. Best bet is to rule out an error there first.
After I allowed Java thru the Windows firewall, it worked. That is, until earlier this evening when my friend who is NOT on the same wifi tried to join. Then it stopped working. yougetsignal had said the port is open, but now it says it's closed. My server is running while I testthe port isopen. HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!

Once you are there, there is big number on the top of the page. It will look something like 12.345.678.910 or ##.###.###.###
Then I want you to go into your server.properties file in your server. My guess is you left this as default based on what you said, (25565) and find the line that says "port: #####". Whatever 5 digit number it shows you, change it to 25565. Restart your server (Type "stop" into console, then click your start script in your server file)
Take the first number (the one from the link I gave you) and combine it with the second number (the port: #####, which you changed to 25565). You should have a number that looks like this: "##.###.###.###:25565". Again, with the "#"s being replaced by the numbers you got from whatsmyip, the link I gave you.
The number you have now is the number all externally connecting computers will need to use. You seem to know how to do it on your own wifi so, I'll leave you to that. However, in the "Server IP" box (in the join/new server screen) on all of your friend's (or whoever wants to join) computers who are not on your wifi, need to put in that number.
Should look like that for your friends. Again, with the "#"s being replaced by the numbers from the whatsmyip link.
If this doesn't work, please tell me exactly what the error message says, if it's your friend, have him tell you the error message. It's far easier to help you with the right information.
Ok, Interesting. I can still connect from a computer on the same wifi, although yougetsignal.com says port 25565 is closed. Yes that is what I do. The external-ip:port-25565(or-whatever-the-port-is.) I am waiting for my friend to reply and tell me what the error he got was.
ok then. My problem was that my external IP had changed and yougetsignal.com, which also gives me the ip, didn't realize the ip had changed until I reloaded the page. So problem now solved. Thanks everyone! My server now has lag, but I have created a new thread for that.
